I really wanted to like the new Air. In fact, I still do - I can overlook the single external screen limitation, and given that the M2 is likely to go into an iPad Pro, the lack of a fan has most likely been accounted for properly (and silence is nice). With a dedicated charging port, I can even overlook the fact that it only has two TB ports.

But 8GB of RAM. And $200 to get an additional 8GB of RAM. With the 10 core GPU, 512GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM, it's $1,699 - which is only $50 less than the best 14" MBP price I've seen - and the only thing you're giving up there is 0.8 lbs, a bit of sleekness, and Midnight blue.

My 2015 13" rMBP already has 16GB of RAM, and when I have dozens of tabs open, it definitely helps. I would've hoped that seven years on, we'd have moved on from 8GB base RAM and that we'd have 16GB/32GB as our starting points.

Ah well. the rMBP is still satisfactory for now, so I guess we'll see what next year brings.
you're definitely gonna need 16gb or more if you already on 16gb, moneterey has been hell with its memory leak for me.

How does everyone feel about it being fanless?

My old MacBook 12 is fanless and it drove me crazy for years because it would get scorching hot (yes, scorching hot; to a point where it would burn my hand if I touched it underneath).

I wonder if the newer chipset and components solve any of this.
I do regular editing of 4k video and RAW photos in PS on my 16GB/1TB M1 MBA and can report it at most feels warm on the underside during peak number crunching. Fanless hasn't been an issue for me, but YMMV.

Think it might be due to apple not wanting to cannibalize M1 pros

HAHA that's true also with the multiple colours there will be more open box returns due to people preferring a different colour model.. but its a shame that the 'refurb' price will be what the new price should be anyway!

wtf I just noticed that, It makes the air look even worse. Also there will be a big performance hit due to it being fanless and thin chassis, so not only is the 10gpu m2 air the same price as the pro it will be slower and have less features?(no touch bar, smaller battery, inferior screen) ?

why is apple deliberately nerfing the air like this?

The fan makes a difference only with extremely heavy usage. Apple has moved on from the Touch Bar (I guess they really did not want to invest another cent on the 13” Pro chassis). The screen on the MacBook Air is now 500 nits, so much closer to the 13“ Pro, plus it has the “extra” space around the notch. It’s also 10% lighter.

After owning the base model M1 MacBook Air, I realized 256GB for storage and 8GB of RAM is not enough at all.

I can’t wait to rectify my decisions.

I agree. The 8GB of RAM was managable, but 256GB storage just didn't cut it. By the way, Decluttr seems to have decent trade in values. They are offering me $665 for a base spec MBA.

Nice redesign with some good practical upgrades but unfortunately the pricing has killed it for me.

M1 air in 2020 was undoubtedly the best choice for a quality everyday laptop around 1000$.

M2 air in 2022, with that 200$ bump, same ram/ssd base specs(even tougher pill to swallow in 2022) and with latest intel laptops starting to catch up isn't that easy to recommend anymore...

Even worse, here in Europe starting at around 1500€(!). If l'm going to have to overpay for an Apple product l'd rather splash another 500€ and get the 14inch pro which is truly a machine on a whole other level. Or just get a discounted/used m1 air and save myself 600/700€.

Apple trying to cover price brackets made the new air get dunked on from both above and below.

SO GLAD they opted for black keys and bezel. Looks WAY better than the mockups.
Predicting the Midnight option will be first to sell out. Not just because it's what I'll be ordering but because it looks gorgeous. ❤️ this redesign.
Me too. I'm extremely tempted.

If I had one minor gripe it would have been better if there was one thunderbolt port on either side of the chassis.

The UK is one of Apple's largest markets outside the US and yet they want £1650 for 16/512 on this M2 MBA. Lol no.
Have they realised they're charging too much for the M1 14" MBP and are pricing accordingly to upsell you into the next model?
I just can't imagine they're actually selling all that many of these over here, unless to business customers.

No bigger screen. The same 8GB/256GB with $400 extra just to get a usable amount of RAM/SSD. M2 being on the same TSMC N5 for the third year. No thanks. I will stick with my 2018 Intel Skylake rebrand quad core PC. At least it has a 15' screen and 16GB of RAM.

Yes yes I know M1 is already fast and M2's CPU performance being 15% faster makes it really fast. But Usually Apple stays on the same node for 2 years. TSMC delayed its N3 and now I am not gonna get onboard with the tail end of N5. I will never render a video in my life and I am not paying $2500 for a 16' MacBook Pro just to get the bigger screen.

And for crying out loud, make 8GB RAM on laptops illegal.

I was really excited watching the keynote live but now I am pretty bummed by the price for the specs. I think this might be a good time to get a MBP with an M1 pro. I see people saying that they would rather wait for the M2 MBPs but those will most likely have a price increase also. A 20% price increase similar to what the MBA got would mean $2400 for the base MBP with the M2 pro. Apple being Apple will probably price the M2 MBP in a way that will make the M2 MBA look like a sweet deal.

Me too. I'm extremely tempted.

