The XDR has an elegant solution with the magnetic attachment. Why not replicate it? A single design decision even if Apple needed to charge more already for an overpriced display to avoid all the above benefit the customer.

^^ This.

Crazy ridiculous that they didn't replicate the great solution they came up with for the XDR

The best stand should come with the monitor for no price at all.
I agree. That is probably the biggest complaint I have with this display. I'm fine with this coming in at a higher price than the LG UltraFine 5K but I just can't imagine the margins are affected much at all by the inclusion of the height and tilt adjustable stand at the base price.

On one hand, Apple's displays have always been notably lacking on height adjustment until the Pro Display XDR. On the other hand, this is not bleeding edge tech (though it is probably not cheap to source 27in 5K IPS LCD panels due to economies of scale) so I think Apple could have done a little more at 1599 and not stair-stepped people to 1999 right off the jump.

I ended up ordering one but I fully recognize it is an outright BAD deal at 1999. It is an acceptable deal at 1599 considering the market and the comparative quality improvements made by Apple compared to the LG offering. So basically I knowingly let Apple stair-step me like the dumb hog consoomer that I am.

That’s my main point. The XDR has an elegant solution with the magnetic attachment. Why not replicate it? A single design decision even if Apple needed to charge more already for an overpriced display to avoid all the above benefit the customer. Who needs to think a little more here? smh
So, there are a LOT of folks who don’t plan on changing the stand (or will just get VESA) and are happy with $1,599. The idea from someone that doesn’t plan on buying the $1,599 monitor is to increase it’s price to yet another level that they would ALSO not pay? This is what I mean by Apple is targeting a very specific user. Trying to make someone who’s not going to buy the monitor happy by adding a feature that wouldn’t lead to that person buying the monitor wouldn’t be a good business decision.

Better to price it where they think it will sell well enough and let those who were going to complain anyway engage in the complaining. I doubt they expect to sell more than 500,000 of these a year over the next 10 years. VERY small number of people to make happy with this.

Well, it comes down to charging high prices and giving fewer options to consumers. The same issue comes with the display power cable that the user cannot unplug from the back without taking it to the Apple store. Just a bunch of head-scratcher decisions.

how is it anti-customer? How often does anyone want to change their monitor mount type except when, apparently, it’s an Apple monitor?

And what’s preventing customers from just buying the VESA variant and mounting to whatever standard VESA stand they want to?
I guess you haven't heard of this magical thing called "work from home" where suddenly people who had regular ole' monitors realized that a VESA mount can make things more ergonomic.

Right, “which options to provide” is the balancing act. Their guess is that a projected number of folks won’t care enough about being able to unplug the cable for it to make a difference in their purchasing decision. They’re also quite aware that there are a lot of people (who’d never pay $1,599 for this monitor anyway) for which unplugging the cable is paramount in their purchasing decisions. The monitor they released is the one for those that WOULD pay $1,599 for this monitor.

yes it’s a balancing act but the two things I mentioned (stand/power cable) doesn’t seem to be a big deal in terms of costs in manufacturing. Keep in mind, the panel tech (mostly similar to the old Ultrafine) is old and Apple is charging a premium for it despite improving the display in other areas. Well it is what it is. Cheers.

It doesn’t seem to be a big deal, but that is, indeed, what it is.

Well-marketed, yes. Well-priced, not so much. But that’s a decision for each consumer. Also, 1 billion is highly inflated: 1 active device ≠ 1 customer.

Has anyone managed to get a quote for this? I purchased a tilt stand but would love to get it upgraded without waiting the 8-10 weeks. Apple Support seemed to have no knowledge of any programme after providing details.

I saw some videos on the tilt and height adjustable stand for the Studio Display and my first reaction was that it's ugly and bulky! I've seen other tilt and height adjustable stands from other companies and they look both less complicated and more compact!
It’s actually an elegant design, IMO. It is very easy to adjust the height and tilt, and it is rock solid in any position.

Asked a couple of specialists in one of London's Apple Stores today and they both knew about the possibility of changing the stand, but had no idea about how much it would cost. Realistically it could probably be another 50% on top of the extra £/$400 upgrade for the stand itself if I had to guess

You'd hope that as part of the ludicrous extra $400 charge (for a friggin' stand) they'd install it for free...

A £600 upgrade would be horrendous. Looks like a couple of books are going under the stand!

Has anyone actually had their stand type switched by Apple? I'm wondering how long it takes. Right now, I can order an ASD with a regular stand and get it in about 4-5 weeks. If I choose the VESA mount (which I need), it's an 8-10 week wait. I figure it might be faster to get the regular stand, and then take it to Apple to have them switch it out.

I've been trying to get a stand replacement and both online support and my local Apple store are saying it's not possible.

I have tried as well, citing the articles all over the web. None of the apple folks seem to have any idea what I'm talking about! But isn't Apple usually pretty quick to correct misinformation? Maybe it's just not rolled out yet? I nabbed the standard tilt stand (because that was all I could find) but it turns out it's just a bit too tall when sitting. Definitely need the vesa adapter

aw i was hoping they would actually do it, I wonder if they're waiting for better availability

Yeah, I’m guessing “not possible” likely means “because we don’t have the part”. The fact that they have no information on it in store makes me think that they don’t plan to have any parts at the store for awhile (if they were coming soon, they’d have to get some info out to the stores ahead of time).

Those that have ordered the VESA version will likely get theirs before any parts get to the stores.

I wanted to get the display with the vesa mount, but it is not available until June. So my plan was to get the regular version with the stand and have Apple change it to vesa later... I called apple to verify if it is doable and they told me it is not possible, I dont know if it will ever be possible (I should have asked) but beware when buying because it seems like "Apple Stores Can Upgrade a Studio Display's Stand After Purchase" is not quite the case (not yet at least)...
