Is it the same sound that used to happen when you put a cell phone near computer speakers? I kinda miss that sound.

And there's a reason for that: Because again the majority of people outside of a 1% care about 5K enough to warrant making more monitors. Which is why only LG and Apple even make the damn things

Why does Apple (and LG) making a 5K display make you angry?

For photographers and others in creative disciplines who care about image quality the difference between 5K and lessor displays is huge.

Oh really? Well, this here is the comments of an actual photographer about his thoughts on the Studio Display and 5K as a whole:

I doubt he's a real photographer. Would love to see his portfolio of his photographs.

Once more... I have a 5K iMac and a Studio Display - side by side. The difference between the two is immediately discernible with respect to image quality.

I have checked all the reviews and calibrations in person also.

The ASD does more P3 than a mid range Eizo CG series that costs over $1300 and is only 1440p. It does slightly less AdobeRGB than the Eizo.

So you are getting an excellent mid-range Eizo photography monitor but with 5K, excellent speakers, ridonkulously awesome design, full hub and power delivery, Mac native.

Any kinds of bugs can be fixed with updates and it is possible to add wireless monitor connectivity if Apple chose too. So it is possible to stream to the monitor from across the room if Apple wanted to.

There is a newer Eizo series coming out with true blacks and HDR, but very pricy at about $3000 for the 4K version and has no speakers, etc.

Curious... Are you a photographer? Maybe regularly use Lightroom or Photoshop? Have you posted any of your images on MR that I can look at?

The problem right there is the acceptance that something as benign as a monitor needs a software update.
Like I said, this is what happens when you over-think a problem which only needed a simple solution.

That's how monitors are these days, most run an OS of some kind. I remember the LG UltraFine 5K (2017) that had to have a firmware update (installed through LG Screen Manager) to fix a volume issue.

I love that they say it's the exact same thing, and then immediately they contradict themselves and say someone who disagrees with them is suffering from a placebo effect. Come on.

Oh and I'm an "actual photographer" and photo editor. So a different opinion here from someone in the same line of work as the person you quoted.

I have a 5K iMac and I have compared it to the ASD and the two have the same resolution, but the ASD is superior in several ways: backlighting, brightness, contrast, a bigger color space, and better control of image bloom and retention. I did NOT compare it to the LG 5k display as I don't have one available, but I've heard enough about the construction, the wobble, the ports that fail, etc., to know there are a host of reasons to not buy that one over the ASD.

That said I still think the ASD is more complex than I need it to be and the price is currently more than I'm willing to pay. But it's still a superior monitor and I can see it.

I don't have a buzzing issue but since the last update when I'm in Google Meet video chats I'll get an alert that there is feedback/echo from my microphone. Not sure if it's an Apple thing or a Google thing. If I drop out of the meeting and back in again it's fine.

Anyone else experiencing this??

On my Studio Display the noise disappears completely, when I turn the brightness to 100%.
When brightness is lower, the noise appears again.
I returned it and am awaiting for the replacement. Now it seems I will have to return it as well.

I don't have $6000 + $1000 for the stand to buy a Pro Display XDR, but I'm hoping that Apple's next Mac Pro reveal also comes with a more approachable pro display solution. A 30" Studio Display in the sub-$3000 ballpark would satisfy most users who don't need a Hollywood-class reference monitor. Ditch the Centre Stage camera follow feature that crops the sensor and degrades the quality.

Heck, I'd be happy with pairing my MacBookPro to a 30" iMac if they get around to releasing one. But buying another Studio Display as it is after the 6 months of anxiety and heartache it put me through, no thanks. So relieved I was able to undo that mistake.

That's a great idea if the Pro Display XDR actually was a Hollywood/Broadcast class reference monitor. Without HDMI or more specifically a SDI input, it is just another overpriced "only works" with Apple Kit monitor.

IMO, it's inadequate shielding from dirty RF line noise. My neighbor had the same problem with his ASD which replaced a third-party second display hooked to his Mac Pro. He made a 'Genius' appointment at the local Apple Store and was asked if he uses a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). Said "Yes, but only his computer was plugged into the sine wave UPS" because the Mac Pro about maxes out the UPS when running hard.

The Apple Genius suggested unplugging the Mac Pro from the UPS and running the ASD through it for a test. Problem was solved and he subsequently bought another sine wave UPS to run both monitors. Apparently, high-quality sine wave UPS units clean up the power even if it's not running on battery.

So the fix ... is for the customer to add a ~ $200 product to the $1600 monitor... Because Apple decided to save maybe $10-$20?/unit on the power supply? (and after reading further some are saying that this didn't solve the issue for them...)

Cool.

I don't have a dog in this fight one way or the other, as I don't currently own one.. This all seems so odd. This feels like the bad old days of Apple? Pre-Jobs return days? Yes, SJ had his "You're holding it wrong" and iPod Socks moments to be sure.. but.. Even the most problematic Apple devices I encountered in that period had better support and better permanent fixes than what we saw with the Butterfly KB, Studio whine, and now the on-going issues some are having with this display?

Could it be coil whine?

Maybe Apple is forced to diversify component supply from various sources due to the ongoing shortages?

Like I think for the Mac Studio, where there are like 2-3 completely different power supply makers?
If its only when a Macbook or iPad is plugged in, I'd bet its either the charging circuit or bad USB/Thunderbolt cables, which would also account for different intensity levels through the day as the devices are drawing more or less power.

It could also be the connected iDevices themselves having issues rather than the display itself.

I have a Powerbank that causes coil whine when less-than-perfect cables are used to charge it.

This has to be one of the poorest value, most lackluster Apple products in recent years.
Or, the web just amplifies the normal, small distribution of customer complaints that affect many products. The vast majority of owners are enjoying the amazing performance and build quality of the Studio Display without issues.

The design of the display is great - it’s very handsome in person. The features and functionality need serious revision.

But that will never fly not being whine-worthy!
