So how does this tariff pause help with bringing back manufacturing jobs to the US?

It's because actions can speak louder than words.

Shake the box.

The Tariffs were ON, and now they are on Pause. Time to think and negotiate, or just wait and be a smarty pants and get hit in 90 days if that is what it takes. These are choices that the typical politician (from any and every country) can think about. The old Reagan trade system might have ended.

Suddenly 75 countries are calling to negotiate on things they would have Poo-Poohed for months and years on previously. All that Poo-Poohing can be an annoying waste of time I guess. The clock is running on the USA to make their next Trillion dollar interest payment on $36 Trillion dollars of debt, and most people are oblivious to what that even means.

Instead of the EU claiming bullcrap reasons for why American cars do not qualify for "safety regulatory reasons" or "emissions reasons", and why our produce is not good because it has too much Monsanto chemicals in it, The EU can make some choices for proper and fair trading - taking into account the perspective of their USA trading partner.

I hate Trump for a lot of reasons. But I'm disappointed that he didn't stick with the punishing tarrifs. The current status quo where the richer get richer and the poorer get poorer is unsustainable. The tarrifs he imposed would have led us in the right direction.

Maybe he will put them back on tomorrow, or next week.... We'll see.

Here….
Either the story has changed, or you have misunderstood what was said. It announced that EU were increasing tariffs. They had proposed zero tariffs both way. Before all this started, there were similar levels of tariffs both way, in the 2 point something level.

The 20% originally set was based on the goods trade deficit (services somehow forgotten), with 25% for cars. Europeans are unlikely to buy American cars whatever happens in these deals as they are too big for the roads, and too inefficient. Another area mentioned is food, as EU law sets standards too high for much of what is manufactured in USA, and customers are unlikely to accept it in large numbers even if it was allowed, as they have got used to higher quality food.

M Tailor Green along with others in the gov just made millions in profit by selling their stock before the tariffs kicked in then taking millions in cash and buying into the big dip. Apple stock was involved

we got played by our own gov based on insider trading.

I have proof of this.

You can’t mention insider trading without mentioning the three magic words, NASTY NANCY PELOSI!

No, they would not.

The rich in America got very rich, long ago. The robber barons were very rich, John D. Rockefeller was amazingly rich. And yet the US had plenty of poor people simultaneously.

Tariffs were part of the reason for the Great Depression. Tariff-happy US created a lot of poor people.

This conflation between two issues is purposeful by the ideologues who are wish to exploit the grievances of the poor to empower wanna-be tyrants like Trump.

I think they were worried of a large bond selloff this morning (Wednesday), which would have fundamentally hurt our long term interests.

Yes, it would certainly hurt us in the long term if the dollar is abandoned as the world reserve currency. To put it very very mildly. And if this happens there will be one single person to blame.

That's why they call it a free market. Drop the barriers to actual free trade. Don't instill massive fines against companies like Apple or try to break up their ecosystem simply due to their success. Let the people choose.

No, you can keep your SUV kiddie killers or bleached up chicken. There are reasons the EU does not allow these. The rules are either health or safety reasons and are the same for all (EU) countries. Why exceptions for the US? Europeans do not buy US cars since they are simply too big: good luck navigating needlessly huge gasslurping monster SUV through italian villages or along the canals of Amsterdam. But it is not an anti-American sentiment (might have changed now though): the Ford focus and Fiesta that are adjusted to the European market/roads/gas prices or (until recently) Teslas are/were wildly popular.

Trump and co are literally engaging in market manipulation right now and this affects pretty much the entire world.

I hope this is not the end of affordable tech as we know it. You guys have gone crazy out there in America.

It is simple, if you want to sell at a market you follow their rules and regulations. Just make better cars that people want to buy, and produce foot that is healthy and doesn't generate generations of fat unhealthy people and the sales will follow. Bullying your way in, isn't going to work as the consumers still won't buy it.

Blatant corruption out in the open for everyone to see. Massive calls 10 minutes before he announced the delay. People should go to jail.
That and the constant blatant lies by him and those around him. Its like watching a terrible b movie. But sadly it is realy and some MAGA people are thinking this is the right thing to do. He's changed the legal system in such a way nobody will touch him. Turned America into worse than a third world dictatorship.

Sorry, no, factually incorrect. The EU offered zero for zero back in February. Trump didn't want to know.

The simple fact is that on April 2nd the US instigated tariffs on virtually every country in the world unilaterally. Before that there was nothing to negotiate, as there were no tariffs. Countries operated inside WTO rules. Trump with his obsession with tariffs decided to plough ahead with an economically nonsensical plan.

Yesterday the bond markets came close to the point of breakdown. The US Government was on the verge of not being able to borrow. Hence the sudden change of direction.

All of these points are incontrovertible and easily researched with a modicum of effort. You probably won't find them on Fox News or any other propaganda outlets for this mad regime.

Of course they'll spin this (lie, in plain English) as a great victory but the reality is the US just committed itself to a pointless act of economic self harm and stopped when the harm was about to become serious.

That said, the ridiculous tariffs on China are still in effect and likely to cause serious harm to one group - the US consumer.

Do you know the other way you can get countries to come to the negotiating table? Call up their trade negotiators and ask if they are free on Wednesday.

There was absolutely no need for these histrionics. Trade negotiation happens all the time.

This was just performative conflict made for TV. Like WWE, made for exactly the same audience, but having a really stupid, unnecessary financial impact on ordinary people.

Yes, it is a fairly old 13" Zenbook... maybe 8 years... blue with Core i7, SSD and touchscreen, instant on BIOS, etc. It is still working well, but I have had to replace the keyboard twice along the way and the battery once. It really works just as well as my MBA M2 for routine stuff. Battery life is only about 7 hours, however. I mostly keep it around to use OBD2 software for my vehicles.

Signature states we have a ZenBook, do you like the asus computer?
I loved my zenbook ponder blue asus notebook but sold that a mint or so ago.

For the benefit of the handful of MAGAs on here who are incapable of seeing through the lies.

This is from Sky News. Part of the News Corporation group - the same as Fox News but without the Orwellian agenda.

MAGA will just ignore it and say it is all part of the art of the deal.

The challenge is that there don't seem to be any adults left in the USA administration, they've all been ousted by a bunch of lying alternative reality yes people. It is the most extraordinary thing to witness, and dare I say more scary than what Russia is doing, as they know when they are lying? This lot hasn't got the comprehension.

American voters electing Trump to run the worlds largest economy is like parents of a 5 year old giving them the car keys to go out and shop for gourmet meal ingredients and actually expecting to have a good dinner later... or even expecting the 5 year old to make it home at all.
