Seems like there were a lot of Mac Pro purchases and returns. Doesn't bode well for the Mac Pro.

Nope - Most early refurbs like this are Loaners, Internal testing devices and Demo kit. They get stripped down and tested and put in new cases. Over the years Mac Pro's Appear early like this then disappear as they are sold and a few years down the line you may get some faulty returns that have been refurbed.

iPhones are faulty come with a new battery and shell and often a new screen.

Performance wise, out of the respective newly open Apple shipping box .. an 8 core Xeon 3223-series with 32GB RAM and a 580X is outperforming this new box? At what?

With the newer system you have at least 8 more CPU cores ( that are better). A better GPU . 32GB of more RAM , and 0.5TB of more storage space.

Can say it has more possible potential if spend even more money on additional parts for the MP 2019 entry model. Yes, you can by 2 generations older 32GB DIMMs , a PC market 5700 or marked down 6800 , and a 1TB drive for less than $1K. But the gap won't be $1K large anymore.

If Apple added an "More than Ultra" SoC option to the Mac Pro , that isn't going to lower the entry price point. ( e.g. a 3 die chioplet ).
It's not fair to compare a multiple-years-old config they chose not to update to the M2 and say "well the new version is more performant!" Especially since an updated Intel model would have things like more PCIe bandwidth and GPU support that would exceed the performance of this model.

While also acting as a nice little heater, let’s not forget that free extra.

The title "Apple Starts Selling Refurbished 2023 M2 Ultra Mac Pro at a Discount" bothers me...

It should be "Apple Starts Selling Refurbished 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra at a Discount"

I feel like Apple released this as a joke.
I think that in the end they were compelled to. If Apple hadn't have mentioned that the only machine to transition to Apple Silicon is the Mac Pro at the Studio keynote, they could have quietly killed it and concentrated on the Studio instead. A bit similar to the time of launching the XDR display, had they said it was £6,000 with the stand being a £1,000 delete option, rather than £5,000 with the stand costing an extra £1,000, there wouldn't have been the audible gasps. They tied themselves in knots unnecessarily.

There has to be a way to leverage "external" graphics cards to use as computing power. By external I mean a highspeed connector that the computer can use to leverage when it needs it. There's no way that you can simply plugin a graphics card into the motherboard like we used to do. There has to be a way.
Probably they just don’t want to.

Why? Maybe the initial plan was to produce something bigger than the ultra but that didn’t work out for whatever reason and it was too late in the game to add external gpu support.

It always amazes me how people find a way to drop the iPhone Mini into every single MacRumors article. Every...single...one. But hey, back on topic, saving 16% on the overpriced Mac Pro seems like a good start anyway!
Hey man, this time it wasn’t me!
“She caught me in the sofa,
Wasn’t me!” 🎼

Oooh no it doesn’t. I think lack of separating RAM was the kicker in its design and announcement.

With lack of sales and high returns does this mean Schiller’s courage statement and more significantly the 2013 Mac Peo announcement was a sign of things to come about a decade too soon!?

Look at the Studio, it’s the 2013 Mac Pro done right and more modern; soon to get TB5 (2yrs time Im betting). And with those speeds I’m thinking with a rack on the side Pro’s will finally accept 3 TB5 cables 5meters to the desk mounted ‘25 Mac Studio as a Pro machine. ??

We’re not going away quietly.
Nor easily! Jumped ship, came back soon upward yet still griping on X about it.
Challenge accepted!
Love it!

All in All Thai sort of feels like the mini launch. Not enough effort from Apple to really explain its reasoning for making the product regardless of what it’s entire features available in another product that the core purpose is in its size!

The correlation between lack of exuberance in the Pro’s sales vs iPhone mini’s are at the source Apple’s own fault.

That's a super fast appearance to the refurbished store. So basically everyone who bought one new returned it...

They must have bought one out of excitement, but then quickly realized that Apple giving us slots without GPU support is just rude.

Unlikely. Not the kind of product you buy before doing your research.

Still interesting it made the refurb so fast. Maybe performance is nothing to write home about?

I'm thinking within first two quarters of 2024, you ?
My the middle of 2024? I'd agree. Mostly speaking to the people who assumed we might get M3 notebooks this year.

I expect we won't see M3 Ultra Macs until later than that.
