Yes and I 100% approve of tariffs to level the playing field

I'll put it simply. Tariffs do not work. They didn't work before, and they don't work know.

Global trade will route around the US like the internet routes around damage. Meanwhile, we will be paying more for everything, but especially things that can never, and will never be produced in the US. We don't have the climate for a lot of foodstuffs, we don't have the natural resources for many metals and minerals (as in they simply do not exist in usable quantities in the United States). Europe and other areas are already looking to completely cut out US-produced defense weapons and ammo, which is spooking the administration as we speak. Boeing needs all the help it can get, yet other countries will be looking to Airbus instead. Travel and tourism is already down in the US, and will go down further.

Tariffs are a simpletons fix. The senate voted yesterday (including some republicans) to block the president from blanket applying tariffs...but of course the house won't even vote on it, because they know it will pass if they do.

Edit: Additionally, "Made in USA" now equals "Avoid" outside the US.

Apparently the percentages they came up with is the trade deficits divided by the exports.

For example:

USA has a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Their exports to USA are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. Then he divided that number by 2 to be "kind".

It boggles the mind how this in any way would be a basis for tariffs.

But in either case, true - these tariffs are completely unrelated to any existing tariffs against USA.

This is not what Trump said, but that's the thing, he's doing something completely different now that he said he would do. I can only repeat once more - what he is doing now is not a response to any tariffs against USA.

Finally, the target countries do _not_ pay tariffs. The American people does when purchasing goods and services. So it's more like Trump taxing his population. Surprisingly many don't understand this part. He's penalizing _you_ for buying stuff from the outside world. This is what is supposed to be what is "making America great again". The American stock market futures do not seem to agree.
In order for people defending this nonsense to understand your well thought and well phrased argument, you should not give reasons, you should give slogans.

Some might see this as a buying opportunity. But, it may also take a long time to come to recover.
Which makes this an EXCEPTIONAL buying opportunity for (newer/younger) investors. The longer the market takes to rebound, the more "discounted" shares people are able to attain.

With that said, these tariffs are NUTS. And I really feel for those who are in or getting close to retirement...

Good. Maybe Apple can focus some energy on actually making quality, well anything at this point. Instead of purely focusing on stock prices.
The M4 MacBook Air is one of the greatest products (and values) they've ever made/released... Why are you on an Apple forum if you seemingly hate the company? Weird behavior.

People who are close to retirement, should have been taking their funds out of the market and into more stable investment vehicles like bonds.

Oh, so people won't be affected? Just reading the comments in this thread tells me that's not the case, and this is a vanishingly small sample size.
Depends on their situation , some might be a lot, some very little. Hence my comments on retiree diversification.

You know what HAS impacted everyone? Massive inflation for the last 3 years. Home prices up 30-80%, etc, etc , etc.

Welp everyone here is treating a 7 percent drop like a 70 percent drop 😂
I mean I get the angst of watching your money disappear, we all feel that way. The difference between the loony toons and normal people is we understand to just endure, not freak out and sell everything off, and wait it out. It always recovers. Always. And again, if SHTF, then it probably won’t matter anyway.

I wish other people would be smart to know that other countries have been tariffing us for a while now.
Whataboutism. Trump 1.0's round of tariffs caused quite a bit of havoc in the steel industry. Production went up, but the higher costs slowed down other industries that relied on the steel. Manufacturing was slowly on the rise, then the 2018 tariffs kicked in and not only stopped the growth, but also decreased it for one simple reason: higher input costs.

Now take that history lesson and apply it multiple folds. That's Trump 2.0. America y'all are going in for the short term gain, long term pain train ride. Wish you all luck, you're going to need it to survive the next four years.

Some items/industries can make sense, for example, Canada has a tariff on US dairy. Why? Because the US government heavily subsidizes the dairy industry, but Canada does not. Canadian farmers can't compete then the US government is putting its thumb on the scale. We (the US) are paying about half for dairy products that it actually costs to produce them.

Blanket tariffs, however, are never the correct response. There are no exceptions.

Oh yea, we're not putting tariffs on Canada because of the markets, but because they allow fentanyl access the borders. Or, at least that's what I've been told by the president himself.

51% of voters - of which the vast majority were purposefully mislead and manipulated by their "news sources"
Homer Simpson on an off day could manipulate 51% of the USA electorate. The Founding Fathers knew from the outset that they'd be dealing with a bunch of numpties in perpetuity hence the Electoral College.

Canada has a supply management system on dairy and poultry which is controversial.
Canadian consumers have long been subject to artificially expensive poultry and dairy products. This is largely due to price-and-supply controls on those products, known as “supply management.” This form of protectionism and price manipulation is enabled by federal and provincial legislation.

Hence why some tariffs make sense, for individual products with individual countries. Solar panels with China is another example. Blanket tariffs on entire countries, however, do not ever make sense.

...As for how much it cost to produce dairy in the US, I have family in the dairy business and know how much they get in direct subsidy checks from the USDA. I grew up on four-digit acre farms.

I'm all for this. America has been the world's biggest blackmailer for too long. This will help the world rely on it less and find alternatives. Not going to be a fun time, but I think it's a start to much needed change. Let them deal with their mess however they see fit and hopefully the world will stop relying on them.

So many people here think aid and low/zero tariffs were "generosity" and not simply a trade for influence and power.

"Vote with us this way...
Let me build a military base here...
Help this guy get elected...
Take a closer look at this company's bid..."

Reagan must be fuming in hell (pun intended).