If I had one minor gripe it would have been better if there was one thunderbolt port on either side of the chassis.
Agree. Minor, but I too would prefer the option of connecting USB devices on either side vs. just one side. Somehow, I think I'll manage. ;)

Preorder date can not get here soon enough. I'm pretty sure the original plan was "and these new MacBook Airs are available starting today," but processor delays said otherwise. Had those been available today, it would have been interesting to see how quickly delivery dates would have slipped until next month. Within an hour?

8GB starting with a $200 8GB bump is insulting.
Very insulting indeed.

“Have you ever?!”
“Never!” weird science

there's not a white notch but the 8GB and price jump is rude
Didn’t believe the white noch would happen that would just be dumb but gigabytes RAM starting God why why.

for the love of god just call it a MacBook and kill the air name for good🙄🙄
Maybe because it’s not a MacBook and because it starts too expensive no it’s not a MacBook however 13 inch MacBook Pro should be the new MacBook it shouldn’t have a fan it should be a hell of a cheaper and get rid of that Touch Bar.
Not supporting dual displays on the new MBA is really a miss IMO.
A huge miss to should be like default across all Max it’s mine bugging a dumbness is that an M2 new class processor can do pro editing but cannot support what not even 1280 P on two external displays with the internal running like come on Apple this is showing the world at all the boasting of the M class processor is still crippled like this is terrible terrible!

Did I see that they went back to Magsafe? WTF?!
Because of the new mag safe is the standard and it keeps your two thunderbolt connections open nobody but you and maybe one of the person in the live presentation chat was complaining about mag safe.

I was considering getting one, but the price increase may have killed the deal for me. I need 16GB and 512GB storage, That upgrade puts me in 14 inch Pro territory. Perhaps an M1 MBA is still a better deal for me.
Indeed at this price getting a 16 GB and a 512 GB storage for a MacBook Air really is insulting sounds like a paying for the colour and the brand-name call getting a MacBook Air in the first nice sharpish edge wedge shaped occurred and that was like supreme value 1700 Canadian walking out the door with a top in spec 13 inch.

24 GB is plenty. By the time you really need more you'll easily want to upgrade to an M4 or M5
What!!?
No it’s not plenty the less room you have the more storage swap occurs in the storage of your SST drops not a good idea 24 GB for a max is not good 32 would’ve been nice.

Still only Thunderbolt 3, and only 1 external display supported.
Are you serious is this really thunderbolt 3 only?!!

Ugh I waited for the M2 only for this reason.
Having two screens really bothers me know I’m not even sure how good this MacBook Air will look on a 34 inch screen now unit 60 Hz I worry.
I was going to buy an Air day one. Whelp.
Yeah looking at the pricing not really the best thing it’s only seems like we’re paying for the higher minimum wage salary of the retail store employees just bothers me a bit

Apple appears to have discontinued the option for the 8-GPU Core M1 on the M1 Air. 7-cores or nothing. So, it's:

- Full M1 (8 CPU Cores + 8 GPU Cores) on the Mac mini
- Binned M1 (8 CPU Cores + 7 GPU Cores) on 2-port 24" iMac
- Full M1 (8 CPU Cores + 8 GPU Cores) on 4-port 24" iMac
- Binned M1 (8 CPU Cores + 7 GPU Cores) on the M1 Air
- Binned M2 (8 CPU Cores + 8 GPU Cores) on the M2 Air
- Full M2 (8 CPU Cores + 10 GPU Cores) on M2 13" MacBook Pro

And we still have the 2018 Mac mini with 8th Gen 6-core i5 and i7 CPUs in the mix!

This low-end lineup is lopsided AF!

24gb is such a weird spec, never seen it in any previous laptop, it is a hardware limitation such as triple channel or apple don't want the m2 to get into the m1 pro territory.
Apple had 3GB of RAM in the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus. Not to mention in the seventh, eighth, and ninth generations of iPad, the 5th Generation iPad mini, and the third generation iPad Air. It's definitely not a power of two, but they've definitely done it before with their SoCs. Not sure that it's an intentional crippling of the M2 to make it not get to M1 Pro territory. More likely that the M2 Pro will have a 48GB of RAM option in addition to the M1 Pro's current 16GB and 32GB options.

8GB RAM on base MBA *and* 13" MBP still? 🤦‍♂️ That's so Apple of Apple
I watched a few reviews on some Windows laptops over the last year and they pretty much unanimously we’re lambasted for the “pathetic for 2022” 8GB of RAM on the base model.

What does this tell me?

You are about to see a media blitz regarding how RAM is different on the Mac. 😂

They’ll keep doing it until consumers push back. Apple is becoming a RAM company. 😂
LOL A RAM COMPANY.

It’s a version of price discrimination. Apple wants to capture the high volume low margin consumers who buy the base 8GB/256GB version. Apple also knows that people in the know/power users/rich people are willing to pay big bucks. So they charge an extra $400 when it costs them like $40 for that extra RAM and SSD. This way they capture the low volume high margin business as well.
