"We believe the future is wireless" sigh.

Truly wireless or just proprietary wireless?

Well, they support the Qi wireless standard with their devices (I've got a Samsung charger at my desk), so I don't think you can give Apple to hard of a time on their wireless standards. Now whether you'll be able to charge anything with wireless (or at certain speeds) on an AirPower Pad is another question. However, Google has some proprietary features (just due to the way the Qi standard currently works) on their Pixel charging pad, so I wouldn't be surprised if Apple did too.

Do I need to remind everyone that there are still 3 weeks left in 2018? So, Apple technically hasn't failed to deliver on this yet, despite the FUD I see everywhere.

Yep, and after an unscheduled delay Amelia Earhart will be landing any time now...

Apple wireless, just like controlling your Apple music on your Apple speaker with your Apple watch

In this thread: Multiple people who don't realise how AirPower is different to what everyone else has and how much of a technical marvel it would be if they manage to complete it

This is a textbook example of "you technically could, but it doesnt mean you should" do something. All this has been is a waste of resources, damage to Apple's brand, and generally a marketing nightmare (Exhibit 1 - the existence of this thread). And the technical marvel that would come from it will have a very marginal advantage over a possible existing solution (stiching three pads together).

You know what, this reminds me of when the AirPods were announced. People were saying the same thing, a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. Expensive. Overly engineered. “Wired is fine”, “I don’t want another device to charge”. I still remember all the memes of how ridiculous they looked. I think its safe to say they didn’t damage Apples reputation.

I agree it was a mistake to announce it before it was ready, but I don't think it's a mistake for Apple to put research & development efforts into wireless charging.

People said the same thing about the iPod when it was announced.

All I want is 3 AirPower for Christmas! 1 for each major room in my apartment.

The only problem I have with this whole thing is that they announced it would be out this year. Just come out and say it has been delayed or something. I understand this will take time and require a lot of engineering to get right, but in the meantime a little transparency and communication would go a long way I think.

Still looking forward to it either way. Right now I have 3 separate chargers for my watch, phone, and AirPods. Looking forward to having all of that be charged by one single cable.

Bluetooth earbuds were alive and well back then. It was already consolidated technology.

AirPods did back then, and still do, sound like garbage for the price. But at least they were released roughly on time.

Bluetooth headphones/earbuds in general are still a hassle. Expensive to replace and another device to charge (in addition to my Watch, iPad, iPhone and Mac). Sometimes I'll be going out for a run, turn on my earbuds just to discover they're low on battery because I forgot to charge them, and that's a problem that did not exist.

I don't mind if this takes longer than expected but rather do it right the first time. Samsung pushed their devices out so quickly and they're still paying for those exploding batteries.

It's coming, it's mentioned everywhere from job openings to the iPhone XS/XR instruction card insert that no one reads.

Apple really is great at coming up with products we never thought we would need.

What’s that famous Ford quote... “If you asked the people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”
What if you want a faster horse for whatever reason? Henry Ford would be useless for you then right?

Astonishing how so many people would seem to rather have Apple release a product when it's clearly not ready.

Of course, there wouldn't be much to whine-n-moan about if the AirPower was ready and released.

Comparing the formerly most innovative company now with pre-1910 Ford Motor Corp. says enough - of the opposite you’d want.
Particularly as Henry Ford did launch the product (without wasting time on social issues, equality, human rights and ceremonials) and he didn’t disappoint either afaik.

Apple has explicitly stated they’re trying to get their tech rolled into the Qi standard. I think Google is on the same track too. It may take a while (standards bodies are slow) but it looks like everyone is onboard to improve the standard rather than keep new features proprietary.
