how is it anti-customer? How often does anyone want to change their monitor mount type except when, apparently, it’s an Apple monitor?

And what’s preventing customers from just buying the VESA variant and mounting to whatever standard VESA stand they want to?
In the last 7yrs of having my current monitors? They have gone from stands to arms, back to stands, then arms again depending on my desk and current living situation.

The height-adjustable stand is pretty pointless in my opinion. It's inflexible and takes up too much space.

The lowest position is where it would be with the non-height-adjustable stand, so you don't gain any flexibility in the downward direction. In the upward direction you have 10 cm flexibility, which is not enough to be useful for many use cases, e.g. setting the display so high that your MacBook screen fits underneath it.

If you want height-adjustable, VESA mount + good third party arm makes way more sense. At least then you have actual flexibility, not a few inches of pseudo-flexibility.
They made this display at least an inch lower than the previous 27” iMac, so anyone 6-ft or taller basically needs to spring for the height adjustment. I was on the fence until I set it up and realized how much lower it was than what I was used to. Up to 10cm higher is perfect. I have one monitor on top of the Mac (10cm tall) and the height is just a little too high now. Just not sure why we have to wait 10 weeks for these height adjustable models to arrive.

Apple just seems to becoming a worse and worse company when it comes to repair, service, and just basically simple ease of use. I was pondering selling my M1 Air for a 14in Pro but now I'm wondering if I even want to support a company that makes it a PITA to do basic things. Its like every time I start to really like Apple again, they then start doing things like this.
The 27” iMac it replaced had a fixed, unadjustable stand, or an optional VESA mount. This adds a height-adjustable mount option. If anything, Apple became more responsive by adding an option.

And you haven’t been able to do that with the 27” iMac ever (or the 24” iMac still) unless you order(ed) the version with the VESA mount, which did not come with a stand.

It’s really hard to believe that Apple, with all its financial and engineering resources, can’t design a beautiful, cost-effective, height adjustable and swiveling stand that comes standard on all iMacs and displays.

Cost-effective is a relative concept, and we all know Apple makes their money selling grossly overpriced hardware…they’ve never been in this business to make affordable gadgets. Of note: original price-tags on the old Cinema Displays (as small as 22-23”, and as large as 30”) were $3k+ (!). Comparatively, the 27” Thunderbolt displays were a relative steal, at $1k. I’m just glad they have a standalone display product at the lower price point again.

Interesting, say its not user replaceable, then charge if they still want it replaced. Apple is finding new ways to nickel and dime people so they don't have to flat out raise prices....except they are raising prices of every new product that comes out, so theres that.

How is this new? Apple never offered an iMac (of the current and immediately previous design) with a height-adjustable stand. They did and do offer iMacs with optional VESA mounts. Can this be added later? I'm guessing yes, for a fee, though it is a no-additional-cost option at initial purchase.

"That's how we have always done it" is usually not a great reason...

I feel sorry for the people who thought they could purchase an in-stock item, instead of waiting and change out the stand after. Oops.

So what is the cost...and what happens with the stand in the case of you already having the height adjustable stand? If you go +$400 height adjustable back down to vesa mount...do you get a refund for "returning" the stand or do they give you the part back? Or do they charge you $100 labor and take your $400 upgrade?

This. Just buy the VESA option up front and pick a nice third party monitor arm.

Or adjust the height by stacking up your Apple boxes!

I saw some videos on the tilt and height adjustable stand for the Studio Display and my first reaction was that it's ugly and bulky! I've seen other tilt and height adjustable stands from other companies and they look both less complicated and more compact!

The goal of this one is that it is counterbalanced in such a way that it requires zero effort. The good news is that if this is not a priority for you, you can buy the vesa mount and get whatever stand you want.

As a Thunderbolt and Cinema Display user having adjustable display height means nothing to me and if anything adds another point of movement vibration to the display.

Years ago the 27" iMac had a user swappable stand/vesa mount. Maybe that was before Jony Ive got to it with his Form over Function approach to design. I bought a 27" imac two years ago expecting I could swap out the mount later, as I had done with a previous machine. With Apple, it's often 2 steps forward and one step back.
