My concern is, and it will be apples
Problem to deal with, is many usb-c cables and accessories are shady with power specs and could fry your board

It’s not like usb-a where you
Don’t have to think twice about how cheap or shady of an accessory/cable you’re hooking up. It just works.

With usb-c it works or it doesn’t or it does somewhat. And then its impact on the machine if lower quality will not necessarily be immediately known. It’s a great port but finnicky in its requirements
Nice FUD. I have no idea what you're talking about. Haven't had any problems like that and have had my machine for 18 months.

Except that this model only had integrated graphics. If it had ThunderBolt 3, instead of TB2, it would have been perfect to use with an eGPU.

Yeah it is a shame they discontinued the discrete graphics options in 2016 :/

I think this would have been a great machine if they had replaced the two thunderbolt 2 ports with USBC/Thunderbolt 3, upgraded the graphics and processor to the current gen and integrated a Touch ID sensor.

Alongside the release of 2018 MacBook Pro models today, Apple has stopped selling the sole 2015 MacBook Pro that remained available for purchase on its online store, marking the end of an era for the notebook.

Until now, Apple continued to sell one 15-inch configuration of the 2015 MacBook Pro for customers who preferred the notebook's wide range of connectivity options, including a pair of Thunderbolt 2 and USB-A ports, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and Apple's break-away MagSafe power connector.

Apple no longer sells a MacBook Pro like this

By comparison, the 2016 and later MacBook Pro is equipped solely with two or four Thunderbolt 3 ports, depending on the model, that can deliver power, USB, DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA over a single connection. All of Apple's notebooks continue to have 3.5mm headphone jacks as well.

The overall design of the 2015 MacBook Pro was first introduced in 2012, when Apple released its first MacBook Pro models with Retina displays. The notebook had a much slimmer design compared to pre-2012 models, after Apple removed the built-in Ethernet port and CD/DVD optical drive.

With the removal of the 2015 model, the new MacBook Pro lineup is now exclusively Thunderbolt 3 models. Those looking for expanded connectivity without adapters are now limited to the outdated MacBook Air, equipped with Thunderbolt 2, two USB-A ports, an SD card reader, and MagSafe 2.

The 2015 model was also the last MacBook Pro to feature a scissor mechanism keyboard. The lower-profile butterfly mechanism keyboard introduced on the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro has proven problematic for some customers, resulting in Apple launching a service program offering free repairs.

Updated: While supplies last, Apple is still selling the 2015 MacBook Pro on clearance. These remain brand new, unopened models -- not refurbished. Thanks to eagled-eyed MacRumors reader Christopher.

No serious corp is buying a laptop released in 2015.

Nice (dramatic) Try.
Actually a lot of them of them are, the new laptops are a support nightmare for large organizations in all respects. It's way more expensive to guarantee standard functionality for your users with the new machines.

Crazy, I remember in the launch day in 2012 people commenting on how the Retina MBP's were a downgrade from the non retina models, on how Apple lost it's "essence" for removing the CD/DVD Drive, USB ports, making it thinner, non modular, impossible to replace the internals, weak, horrible fan design for heat management... and now it's considered the best? When Apple releases another redesign in a few years, the 2018 MBP will suddently become the best Macbook Pro Apple has ever made too?

Because the new butterfly mechanism keyboards suck compared to the older scissor mechanism ones. Given that the keyboard is a laptop's primary input device, I'd say that's pretty big.

I like the idea of integrated TouchId, but I'm ambivalent about the Touch Bar. I mean, a computer keyboard without a real Escape key? The designers have obviously never used the vi editor!

Form should follow function, not vice-versa. A mantra that Apple seems to have forgotten in their relentless pursuit of thinner over all other considerations. :-(

Glad I Got My Mid 2015 Dongle-Free MacBook Before The Furtherance Of Their “Less For More” Policy Was Made Product Wide.

Worse keyboard/less ports/no iconic lit Apple logo for MORE cash?

