Eh, lots of different fine points, but they do share something of a common starting point.

Really, for any given area (city/county/state) you need to check up on the various laws (last I saw, there was still an old law against eating ice cream on Sundays...) in your area. But no matter what, it's not a good idea to flip off police officers.

UK does not have a constitutional system, also the court system is far less adversarial. in any case, the main difference is that the 1st amendment applies solely to the US. many european states are fine with criminalizing offensive speech (denial of holocaust, for example). anyway, you dont seem to realize that the 1st amendment was incorporated (look up incorporation) to the states in 1925 and no state or local law will ever take precedence over it. any reasonable lawyer would have no problem proving this is bs.

even if it is a law, that doesnt mean its enforceable. especially a local or state law when it conflicts with free speech. the courts declare laws unconstitutional all the time. in the UK, the courts do not have this power, showcasing yet another major difference between the two systems. you are wrong and should not spread misinformation. if only more people knew their legal rights, the police would do a whole lot less damage.

That's all well and good, but because something falls under free speech doesn't mean it's without consequences. We're forgetting the almighty "oh you flipped me off. How cute. Looks like your taillight is out and your tires are a bit low, constituting a danger to others."

And berate an officer enough and you can be arrested for it if he decides there's a threat imminent. The charge wont be "Exercising Free Speech" of course. Pissed off officer and your word against his, i'd wager odds are with the cop.

At my local store an employee had to work almost 6 hours overtime to restore all the iphone, ipads and ipod touches that had been jailbroken by an ar… like you.

It is not funny, its criminal.

Can't something be both funny AND criminal? I'm pretty sure I've laughed at something that was against the law before. ;)

blah blah, if you want to argue practicalities we cant confirm thats pointless, so leave me out of it. if you have enough money, can afford a good lawyer and are willing to trust the justice system (the best institution in the US), then you will win. if you have no money and no knowledge, you will lose. so dont be ignorant, that is the moral of the story. not to overly respect thugs with a badge, err i mean cops. we (the taxpaying public) pay cops' salaries and write their rules of conduct. they work for us. this will probably not apply to the poorest and most discriminated (blacks, hispanics, arabs), but that is because they are unaware of their legal rights and do not have the money to enforce them.
