Do we have any recent updates/anecdotes on being able to change the stands?
I wouldn't count on it until the VESA/height adjust displays are more easily available. they're still getting out orders from March & April. seems they're finally shortening future delivery dates and meeting the end of delivery estimates though

I just ordered the Studio Display with the standard tilt-adjustable stand by phone today. I did that after asking the sales rep whether the stand could be replaced with the tilt-and-height adjustable stand later at an Apple Store, if needed. She checked with her associates and told me it could be done. No price was quoted.

I just talked with someone in store (Apple Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek) and she checked with the Genius Bar admin who says that upgrading the stand is not possible and needs to be purchased with the desired configuration. They also searched for internal documentation and found nothing.

It is probably planned for when they have more stock of it, that's my guess anyway. The internal documentation they can tell you about would only be the current documentation and not any future plans.

It's not documented yet ...

I wanted to share how I got my Studio Display upgraded from the “Tilt-adjustable stand” to the “Tilt-and height-adjustable stand" for free.

I preordered the base model Studio Display with the “Tilt-adjustable stand” back when it was announced and received it on launch day. I immediately regretted not getting the height-adjustable stand because the one without it sits too low on my desk. But because the height adjustable stand model was heavily backordered, I didn’t want to go through the hassle of returning the monitor and waiting to receive the height adjustable model.

I decided I would eventually take my Studio Display into the Apple Store for a stand upgrade, OR sell the monitor and buy the height adjustable model once it became more readily available.

I was dreading taking my Studio Display into the Apple Store for the stand upgrade due to the inconvenience, so I was wondering if there might be an easier way. It turns out that the AppleCare+ I purchased for my Studio Display entitles me to request “onsite service” or “courier pick up” for a repair.

So I decided to call Apple and ask about this. After getting the run around for a bit, I was told by the AppleCare representative on the phone that “courier pickup” had been initiated and that I should expect a call from a local Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) within 1 business day to coordinate the repair. When I asked how much the stand upgrade would cost, I was told it would be $0, covered under my AppleCare+. I assumed this was a mistake.

After the call I didn’t receive any confirmation emails from Apple or anyone else, so I wasn’t sure what to expect next.

The next day, I received a call from Di-No Computers, a local AASP in my area. After asking me a few clarifying questions, the technician confirmed to me that he was able to order the stand upgrade kit for me and that the repair would be covered for free under my AppleCare+. He told me he would call back as soon as he received the parts to schedule a time for his driver to come pick up my monitor.

Long story short, the driver came to pick up my monitor on a Monday (a few days after the initial call), and he returned on Thursday with my monitor upgraded with the “Tilt-and height-adjustable stand”. And I paid nothing for it. Big shout out to Di-No Computers for doing great work and making this easy for me.

I can only assume that the reason this repair was free is because Apple did not account for the possibility of a non-accidental damage “repair” that shouldn’t be covered for free under AppleCare+. But I can’t complain.

See copy of the repair receipt from Di-No Computers below as proof (I’ve censored out my personal info).

I think you were just incredibly lucky that Apple 1. Entertained your request for AppleCare+ service, as there wasn't anything wrong with your display. and 2. upgraded it for free, as your display didn't need any repairing, or am I missing something

If you have AppleCare+ with your Apple Studio Display, you’re entitled to on-site service or courier pickup. So you just call Apple support and ask for it.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear. Did you tell them you wanted the mount replaced? Curious about the run around you mention.

An on-site service is totally different from equipment upgrade. What was wrong with your Studio Display that needed a repair?

There was some confusion where Apple Support thought this should be handled by Sales. So I ended up getting transferred back and forth between Sales and Support on the phone several times.

I never lied to anyone on the phone claiming my monitor was defective or damaged. I told the people I spoke to that I wanted my Studio Display stand upgraded and my understanding was that this could be performed by Apple Support as a “repair”.

It was actually the first person I spoke to who was able to set up the On-site service/courier pickup for the stand upgrade, but I didn’t believe he had set it up correctly because he said it would cost me $0 covered under AppleCare+. The last person I spoke to on the phone was in Apple Support and told me I would have to take the monitor to the Apple Store for the stand upgrade.

But then I got the call from Di-No computers the next day and the rest went as I previously described.

Are there any other updates on this process from anyone? I'm interested in the Costco $1350 ASD, and naturally they don't sell the VESA model at all. Is there any hope in getting the ASD, perhaps getting AppleCare, and then getting the VESA install kit placed on there...magically...somehow...?

I can’t promise that your experience will be the same as mine, but you can certainly try what I did.

Buy the tilt adjustable Apple Studio Display from Costco with AppleCare+ (or add AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchase). Then contact AppleCare over the phone to request on-site service or courier pickup (a benefit you are entitled to under your AppleCare+ agreement) to get the tilt stand replaced with a VESA mount adapter. Within a day or two, you should receive a call from a local AASP in your area to coordinate your on-site service or courier pickup.

If you have the same luck as I did, the “repair” will be covered for for free under your AppleCare+. Otherwise, you will likely have to pay $100-$200 for the service.

Your other option would be to wait for the VESA version to go back in stock on the Apple Refurbished store. It sells for $1359 when in stock.

I was thinking the same thing after hearing of the price drop. I'm just not sure I want to deal with all the trouble.

The ideal would be a vendor willing to match the standard price on a VESA model.
