So many people here are getting upset or disappointed, simply because they know something about the internal components of a display. How about we all just judge the display based on how it functions.

Is it just me or does the studio display seem like a blatant cash grab? Specs are very underwhelming for such a price. I was really looking forward to getting one but not anymore.

Perhaps it is the "Apple TV" someone was asking for in the other thread?
Or it is the long awaited update to the 17" Powerbook?
Or they can make it into a wifi router if there is appropriate hardware in there? e.g. DisplayAirPort
Or a thread control for HomeKit - that is easy.

Who knows for sure though, maybe they will have additional plans or it is just economies of scale as the article suggests.
Is HomeKit with Thread just a software update away?

And AppleTV, not the little box; but a TV with a monitor (which is probably what @centauratlas is saying). What's missing? A tuner? And many wouldn't know they don't have that. We have an antenna for local stations.

All this is crazy, Why it costs 1500 because they threw everything but the kitchen sink. Why not just make a good monitor and not a jack of all trade master of non monitor.

Paying for components, Over-engineered monitor and the one thing they skimp on is the panel.
How did they skimp on the panel? It's a slightly brighter version of the one they sold in the 27" iMac.

Neat! Now let's jailbreak it.

It makes you wonder, though, what kind of liability it will be in the future when it stops receiving updates. It could do fun things like store persistent malware so you get reinfected even after a clean install of macOS. Or probably something more sinister and interesting that somebody more clever than me could think up. I guess there could be malware specifically targeting the display aspect. Probably to loop Nyan Cat over your menu bar.
Exactly. Added complexity always adds more potential problems.

And sadly their imaginations are so stunted that they're incapable of coming up with ideas on how a display with a cpu + memory, and tethered to a Mac, could be used for interesting extra features that Apple could introduce to the display in the future.
When have Apple ever added new features to a product after the fact? They want to sell new things to you repeatedly, not suddenly unlock new potential in an existing product.

Instead of adding all that stuff they could have put the same XDR panel. make it a 27 inch XDR

They did add third party apps to the iPhone in 2008, a year after Steve Jobs insisted that “web apps” were all anyone needed.

Well, doesn't a processor need SOME MEMORY in order to functionally run its tasks?
So, an A13 processor probably needs 32-64gb of memory to carry out multiple functions.
By today's standards, isn't 64gb a small amount of memory?
Just sayin.

Ahh, the studio display is like ET calling home now.
Wonder what these displays are ordered to do from Apple headquarters? ?

Apple could very well allow Intel Mac users to run iOS and iPadOS apps natively, like on M1 Macs, and developers to simulate their mobile apps at full speed in XCode by using the Studio Display’s A13 as a co-processor. Wouldn’t that be cool? And the same would go for Macs with Apple Silicon processors, the more power, the better.

I'll acknowledge this one partially. But the device already had that functionality from the first party. It's not like an entire new function was added (apps). It was just expanded to third-parties.
