Again not questioning whether it can be heard, I've had one and it's silent. I just don't want the fans running 24/7 when my MacBook is sleeping and fully charged. As a work around I had to unplug the MacBook from the ASD at the end of each day to avoid the fans running from 6pm to 9am overnight unecessarily.

I wondered if this is still the case, as I had my ASD back in June.
Why would you care? The fans when the monitor is idle might use 2 cents of electricity over the course of a year. And if you can't hear them, why bother unplugging? You wouldn't know they're running either way.

I guess I don't get it.

A fan has a lifespan, running for all those hours when the mac is asleep will mean fans die sooner or develop buzzing/mechanical issues quicker. Fans run more means more dust ingress.

Does anyone unplug the ASD at the end of the day with the switch on an extension cord?
My current desk setup is fully disconnected from power in the evening. Works great and provides a fresh start every morning.

No. I mean, do as you like but I typically reboot my Macs only when there is an OS update, no need to re-start every day. besides, I work on so many different apps/files that I prefer to come back where I left things off. But to each their own.

Decided to get a second VESA Studio Display as the LG Colorprime Monitor has compatibility issues with M1 with the image not showing up on the display. So far, the endgame setup is pretty good and used the same standalone stand. Took an hour to assemble the the stand and put the monitor on it. Nice to have a second monitor that doesn’t take 5 seconds to wake up (the LG Colorprime is a monitor from 2014, which can explain everything)

Happy with the new setup, but now it costs a little more than a base Mac Pro, but it’s the end-game setup that should last for a long time given how powerful the M1 Pro is even at 1 year old.

That is of course before Samsung annouced their own 5K monitor, but I am still happy with the Studio Display. I do plan to replace the Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 dock with a Thunderbolt 4 dock that works when my work laptop gets replaced, which most likely have support for USB4/Thunderbolt. For now, I need to hook in two cables to use both displays (the first one I got is hooked up to the dock)

Could Apple add AirPlay to the ASD with a software update, or does it lack hardware capability?

I remember this question about a month ago on here and nobody gave an accurate reply. There is supposed to be a full iPad 64GB inside the monitor. If that is true it should be able to support AirPlay. Hell it should also support usb storage 😂😛

Wouldn’t it be great if that 64GB could mount on your desktop and we use it as a scratch disk?

unfortunately my unit has developed the buzz. It sounds pretty bad, especially from the back side. High frequency noise mostly around 10kHz.

I thought my tinnitus was getting worse before I realized the sound was coming from the ASD lol

This buzz thing usually coming from interference with some other devices and gadgets nearby.

If I'm understanding this picture, those are two ASD VESA on monitor desk stands.

If that's correct - what brand are those stands? I've been looking and looking for something just like that.

Also - if anyone has a suggestion for a high quality desk stand for the ASD VESA please chime in.

Not really a stand, but I really like the Ergotron HX.

You can either clamp it to the side/back of the desk, or drill through the desk for a more elegant mounting. The major advantage compared to a traditional stand (besides a much greater range of motion of course) is that the entire area below the monitors is free for keyboards, papers, iPads, coffee cups or whatever.

It can support, one, two or three VESA monitors, and comes in white, black or silver.

I have converted my two-monitor arm to wall-mounted for even less desk clutter, maybe this is also an option?

Yep, they are and this is what I have been using. Sure, it makes the Studio Display look like a generic computer monitor, but I’m not paying $400 for height adjustment

The stand itself is sturdy.

Thank you for the quick reply?

Do you like them? Are they fairly easy to height adjust? (The one I have now requires and Allen wrench any time I want to change the height or use in portrait mode.)

Thank you.

Issue for me is my desk wobbles just a slight amount. Not enough to disturb a monitor on a stand but if I use an arm I can see the monitor "vibrate" just a little when I type - unacceptable!!

FWIW - I just ordered this after chatting with Dell and confirming it is compatible with any VESA 100x100 monitor. Does all the things I want - easy height adjust, cord control, decent looking and I can now use ASD in portrait. Don't love it says "Dell" on it, but maybe that just shows I'm frugal ;). And they have a fairly easy return policy if I hate it.

I see you have already ordered a stand, so maybe this is no longer relevant, but I'll ask anyhow.

Is wall-mounting not an option? That is why I converted mine, I found the slight wobble unacceptable regardless of how the monitor was connected to the desk, arm or stand had varying degrees of the same issue.

That's an interesting suggestion and I appreciate it. The ASD is currently on a very entry level VIVO stand mount and it doesn't vibrate. I'm hopeful the Dell will work similarly but provide a lot more usable adjustability. The VIVO has to be locked in using Allen bolts so while it is adjustable it isn't practical to do so.

I'll report back on the Dell mount. If it doesn't work, the VIVO is fine.

So i have been trying to figure out what type of speakers these are. After a bit of testing with different headphones (including reference headphones like the Sennheiser HD 650), it seems that the speakers in the Apple Studio Display are basically the speaker version of the Apple AirPods Max. Which kinda makes sense.

How do you like them?

One of the things that excited me in getting the ASDs was that the reviews spoke so highly of the speakers. Frankly I find them disappointing. Also it's too bad that for multiple ASD setups that there is no way to use all of them at the same time to get a richer/louder sound (waste). I ended up adding the Kanto YU2/sub and it's much, much better. Note: I watch video daily on the ASD and if that wasn't the case would have been perfectly fine with them for occasional use.

The speakers on the ASD are very good. It's close to neutral (using the Sennheiser HD 650 as reference point), but with a bit more bass and slight reduction in highs, just like the Apple AirPods Max.

It's better this way than completely neutral as then it would sound too "thin" and most people wouldn't like that.

Folks, need some buying advice and thank you in advance for your replies.

Is now a bad time to buy a studio display? I was going to buy a refurb but all sources suggest that there might be a Display refresh or new display in March, 2023.

I don't need a monitor right now so am not in a rush. But i do want one eventually and don't want to be in the situation where I've bought the studio display and a new one comes out in 2 months.
