Apple has moved to adding the Globe icon to their keyboards and it is becoming the fourth modifier key for their OSes. In iPadOS 15 the globe key is used for multitasking shortcuts. As macOS and Apple’s mobile OSes continue to move towards each other, they probably want complete continuity to how their hardware is laid out.

They’ve already introduced the Globe key on the bottom row for all Apple Silicon hardware. I suspect that’s why the Space Gray keyboard was phased out. Hopefully as @macsplusmacs said, a new generation will be introduced soon.

But maybe it will be a different color that we all come to love? Imagine if they new Pro Hardware is in Pacific Blue or Graphite?

You proved my point. It’s all about the value of the company. When Steve was in charge people talked a lot more about the details of products and a lot less about the stock price.
I proved no point of yours. Tim Cook put out some amazing new products and he did what a good CEO is supposed to do is to bring the company into profitability. And let the Steve crap go. He’s dead. He’s been dead for many years. If Tim Cook wasn’t doing the right thing the company would’ve faltered. Stop bringing up the dead. 🙄

It's just the function key. I don't get it.

Guess I'm trading in my iMac Pro then.

That's if Apple release something as powerful in M1/2, but not as childish looking as the current new iMac.
I'm not sure why anyone thinks Apple will make a pro grade iMac in bright yellow or whatever.

You'll get your Darth Vader colors.

Sadly they sacrificed professional level and professional design of iMacs and opted for casual style that might appeal to mainstream casual users only.

Keyboard/mouse/trackpad/iMac colors drive "professional" categorization and usage?

I signed up to the forums just to reply to this article. 1) The Apple Space Gray were a bit too expensive, 2) I can't imagine why they would discontinue them, as other people posted, as they still sell SG laptops/iPads, and some of us that care about what our gear looks like will buy at the Apple premium price, and 3) Satechi makes some pretty nice kit. I have no affiliation with them, but if their keyboard is half as nice and well-engineered as their current aluminum SG iPad stand, I'm in. The stand is solid, and because I'm a graphic designer, I appreciate the fact they took time to make their packaging look smart as well. Cheers.

Satechi’s keyboard is nice. Its well made and the key presses and lighting make it enjoyable to type on. The only thing I don’t like about it is that its not Apple’s Space gray color. Its lighter than the color apple uses and next to the Apple Trackpad or iMac and MacBook Pro it doesn’t quite match in space gray color.

Lol there sure are a lot of people convinced that Apple is releasing another iMac this year. Do we have any information at all that says they are doing this?

I really, really hope they are, but its also completely possible that there won’t be another iMac released this year. I’d say that’s more likely than some other one being released at this point.

I have a Space Gray Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2. Love them both.

I wish I would have bought the Space Gray Magic Keyboard With Numeric Keypad before they sold out but I didn't think they'd sell out as fast. And now if I order one it certainly won't match. I do wish they had offered it without the keypad.

It looks like a refresh is imminent because…

1) That stupid Magic Mouse charging connection on the bottom, meaning it can’t be used while charging, is low-hanging fruit that I suspect came from Ive.
This is such a ridiculous complaint. Either charge it once a month while you sleep, or if you can't remember that simple task, just plug it in for two minutes while you get a cup of coffee, and by the time you get back it has enough charge for the day. I suspect Apple will release a Mag-Safe Magic Mouse.

Of course I'm using a $20 Logitech BT mouse which is excellent and has given me over a year of battery life from 1 AA battery.

2) New color options to match the new Mac and iPad colors.

3) The potential to add Touch ID-via-external-keyboard to more models.

If the ‘standard’ iPhone and iPad have multiple colors while the Pros are more understated, it stands to reason that the similar Mac levels will get the same, thus accessories could be offered to match.

If it was low hanging fruit then why didn’t Apple change it with the newest M1 iMacs?

There isn’t any evidence that there is going to be an iMac Pro. It obviously didn’t sell very well for Apple as it never released a major update after its 2017 launch.

ya, who who want a magic mouse in Gold... The colors matching would be all off. *thinks*

For sure, I have the space-grey trackpad, but at the moment it's mismatched with the white/silver compact keyboard. I've had this setup for years, "knowing" that the compact space-grey keyboard would get released "any day now". I hate the silver/white color, because I have my setup largely for my work, which is somewhat hands-on and hence the keyboard quickly shows marks. I also just can't stand how much it announces itself, a dark setup just melts away inconspicuously into the desk better.

The keyboard with the numeric keypad is a complete deal-breaker for me, it just sets the trackpad too far away. Fair enough for accountants and post-production pros who perhaps use the numeric keypad for shortcuts and editing operations, but for most users I think that the compact is way more suitable.

I'm curious about the rationale behind this decision. Apple accessories in space grey are very popular in the secondary market and it would be fair to assume that the same happens in the primary market.

It's a message that the iMac Pro was a failure, and they want to make that perfectly clear. Or they are just getting ready to introduce the new iMac colors coming to market in all the colors. (I'd buy a red keyboard and mouse)

I think Space Gray hides the dirt and grime better...

The iMac-Pro should be higher performance than the regular iMac so how is Apple going to release a new iMac-Pro when the M chips have a single performance level. Can you imagine the bitching Apple would get if the only thing the iMac-Pro offered was a larger screen.

Apple will release an iMacPro once there is an M2.

I’m thinking that it may be a cost cutting exercise. Is it possible that the metal finishes (space gray, gold etc) are more expensive and/or difficult to produce than the coloured ones? Don’t know the answer, but clearly now Apple running the risk to stock vast numbers of iMacs with “unpopular” colours.

See, you got me there. Turns out the IMP WASN'T faster than an iMac. Oops... Wish I would have known that before I bought one, but I really do like it a lot. I just overpaid for the performance under an iMac...

I would think they are all anodized. The color is just what color stuff you dump in the tank that day. *shrug*
