The iPad Mini 2 is really the only decent deal on a Mini. The original is only $50 less than it, which makes it pointless to buy it. The Mini 3 is basically a 2 with TouchID for $100 more.

The Mini lineup is a ripoff, which sucks because if I bought an iPad, I'd want the Mini.

It's obvious they don't want to talk about it (Ars Technica asked yesterday but Apple refused to say). Yet there's plenty they talk about that non-tech savvy consumers wouldn't understand. Apple should be able to own the decisions they make. If they feel 1GB RAM is sufficient in the iPad then own it, don't hide it.

But that's my point, they don't want to own it and they do want to hide it because they need to preserve margins. If they talk about it then they do own it and 1GB on an iPad is hard to intellectually justify year after year. It's like when restaurants used "pink slime" in their beef. They didn't advertise that either, hoping to slide it under the radar as long as possible because it allowed for healthy margins.

The iPad Air 2 is the only reasonable upgrade. I can't believe what they did to the Mini 3.

With 5 options Apple's iPad lineup is a mess.

I have to believe that the iPad Mini 3 we got was "Plan B".
I think there must have been a more ambitious update in the works as well but something didn't work out so Apple went with this.

It's not like the mini 3 isn't still a great little tablet. But with such a small update I think they should have knocked the price down. (And made 32 GB the entry-level model, but we knew they weren't going to do that.)

Really?!?!!??

Wasn't the iPhone pre-order available on the online store at like 3AM EST? We're going on 10AM and NOTHING!!!

So the iPad mini 3 still has an A7 chip?

This. There needs to be iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2 and that's it.

At a push, keep the 16 GB iPad Air 1 and iPad mini 2 to cover a lower price point, but no more.

AFAIK the only thing the iPad mini 3 has versus the iPad mini 2 is Touch ID and a much higher price point. If I had to buy an iPad today, it would still be an iPad mini 2. Same CPU/GPU, same display and I think the same amount of RAM.

Also, given the small price difference between an iPad mini and iPad mini 2, A5 vs A7 and regular vs retina display, I couldn't possibly recommend the original iPad mini to anyone.

Is that supposed to be a pun on Anheuser-Busch InBev. They are the world's largest brewer and they act that way so not sure what would make them "bush league." Same goes for Apple being the biggest company by market cap. If Appel knows one thing its how to sell and the "dance" that accompanies it.

You're not aware of the American vernacular, "Bush League?"

Pretty sure it is a reference to the lower minor leagues of professional baseball, but what would I know, only having grown up in a bush league town of Fargo, ND. Has NOTHING to do with any corporation, and definitely not Anheuser-Busch.

Well, the 32 GB Mini 2 is $150 cheaper than it was a few days ago (I think?).
That looks like a pretty good sweet spot.

Lol @ pre orders for an iPad, they never sell out

The iPad air last year had significantly more hype and I was able to just stroll into an apple store and buy one easily

The last iPad I bought, iPad 2, had quite hefty waiting times. I queued to get it on launch day, but it sold out before even half the queue had got theirs (luckily for me, I got one)

Yeah, the pricing isn't right but they might need to clear out the existing rMini. Calling it an rMini 3 is kind of lame. Like the analyst said before the launch Apple focused on the iPad Pro for this cycle so the rMini wasn't stated for an overhaul. I wouldn't be surprised to see an iPhone 6ish overhaul for the rMini next year.

So do you think 16G can be enough ? If i don't do video editing on the iPad but just text and web browsing, a few flicks now and then ?

May I be the first to welcome you to American culture. I'm going to assume that you are either very young or so stuck in the tech community that you are unfamiliar with outside culture. "Busch League is a well known phrase referencing the old minor league of NASCAR racing sponsored by Busch beer.

Steve was wrong. Tim Cook is another John Sculley and his recent moves approved it.

Or maybe a mashup between Sculley and Spindler. Sculley was father of the Newton; Cook delivered the Apple Watch. Spindler birthed way too many just slightly similar Mac models to thoroughly confuse consumers; Cook is selling 3 different iPad mini models, two of which are only differentiated by Touch ID and gold aluminum.

I don't get it? Was touch ID all they added to the iPad mini?

Yes and it's hard to understand. Especially for an extra $100. Clearly Apple is trying to pull the wool over consumer's eyes -- iPad 3 contains a bigger number than iPad 2 therefore it must be better. Question is, will it backfire?

iPad mini 3 as announced makes zero sense. It's essentially the same as the mini 2 with Touch ID. Is Touch ID and access to Pay really worth $100? IMO Apple's iPad line-up right now should be three products - retina mini at $299, iPad Air at $399 and Air 2 at $499. But perhaps Apple is planning to update the retina mini with A8 next spring (when iPhone demand has died down a bit) and so didn't want to remove it from the line up only to re-introduce it next year. My guess is they're not expecting many sales of the current mini 3. And if it doesn't get updated then that tells me Apple is done with the mini and will slowly phase it out.

It's a brutal "upgrade" to the mini. I have the mini 2, got it 3 months ago and I don't have the usual "gotta have it" thing going. The Air 2 looks amazing though.
