I am SO ready for a retro Apple (retro being, in my mind, a throwback to the mid 2000’s). Truly the golden era of Apple, where they weren’t afraid to make fun niche products, such as the iPod Shuffle. There was a time when Apple products really were fun! Where you felt excited to have an iPod or an iPhone in your pocket. It’s gotten so clinical over the years. Ive’s flat design plus Arendts making the stores “fashion designer” locations. Isn’t there a happy medium between 3D everything and completely flat? Isn’t there a way to make the products themselves trendy instead of relegating that to colorful cases? What the heck is the point of making the most beautiful product in the world just to cover it up in rubber?!

Really hoping we get back to the good ol’ days.

Yup, definitely miss the fun and adventurous Apple in the original iMac and iPod days!

In New Zealand we don't have Apple stores. However I have been into Apple stores in NYC,Paris, London, Sydney, HongKong, Surfers Paradise, etc etc.
I bought 3rd party hardware, software, my 12" G4 MacBook Pro , and other things from The store. I have even been to 1 Infinite loop and bought t-shirts, cups, pens and so on. Yep I am a fan boy.

NOW however, I don't even go through the door, there is nothing in the stores to bring me in. I can get everything I need in local shops and online.
The range of stuff at the store at Infinite loop the last time I was there was disappointing , boring. Gone is the quirky "Siri , how do you coffee stains out of a t-shirt" , replaced with a plain coloured t-shirts with a barely visible Apple logo.

I’m very happy that Ahrendts is gone. That stupid gold watch was all I needed to see to know that she was a horrific fit for Apple. Good to see the stores getting back to some of the fun things the used to do.

I've often wondered about this. With the betas of iOS 13 I used on my XS Max, it was gone completely and replaced with the press and hold method. Apple sold many iPhone models with 3D Touch as a selling point, something to differentiate models, and now they are getting rid of it with a software update.

Doesn't it seem to be a bit dirty to sell a product with an advertised feature, only to then retroactively remove said feature down the road?
Really hope they don’t remove it in the final build.

Strewth. The internet these days is such a toxic pit of negativity. It feels like every single comments section for every story on every website is just an excuse to whine like a baby about something and/or attempt to be funny and edgy. An article about a shop window and within seconds people are blathering on about the colour of something Apple made fifteen years ago. Gordon Bennet, change the record!

Ahead of the upcoming iPhone event that's set to kick off tomorrow, some Apple Store locations will have their windows blocked off with black curtains in order to make changes to the front window displays.

Twitter user Brian Roemmele yesterday tweeted a teaser about the upcoming change, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman explained in another tweet that Apple is planning to bring back "the old-school 3D front windows" at some store locations.

An Apple retail employee contacted MacRumors and confirmed Gurman's report. Apple Store workers recently practiced putting up the black curtains and were also instructed to clean out and fix floor mechanisms that haven't been used in years. This likely includes wires and other equipment used for anchoring the front displays.

Apple previously used intricate, eye-catching window displays with cutouts and designs showing off new products and features, but the practice was discontinued with the launch of the updated Apple Store designs.

Former Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts and Jony Ive worked on the updated Apple Stores, but Ahrendts has since departed and Ive is set to leave the company at the end of the year, which is perhaps why Apple is now prepared to make some changes. Deirdre O'Brien, Apple's head of people, has taken over the company's retail initiatives.

Apple frequently changed its window display setups back when it used window displays, and many of the designs are still well known, such as the colored balls used for the iPhone 5c launch.

In some stores that have seen redesigns, it's not clear how the new window displays will work, but it looks like many retail store displays will soon get more interesting to look at.

Holy God! I hope they don't get rid of those child like toad stool seating! I mean it is better to look good perched down low where you can't block views of the hardware walls ;)

Add my vote to these displays being AR-interactive.

How about the whole store! Unfortunately I get seasick with AR o_O

Okay, harbinger of doom. Seems like you can predict the future. Tell us more
It's hater spew, nothing more.
It reminds me of a drunk on a city bus, who wakes up for a moment when the bus hits a pothole, mutters something incomprehensible, and goes back to sleep.

Maybe this isn't the best website for you to be on. Have you looked into Facebook?

As a former Apple Retail employee, I can tell you those 3D windows were about the most annoying things ever to install. We seriously hated them and they took forever.

As a former retail employee, I absolutely LOVED doing overnights/visuals and setting up window displays. And from 2012-2015 we had the worlds largest in mall apple store, so you can imagine the scale of these displays.

These brought so much character to the store and I'm happy to see them come back.

As a former employee, Angela gone is a great thing.
These window displays are and will always be the dumbest idea ever.
Apple stores need a makeover. They are stale and outdated.
Services are the future for Apple, not product or retail.

I almost forgot about Apple tags. It’s probably what I’m looking forward to most tomorrow. There’s a few things I can think of attaching them too. I just hope they can easily be attached to keychains, but I’m sure the accessory market will take care of that.

They probably won't even have a hole in them, because, you know, keys and backpacks and stuff are so old school.

Let’s see how many stores get them. My guess is the ones that will are mall stores that haven’t been redesigned yet.
