HUGE HUGE HUGE miss. Everyone I know who works in an office and works remote uses two external screens. Apple is throwing this huge market in the trash can. These people are not creative pros. They don't need high horsepower They just need two MATCHING screens. Apple seems very out of touch with the market right now.
I suspect the vast majority of MacBook Air users are regular consumers/students that will either never use an external display or if they do, will only ever use one.

Every office that uses Macs I've worked in bites the bullet on MacBook Pro - mainly for 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. The 14" Pro is excellent for that and costs $1,999. The new Air with those specs costs $1,699, so for the extra $300 businesses get M1 Pro (with 14 graphics cores), ProMotion, MiniLED, and the multi-display support some of their employees may need.

Makes your wallet lighter than Air.
This is insanely cheap, at least compared to their Pro models that are $4K+. I'll be buying one in Starlight just for around the house. $1100 vs my iPad Pro that was more expensive.
Come on YouTube reviewers. Get your reviews done on the 16GB RAM M2 MBA's ASAP and then flood the Apple Refurb store with them so I can pick one up for cheap in 4-5 months :p
iJustine has already had the M2 for several years, so the review will be any second now that she's allowed to release!

New MacBook Pro has 3 usb-c ports.....

How does everyone feel about it being fanless?

My old MacBook 12 is fanless and it drove me crazy for years because it would get scorching hot (yes, scorching hot; to a point where it would burn my hand if I touched it underneath).

I wonder if the newer chipset and components solve any of this.

8GB starting with a $200 8GB bump is insulting.

Totally agree.

The M2 air is amazing(wish it had a face id in the notch but i guess that will be the next magical upsell..) but the price gouging from apple is ridiculous, I understand from a pure capitalist greed point why they done it due to the the M1 being amazing value for money and there was no real competition but $1200 for 8gb 256gb passes a price barrier which is unacceptable in mid 2022.
It feels like apple at the last minute applied $100 to their initial pricing. M1 at 899 and M2 at 1099 would make more sense but the final pricing puts it too close to the pro which similar to the intel days looks like the better value as its notchless, extra battery life, better screen, touchbar and higher performance due to its fan.

Also the foreign pricing is getting out of control in non US markets. I know these prices include crazy 20%+ sales tax(VAT) but €1,529.00 in EU and £1249(which is also the same price as the 8cpu7gpu M1 imac!) in the UK is ridiculous, I also think this is the first time the £ number of a product is higher than the $ number due to the sterling's crashing exchange rate.

M1 MBA doesn't get hot. Intel is going through a NetBurst period.

My M1 MBA can get very warm. I haven’t figured out why, but it gets so warm that I can’t use it on my lap.

So the 2 tb ports are still on just one side, 8gb of ram default config, jacked up prices, limited to single external monitor, no more wedge design?...strong pass!

That's the last time I'm listening to the "Wait" crowd!

Was umming and ahhing about the M1 Air at around £800 refurbished... "nooo you should wait and see what the new one is like" - now even this old model has had a price hike, not to mention the eye watering price of the new one...

I'd have hoped they'd do 16GB by now also. Why have Apple always got to skimp on RAM.

For me the base M2 Air looks just about perfect to complement my maxed out M1 iMac. (Replacing my 2014 Air.)

I simply don't use a laptop for anything demanding, and don't mind files staying on iCloud when they're safely stored on my 2TB iMac SSD, and 8gb memory is plenty when I won't be running half as many apps/tabs as I do on the desktop.

Fresh design, better webcam and slightly improved screen, speakers, etc., are all welcome...

Hmm... "Midnight" looks rather smart!

The euro prices are eye-watering. Opting for 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage (~€ 2.000) gets you much too close to the MBP 14”, especially if you do not buy it directly from Apple.

I was thinking about getting one, but given the prices in Europe, I guess I can wait for the M2 MBP.
I would expect new MBPs to make similar price jumps. Not to mention, how likely is it that M2 MBPs will be released soon?

The M2 Air is not a good deal. So you get about 18% speed improvement (and a few other bits) for >20% price increase. More in some countries. WTF !
Inflation included I guess. Also do not like the design. The air was special (in part) due to the tapered edge. The hard cut off drop edge of the pro’s is nowhere near as appealing.

24gb is such a weird spec, never seen it in any previous laptop, it is a hardware limitation such as triple channel or apple don't want the m2 to get into the m1 pro territory.
Could be they're sticking with two modules, but their suppliers have upped the max density per module to 12 GB.

Think it might be due to apple not wanting to cannibalize M1 pros

HAHA that's true also with the multiple colours there will be more open box returns due to people preferring a different colour model.. but its a shame that the 'refurb' price will be what the new price should be anyway!

The 13" Pro does seem oddly positioned. I guess they are keeping it to maintain a price point without making a big investment. Perhaps in a year or two, they will drop the price of the "new" Air (or inflation makes $1199 the new $999) and retire both the older design MacBook Air and 13" Pro. What's interesting is that with the 10-core GPU, the MacBook Air is priced identically to the 13" Pro.

wtf I just noticed that, It makes the air look even worse. Also there will be a big performance hit due to it being fanless and thin chassis, so not only is the 10gpu m2 air the same price as the pro it will be slower and have less features?(no touch bar, smaller battery, inferior screen) ?

why is apple deliberately nerfing the air like this?

Do you know that the screen is going to be inferior? For the M1 MBA vs M1 MacBook Pro it was true but they upped the spec on the M2 MBA to be 500 nits. Every other spec for the display between the two seem to be the same. Both P3 wide with True Tone.

It's actually $400 more. The minimum to get an M2 Air with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD is $1599 (standard pricing).

You were comparing a binned M1 Pro to a non-binned M2 Air. If you want to compare minimum pricing with a certain amount of RAM and storage, you need to look at the binned version of both (particularly since the binned version of the M2 Air is more than enough processing power for most routine office work).

And one guy posted on MR that his office was hoping to go with the M1 Air, but decided to stay with PC's because they all ran two displays, and couldn't justify paying the price for the MBP, since they didn't need the extra processing power. So yeah, if you're already a Mac shop, you bite the bullet. But what if you're a PC shop thinking of switching to Mac? Those are the customers Apple is losing out on.

I really wanted to like the new Air. In fact, I still do - I can overlook the single external screen limitation, and given that the M2 is likely to go into an iPad Pro, the lack of a fan has most likely been accounted for properly (and silence is nice). With a dedicated charging port, I can even overlook the fact that it only has two TB ports.

But 8GB of RAM. And $200 to get an additional 8GB of RAM. With the 10 core GPU, 512GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM, it's $1,699 - which is only $50 less than the best 14" MBP price I've seen - and the only thing you're giving up there is 0.8 lbs, a bit of sleekness, and Midnight blue.

My 2015 13" rMBP already has 16GB of RAM, and when I have dozens of tabs open, it definitely helps. I would've hoped that seven years on, we'd have moved on from 8GB base RAM and that we'd have 16GB/32GB as our starting points.

Ah well. the rMBP is still satisfactory for now, so I guess we'll see what next year brings.

The M1 MBA is also fanless and has been amazing. Very rarely has it gotten hot. The Core m chips in the old 12" MacBooks were garbage from every angle.