Would you mind if I opted out. Forever? Well. At least until the life of this one? Thanks!

They affect a small, messy percentage (Stop eating two inches from your MacBook People).

I work for a major university, and only a small amount of our new MacBooks have seen issues. Most people love the Touch Bar too. Macrumors' audience is resistant to change, and not representative of the general Mac population.

This affects people that actually use their computers on the field, film professionals, musicians, photographers and salespeople, we don't use our computers on a desk. This new computers are a liability for our businesses because they are simply not reliable in an active work environment.

Don’t like it, don’t like the price, don’t buy it. If enough people do that maybe Apple gets the message. But that doesn’t seem to be the case does it. For all the complaining by the self-described technorati about ports, CPUs, GPUs, scissor keyboards and the like the Mac seems to be holding its own.

I think this will depend on the peripherals. When they removed the CD/DVD drive, it was at the cusp of moving software installs to using thumb drives or online.

With USB-C though, I can't help but feel they missed the mark on this. What is annoying about this is you will either have to replicate your cables or carry USB-A to USB-C converters. Peripherals haven't really fully embraced USB-C for the most part. The companies making the biggest gain are those that provide a USB-C dock that provides USB-A ports. It's kind of funny.

Lastly, the iPhone cannot be connected to a 2016+ MBP out of the box without a dongle... the synergy here is fantastic.

I sold my 15" 2015 with the dedicated graphics and 500GB SSD/16GB RAM for about $900 in February. It had some minor damage on it from slipping off my bed onto the floor 3-4 times. The lid didn't close all the way and the cord had a split in it at the point where it connects to the plug that plugs into the computer to charge. I sometimes wish I still had it though but now I'm finally using my 2012 13" non retina MBP that I also bought new in 2015.

How so? The ports? You gotta let go of the past sometimes man... USB, HDMI, etc.... all in the past.

In corporate America, HDMI is a thing of the present. Going in to a presentation without my MacBook Pro DONGLE is embarrassing. Then, when I do whip out my white HDMI to USB3 dongle to plug in and present is just about as embarrassing.

Apple should've kept HDMI another year or two: USB3 is the future, but TVs and current A/V systems have yet to catch up. And it's a pain.

Mag-Safe - no substitute! HDMI, I can't see TVs with TB or USB-C in any future, the current USB ports are barely functional in most sets.

Growth into USB-C is much slower than ALL computer designers anticipated!

I encounter HDMI, USB A, and SD cards every day in the REAL WORLD. It would seem they are a reality of the present and NOT the past. I do look forward to a future with only 1 port but it’s delusional to keep thinking we’re there now. 4 years into USB-C and the industry has barely moved. This is nothing like ditching the floppy drive in 1998

You think they did this so they could make money on dongles? Really? You know Apple made over $50B in after tax profit right? I bet all the dongle profit combined is something like 0.01% of that.
It is still more money, it doesn't matter how much, it is simply more money than they use to make. There is a huge profit margin on dongles, great ROI.

There are limits to greed? Not that I've seen, Apple, Comcast, AT&T, military contractors, used car sellers, etc., all show this penchant at the expense of customer experience.

  • lack of ports that definitely are not yet in the past
  • crappy keyboard for typing longer than a short email (e.g. programming)
  • lack of tacticle fn keys and especially 'esc' key (again major deal breaker for programmers)
My mid 2014 retina 15 inch pro is still ticking just fine and shows no sign of slowing down

I don't know... my 2014 maxed out 15" MBP has being very unreliable and buggy as of late but I assume it's just how macOS is currently.

They're only "in the past" for Apple laptops. My desire to purchase a new Apple MBP is also "all in the past", as I need the ports and a reliable keyboard. By going minimalist for what used to be a professional workhorse of a laptop, Apple has forced the issue with laptop choices. It's a shame, as I miss the Apple OS, but Linux on a nice PC isn't so bad.
