This is good news. iOS 11 is the best and more secure version ever released, and nobody should think of going back. Disabiling the ability for downgrades is a smart move by Apple, as it will protect users from the many vulnerabilities in older versions of iOS.

Obviously that's cutting the corners a bit. Apple could easily release firmware updates to bugs that could be potentially exploited. Let me phrase it like this.. nobody needs a new unlocking animation to be able to be protected against a wifi exploit In the broadcom wifi chip firmware. Nor does anyone need a new control center for added iOS security. Apple just decided to bake everything together and then push that out to all devices. This way they do accomplish security updates together with an iOS UI overhaul, they also accomplish subpar user experience in older devices incapable of rendering 'fancy' animations. So it's rather customer unfriendly to do it combined like apple does. It is however quite business friendly since it pushes people to get new iPhones because thats the only way to get good user experience again. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out and it explains rather well why apple stops signing their own released firmware. It also explains why people get miserable after updating their device to the latest firmware and magically keep running back to the Apple Store..

Is it just me, or has Apple been narrowing the cut-off time frame?
They have.. due to poor adoption rate of iOS 11. They don't want te become a laughing stock... which they just became.

At least no one will complain about iOS 11 being inferior to iOS 10 in this thread.
iOS 11 is incomparable to iOS 10. Light years apart in a different universe making a different ding. It's almost comedy.

As a Software Engineer I'm very glad it isn't possible for people to downgrade to older iOS versions. Nothing is more annoying to take older iOS versions into account when developing apps. It breaks innovation and costs a lot more time.
People also seem to forget that staying on older iOS versions is a big security risk, which shouldn't be underestimated. Nothing is more important than upgrading to the newest software version since a lot of exploits and security issues are fixed. I cannot stress this enough...
In my opinion iOS 11 runs perfectly fine on older devices like the iPhone 5s and 6.
Sounds to me like you are a performance change denier. Again, nobody needs a new control center to have a Broadcom wifi chip firmware exploit fixed. Nor does anyone need new animations. Apple is clearly aggressively pushing their inferior user experience onto users with hardware of age greater than 1 year. Apple isn't persuading users with fancy new options in their latest iOS/iPhone to upgrade.. no it's deliberately pushing users to upgrade by forcing detrimental user experiences upon them. Let's not deny this people. Apple is actively making sure your older devices runs less great than it did previously under the flag of "security"(?), which is obviously nonsense. This detrimental UI experience already happens after one year of using an iPhone. Which is insane.

What iPhone do you have?

and I was wondering if I could still down grade if I didn't like iOS 11...well that affirms that.. no not ready to upgrade yet Apple.. will wait for a few more updates.

Prices for used iPhones with 10.3.3 will double now. Last known iOS Version without battery drain and without fake wifi/Bluetooth buttons.
Ha! That's a great idea actually! Downgraded yesterday on my soon to be sold iPhone 6s. *iOS 10.3.3* will be prominently displayed in the ebay auction title. :D

So you consider commercials and their products not a choice too huh. Daily bombardment.
That comparison is not correct, not even remotely. I can DECIDE not to expose myself to commercials and ads. I have taken action to avoid being exposed to unwanted ads.

The iOS update nag is an intrusion that it is happening on a device that I paid for, and forced to have to respond to the pop-up dialog before I can continue working with the device that I paid for. I can't block it. (No, the tvOS beta workaround is NOT the solution) I can't avoid it.

There is no good reason for Apple to continuously display that pop-up without giving the user an option of "don't notify me again for this update version".

There is a problem this time that may be affecting thousands of users around the world: iOS11 is so far not compatible with third party touchscreens on iPhone 6S. If your screen has been replaced with a non-Apple screen, the update will cause the screen to be non-responsive to touch and therefore will render your phone unusable. Going back to iOS10 works fine, but now that option is gone. Anyone not aware of this issue, will have to pay again for an original replacement screen at Apple if they want to use their iPhone 6S.

Sucks to be you, iOS users. :p

But seriously, this is the single greatest reason I'll NEVER come back to iOS (iPhones), and hesitate to buy ANY iOS device.

EVER.

The iPad is still the best art device (my daughter swears by it and the Pencil...we tried everything else).

But aside from that, we ain't updating the OS. It'll stay on 10.3.3 until I hear that 11 is better for this year's iPad Pro from everyone (not just the cheerleaders here).

False.

Settings - storage - iOS update - delete.

Will stop the pestering update notifications....

It doesn't actually. iOS will silently download the update again in the next week, when you are on wifi, and ask you to install it.

The way to block it is to either keep wifi turned off, or block access to their IPSW firmware server address. The latter is possible in some routers with firewall settings, otherwise you can use opendns - setup a free account, block the address, and make all your iOS devices (that you want to stop getting iOS 11) use opendns servers. If you are on a dynamic IP address, you'll need a computer and the opendns updater software to keep your filtering active automatically.

You shouldn't do this though. It is not safe to stay on iOS 10. You'll get hacked and your bank accounts will potentially be emptied.

Don’t upgrade. IOS11 is terrible. Tried downgrading the other day and it didn’t work. So I’m stuck with it. Damn shame.

Haven't had significant issues with iOS 11 on any of the 3 devices I've tried it on (6S, SE, 7). But I am disappointed they still haven't brought 3D Touch app switching back to iOS 11 (not even in the betas AFAIK) and now the only way to get it back has closed. I'm currently glad I upgraded to iOS 11 (otherwise I would've downgraded), but if we don't see 3D Touch app switching come back before the end of the month, I'll feel like I made a mistake not staying on 10.3.3.

I did manage to downgrade my 6S to 10.3.3 before giving it to my wife, so I'm glad I managed to establish a stable transition for her (she's upgrading from a 6 on 10.3.3).

I'm not doubting you, but can you offer specifics on what vulnerabilities were fixed in iOS 11 that are likely to be exploited in 10.3.3 that would give attackers access to bank info?

Sure... until it redownloads the 2.47gb update and starts bugging you again ;)

Not to mention the annoying red badge on the settings app that you can't get rid of natively (outside of updating).

Here you go, straight from Apple themselves on the security content of iOS 11: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208112

“Downgrading No Longer Possible”

Wrong. For the last few years every iOS version has felt like a downgrade. Then we have point updates until it is ‘perfected’ and then weeks later the latest iOS version is released and the whole process starts all over again.
I don’t like to feed into negativity but damn, if you aren’t right. I’m doing okay now on 11.0.2 so far on my iPhone 7 Plus. On my Mini 4 I’m having a bit of a learning curve. But so far, so good, for the tasks I need to do. Previous versions wrecked my battery life so hard. I’m hoping they don’t break that again with the next update. That happened to me on some versions of iOS 10, too. It’s painful.

Actually thinking about it more and more lately.
Out of the frying pan...into the fire. The problem with Android life is depending on what device manufacturer and carrier you choose, you often can’t get updates when you want and need them. That includes security updates! Samsung has vastly improved in this regard but they still need to work with the carriers and some carriers are slow.

So be careful and do your research before you make the leap, if you decide to. On Pixel phones you’ll get updates of course. But I’ve read their forums and full OS updates break their phones in big ugly ways sometimes.

Nothing is perfect. They all have issues.

My iPhone 7 seems fine, my watch is fine.. but the iPhone 6's battery life took a nosedive.
I see I'm not the only one.. thought it may be my phone.
I can only assume/hope that this will be fixed in future updates.
I trust that they will get it right.
ugh...
