I think they need to cull a couple from their lineup and keep things simple. Although cheaper iPads do get people into the ecosystem, it just seems complex, especially for people who aren't a member of a forum like this and know tech. Apple prided themselves on simplicity.

Who here is stupid enough to pre-order a iPad mini 2.25?
Call me El Jobso: never saw the purpose of the Mini in the first place. Give me a full sized iPad, please. Conversely I am still grumbling for Apple not offering an iPhone 6 "Classic" for those of us who think small phones are a virtue.

Steve Jobs would have bitch slapped the person who came up with the idea of selling 5 iPads simultaneously.

It seems fairly obvious -- why emphasize a spec that, by design, they intend to upgrade very slowly to preserve margins, and is also poorly understood by non-tech savvy consumers, the bulk of Apple's market.

It's obvious they don't want to talk about it (Ars Technica asked yesterday but Apple refused to say). Yet there's plenty they talk about that non-tech savvy consumers wouldn't understand. Apple should be able to own the decisions they make. If they feel 1GB RAM is sufficient in the iPad then own it, don't hide it.

iPad mini 3 as announced makes zero sense. It's essentially the same as the mini 2 with Touch ID. Is Touch ID and access to Pay really worth $100? IMO Apple's iPad line-up right now should be three products - retina mini at $299, iPad Air at $399 and Air 2 at $499. But perhaps Apple is planning to update the retina mini with A8 next spring (when iPhone demand has died down a bit) and so didn't want to remove it from the line up only to re-introduce it next year. My guess is they're not expecting many sales of the current mini 3. And if it doesn't get updated then that tells me Apple is done with the mini and will slowly phase it out.

Lol @ pre orders for an iPad, they never sell out

The iPad air last year had significantly more hype and I was able to just stroll into an apple store and buy one easily

But by crippling the amount of memory sold on the mini 2 they will force a lot of people to the mini3.

So then it (mini3) is technically the same price as before (mini2) with 1 extra feature. Through that lens its not SOO bad.

You can only save $100 if you're a limited user who doesn't have a lot of apps or music / movies to store, or are willing to use cloud streaming rather than local storage.

Then you'll have people pulling the "unapologetically" line out again and using it in brute force... ;):D

It's back and live now!

Edit: Nevermind - some pages are back, can't actually order the iPad Air 2 yet. Sorry.

Because iOS typically runs far, far better than Android X amount of RAM, and having less RAM means longer battery life, so Apple keeps RAM lower and avoids calling attention to a spec that will be abused by those who ignore real world performance in favor of a spec sheet.

What does this even mean? How do you abuse a specification?
While I agree that iOS is optimized to run on less RAM than it's Android counterparts, the battery life claim is dubious since the savings, whether it be 5% or 10%, will equate to minutes. If you can provide me with some info showing a significant hit to battery due to an extra GB of RAM, I would love to see it. Rogifan is right. Apple should own the decision and stop being evasive about it.

I agree 100%. Otherwise, it's left to forum analyst to speculate and we get answers like the one above.

OK, but who on the Earth would buy iPad mini 3? paying 100 bucks more for gold color and touch ID? really?

El Jobso, if you don't see the purpose for something, you aren't the target audience.
