Anyone still considering the 13"....im 50/50

ha, nope... I already have a 2.5 core 2 mbp with 4 gig of ram ( which is going on 2 and a half years old)... I don't really care about what graphics card it has.... So it's not really worth it to me. I would if they had an i5 or i7 :)

I noticed there aren't any 13" MBPs in Apple's refurb store at the moment, but plenty of 15" and 17" though. Do you think they realize there is not much difference between the current generation and the last generation and decided to bury the old ones so as not to make that point too obvious?

Guh, every time, every bloody time Apple launch a new product someone cocks this calculation up and bitches about it. US prices do NOT include sales tax, UK's do. Using the base macbook as an example:

UK Price - £999.99
UK Price without VAT - £851.06
UK price in Dollars at current exchange rate of 0.6483 - $1,312.74
US Price - $1,199.00
Difference - $113.74

That difference has to cover any additional taxes that get paid to the UK government, higher transport cost, additional costs from lower volume of devices (UK localisation costs) and also absorb any short term changes in the interest rate. It's actually pretty damn close to where it should be when everything's taken into account so if you want to blame anyone blame our lovely money-grubbing government.

I understand what you say and damn right I'm bitching about it - especially since the xrate is so sh*t compared to what it was 12/18 months ago when it was nearly $2 to the £1

And you are right when compared to importing individually from the US for the base model 13" but let's take the 15 inch mid range - not much in that either!

$2000 base price from US and £1650 from the UK (£1400 ex VAT)
You'll get £1.52/$1 rate right now on a credit card so cost is £1315
Add 0% Duty = that's right- NO Duty on consumer electronics from US to UK
Add 17.5% VAT £230
Add Int Shipping from a mate in the US say £60 inc insurance
Total cost to import from the US = £1600

So, yes, you are right - £50 in it at most and then you don't get apple care etc in the UK for a US based purchase

So, yes - I do blame our money grabbing government!

Still, let me rant ;-)

I personally am glad that I waited...even for the 13. Faster gpu, faster cpu, and larger hard drive standard. Longer battery life is a plus.... basically a better computer. An i5 would've been nice, but I can deal ;)

True words, ive just orderd my 13 inch MBP. I've been waiting for 3 months and I had hoped a major update, but they are after all updated:)

I'm glad battery updates, it is a great help for students at the school, like me:)

Anyway, i3 vs. C2D = well, if apple can make a better mac with an C2D instead of i3, its okay, the performance difference is low.
Would you like an 2.0 i3 or an 2.4 C2D?

Sometime at the end of last year, someone asked when the minis will be iX. My answer was after 13 inch MBP, but said that I didn't expect that to happen for the 13 inch until the generation after this one. However this update took so long, that I had decided that I must have been wrong. There would be no way after all this time that they would just increase the clock speed on the 13. Instead I find that I have never been so sad to be proven right. They say that the pessimist is never disappointed, well I'm a pessimist and I am disappointed.

Jeez, when are people EVER going to learn that UK prices include VAT and the US prices DO NOT include sales tax? The difference is less than £100 when you take taxes into consideration.

Oh shut up! I forgot about US sales tax and anyway - if you purchase in certain states there is no sales tax - and even when not, it's not 17.5% like our crappy country charges. I know you're right but I still don't like the prices!

First post - just registered yesterday.

It's been about 4 months since I decided to take a leap and jump n the Mac bandwagon, and now the new models are finally out. Yay!

I've decided to get the middle 15 inch model with the widescreen display.

For those interrested in knowing the base price of that model is in Denmark (ie. without the widescreen) for exchange rate comparison, it's $2737.

Luckily I've made a deal with my boss though, so I won't have to pay more than 40% of that. :D ...otherwise I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a laptop...not even an Apple one.

For anyone who has already bought the new mbp. Can you tell me what your delivery date is? I'm flying out on wendesday and I would like to have it with me. But if delivery dates are on the 21 or later I have to wait till I get home to order :/

Once again, the EU price includes VAT while the US price does not. IIRC, that's 17% in most EU countries.

Add in the extra costs for localization, shipping, support, and all the paternalistic EU laws that affect Apple and it's not that far out of line.

OK, i show you the difference:

US price (without VAT) = $2299
in Euro => € 1693
adding European VAT 19% => € 2015
official apple price (with 19% VAT) = € 2249

Difference = € 234
Difference in US$ = $318

That's a 10% higher price for European customors, compared to US customers... Thats a lot! Who don't wanna save $300+ ???

By the way, there are no more extra costs! Shipping is the same for the US products, the MBP's sold in the US also come from China and need to be shipped! Support? There is no difference either and which "paternalistic EU laws" are you talking about that make products sold in the EU 10% more expensive???

If it was that way, it would be the same with all electronic goods manufactured in asia, but thats not the case!

lucked out

Euro is about to crash, so it might get even worse.

What does that have to do with the current exchange rate? If apple was smart they could hedge currencies, so that abrupt forex changes wouldn't effect them short-term (6-12 months)...

Apple should be more worried about a soon to come reevaluation of the Yuan, because that will make ALL products built in China more expensive for EVERYBODY!

i just bought mine and it says the 16th to the 22nd, i got the 2-3 day delivery(18.00) and it was custom config

Looks like apple failed at including the i5 and i7 on the 13"

This is quite funny.

Also, some people seem to think that this i7 is quad core... it's not.

Looks like you failed at marketing 101.

Seems a mixed update for many people.

First, the :(

C2D on 13" :(
No USB 3 :(
No 1024MB video RAM :(
No HDMI :(
No Blu-Ray :(
£150 for anti-gloss screen :(
High-resolution screens a pricey option :(
Still no PCI slot on the 15" :(
SSDs still super expensive :(

Then, the :)

i5s and i7s in 15" and 17" :)
Longer battery life :)
Better GPUs :)
Auto-switch between discreet and integrated GPUs :)
Larger HDD as standard :)
More RAM as standard :)

When does everyone reckon the next update will be? ;)

I admit that I'm also dissapointed in the Duo Core still in 13" models. But as you write, you cant satisfy everyone and it will always be you win some you loose some.

The new 15" lineup is sweet, but im sad since i planned the 13" + an Apple Cinema Display.

The 13" base model gets (1) increased bat life, (2) increase in memory to 4GB, (3) a step up in processor speed, and (4) ambient light controlled backlit keyboard! This is a VERY nice upgrade for the SAME price as the "old" model.

This should be a VERY capable little road warrior.

cheers

default 2.4GHz i5 with BTO HR glossy display.

should have it late this week or early next week :)

edit: upgrading from 2.4GHz C2D (pre-unibody).

For all those that are saying the GT330 and 320 are just 9700 and 9600 rebadged, you are wrong. As it supports DX10.1 which isn't possible on the G9x cores. These are G200 based.

Overall the updgrades are good, not too happy about the price increase though :(.

Not surprised about the 13" C2D as Apple probably couldn't deal with the thermal requirements of two GPU's in such a small chassis. Notice the 320M is integrated not discrete. All the other models have Intel HD as integrated and the 330M for discrete with dynamic switching between the two.
