I'll be very surprised if the SIMs in the demo phones connect to any carrier. They'll be set up to allow activation and wifi only.

But can't you send txts and make calls from the Apple Store phones? That would mean they do work normally over 3G.

Here's why, Apple keeps it's users locked into Apple's ecosystem. That way Apple keeps all the money. One must buy all songs, videos & other content from iTunes

The moment an iPhone is unlocked via Jailbreak, then the owner is free to get content from other sources. Apple loses control & money... The two things Steve Jobs loves above all else.

Wut?

Most of my music is from other sources. I don't buy ringtones, but have custom ones on my phone. I don't buy videos from iTunes either, but carry stuff I've purchased with me. My e-books? None from Apple, but I've got a couple hundred on my iPad/iPhone. The music I've gotten from Apple? I can take to my other devices cause it's DRM free...

The one thing Apple has done right is making sure there's a path for content into the ecosystem for the most part... as long as you don't buy DRMed content, you don't get locked to ANY platform. But DRMed content will lock you into any platform, not just Apple's.

Now, apps are another story. Sad thing is that Apple isn't really the exception to the rule, they've just done a good job keeping it locked down compared to a couple other platforms (For WM, you just need a signed copy of RegEdit to dev unlock the phone, which HTC conveniently gets theirs leaked every couple months or so). Android is really the exception by being more open. Mobile Operators have always been touchy as hell when it comes to 3rd party code on their network. They've only recently started to learn to stop being so tight-gripped on their network. AT&T is still one of the more restrictive networks on top of that (used to be Verizon held that crown in the US, and on some devices, still does).

The real problem with jailbreaking is that to do it, you have to exploit security holes in the OS. Those security holes are Very Bad News(tm). It's a bit like finding a security hole in OS X and then complaining when Apple fixes it. Apple is of course going to fix it, especially when they get flak if they don't, and likely have a contract with AT&T to address security holes in the interests of keeping their network clean.

We can argue over why Apple locks down the platform... but for a company who gets flak for not keeping their products secure to then get flak for securing their products? That's just mind-boggling.

A few months later, that all changed when Apple estimated in a quarterly earnings call that almost 20% of iPhone sold so far had been unlocked. Not just jailbroken, but unlocked. This meant a loss in monthly royalties.

Most iPhones were being unlocked for you use outside of the States, when the iPhone was available in no other place in the world. This is no loss in any royalties whatsoever.

Couldn't u just memorize the ip adress of jailbreak me.com and put that in. That sometimes works, apple is smart but they don't think were that smart.

If all they did was a DNS redirect (which im pretty sure is true), then yes, going by IP address would fix the problem.

Well actually not so much as jailbreakme is a virtual host and not the web server root, so it won't work by IP.

Unfortunately you dont have a hosts file you can edit on the iPhone you can get at to override the DNS, so your out of luck.

I wonder how many people would be aghast at the loss of productivity that is suffered by the apple employees by the jailbreaking of these devices if it was happening to microsoft products? :D

I agree. I feel awful for all of those employees having to reset all of those iPads, iTouchs, iPhones. God that would suck!

I don't. They get paid to do their job. It's not difficult to hit a restore button in itunes. If you don't like your job, quit.

Undoing the work of inconsiderate jackasses is not what they're paid to do. And apparently it's too hard for some of you to understand that in order to "hit a restore button in iTunes", they have to remove those display phones from the floor, meaning that there are less phones for customers to play with.

Try thinking outside of yourselves for once.

i went to an at&t store to pick up an iphone that they insisted HAD to ship to them for whatever damn reason - they made me wait 45 minutes until someone was available just to give me the phone

screw them - i jailbroke their display phones - poor customer service = more work for them

+1

I went to my local mall and saw that one was just restored and was being put back on display as I was walking in... I quickly jailbroke it again and asked the same rep who restored it -- why is THIS iPhone different? and how come MY old iPHone can't do all of these things?

The hard part is not having to 'Click Restore in iTunes' to one phone, but it becomes an issue when you have to do it several times a day, day-after-day to 20,30,40+ display phones, thats what makes it hard and time consuming.

I like this quote from The Dark Knight
"Because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

or use mywi to make a wifi hotspot connect to that and then jailbreak!

Hahaha so true, I can just waltz right in with my phone broadcasting as a wifi hot-spot; connect the apple store's display phone to me and run the jailbreak. Gonna do it today

Is clicking restore and walking away to do something else such a daunting task for you?

Apple phones use a special image that's preloaded with certain demo apps, and locked down in some areas so people can't easily trash the display. So no, you can't pick up the phone and go to Settings > General > Reset.

To reset the phone, you have to get a special laptop used by the visual teams that has all of the special device images on it. And depending on the security system used to keep people from walking out with the demos, you may have to crawl under the table and disable it, so the USB cable can be unplugged and the iPhone attached to the visual laptop.

All in all, it's not a quick process, and it's not something Apple staffs extra people on shifts for.

Most demo phones do not have an active SIM card in them anymore.

There cant be that many having it happen to, it may be at most a few a day

can we do it via a proxy now? im really in the mood to annoy everybody who gets annoyed over this. f apple. f apple employees. f steve jobs. they have enough of my money that i dont care even a little about their welfare. also good luck trying to prove vandalism, you would pay thousands of dollars in court costs to mitigate 30 minutes in an employee's wasted time...so $10? that is, if you could even prove vandalism for something that is so easy to fix and causes no long-term damage.

*snip*

That makes you a bigger a#$% than the OP. Congrats!

Hmm... The OP was only reporting that Apple had blocked the site.

I don't think he's one of the a$$es...

There are plenty in this thread though. Some are already under "ignore" and the rest are on their way.

The only people you're really ***** are the customers that visit that store after you leave.

They're the ones that are going to have to wait longer to get hands-on with a demo device or to talk to an employee (when employees have to go around and reset the devices).
