For someone that is quite picky about their screens, could someone please comment regarding the white uniformity of their screen? Thank you.

FWIW - I am no expert by any means, but it looks really consistent to me. I can't imagine someone being unhappy about the picture quality on the ASD. The price and other stuff, sure. But the display and build quality are exceptional.

Based on the Eizo tests that I did, it passed everything no problem except for some ghosting. But that is not unexpected as it is not a gaming monitor with 0.1ms latency and 144hz+ refresh rate.

So I'd say you should be fine. But I suppose the Pro XDR could be better suited for you if you care that much about excellent white uniformity as the ASD is not Apple their best offering.

Boy was I wrong...
Well there's a sentence you don't see on the internet every day.

I agree with all your points and would call out the auto-adjusting rotation specially. It's a nice touch. (Maybe all monitors do that but the ASD doesn't force you to look at a sideways logo in portrait mode.)

My feeling is that if I'm going to be in front of them for several hours a day, I may as well really like what I'm looking at.
Exactly. Nothing good comes from skimping on monitors (or keyboards).

Not meaning to double post but I’m having a problem. I just bought a ASD yesterday but the thunderbolt cable is too short to reach my MacPro. Other cables I’ve used don’t work. The supplied one works for my MacBookPro. Is there a trick to this? Is the supplied one the only one that works? Is there a setting I have to make in my Mac that I can’t make because I don’t have a display? Have any veteran ASD users seen this issue?

The supplied cable was also too short for me, so I bought the extra long "Pro" TB4 from Apple and it works perfect. It is an expensive cable, but at least you are guaranteed it will work as intended.

Thanks. It is very frustrating. I need to use it today. I’ll wait for the Apple Store or Best Buy to open. Why or why does apple do this??

3 metres long Thunderbolt 4 cables are not that common. They are expensive to make, especially with the high standards Apple makes them.

So Apple sell them as an option for people who need it.

I just came back from The Apple Store and spent $140 on the longest cable they had. 1.8 meters. Not long enough. I could probably do with a 2 m. Longer would be preferable in case I have to pull the Mac out for troubleshooting. This is a recording studio so periodically I do. This is a 4k cable. I suppose I can use a less than 4k or is this the trouble I’m running into?

Don't get the 1.8 meter one, that is the stock Thunderbolt 4 cable that comes with the Apple Studio Display. They also have a 3 meter Thunderbolt 4 cable.

It is this one:

This is the one I’m picking up now. BYW the one that came with the ASD was the 1m, not this 1.8.

I just measured the stock cable from the ASD and you are right, it is only 0.8m.

I use the 3 meter version also for music production with the ASD + 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro and 100W charging + audio + video works flawless over this single cable, so I'm positive this 3 meter cable will solve all your problems.

I use the above for my ASDs connect to Studio base model. Two on those cables and one on the ridiculously short one they sent w/ the displays.

Success. I must say I was very attached to my curved Samsung. But it was dying. If the power went off or if I turned off overnight it took 45 minutes to get the picture. Lines and distortion. It was a bigger screen too. I will survive. The ASD is beautiful though. I got the ridiculously too expensive stand as well. Thanks all.

After all of that this isn’t the display I wanted. I want the more expensive Pro XDR. I thought this was that. Damn.

As a FYI, the Pro XDR doesn't come with a stand so don't forget to pick that one up too when buying it.

I’m hoping the stand, the 1k stand, is just the adjustable stand? Trying not for another big miss! Lol. I THINK it has a non adjustable stand. ?? I ordered it sans 1k stand. Since it’s just on the table and I’m sitting in figuring I don’t need it.

Now after all the rigamarole over the 4k 3m thunderbolt I need to know whether this will work with the Pro XDR? I think it’s listed as thunderbolt 6k?? So a 3m 6k cable will probably cost me $400! Lol.

This happens with me in the heat of purchasing when I need it now. Sheesh. I remembered when the 2019 Mac Pro was released I was one of the first in line. And I thought it was incredibly expensive and the stand was ridiculous. But I thought they went together. So I went to the Apple Store and selected my MacPro and display. I thought it was expensive-ish but cheaper than I thought. Price came down? Lol.

It has no stand if all you bought is the display.

You basically have to buy the Pro Stand or the VESA adapter.

???

Everything you need to know is right there on the product comparison page:

If it says "option" it is something you can choose. If there are only alternatives labeled "option" it means there is no default included, and you must choose an option unless you want nothing. (And you need something unless you want to prop the display against a wall, since as far as I can tell there are no third-party magnetic VESA interfaces for the XDR.)

That said, I do think Apple could do a better job explaining the implications if you say "no, thanks" to both the stand and the VESA adapter.

I am glad the Studio Display seems to have actually launched the 5K monitor market. As of yet, the current new models from other companies do not seem to hold a candle to the SD, but competition is always a good thing.

Dimming uniformity is not the best feature of XDR. I would say it's one of disappointing things of it.
