Do any of you use the display as a developer? What is your long-term experience? Does the display make that much sense? Is it that much better than a 4K device for programming and text?

Just received my 2 Studio Displays from Amazon for 1299 each and I couldn't be happier.

Yes all day every day. I had a 4k Iiyama before and that was slightly blurry on text rendering due to 150% scaling. Eye strain is gone now.

I'd take a 1440p or a 5k display only for programming. 4k is not right at all.

Yes but coming from a 27" iMac I never thought "this is what I need as a developer". I do really like it though.

The video clip certainly was more helpful than a screenshot in understanding what you're experiencing, clearly not an application window refresh anomaly/bug as I'd been suspecting! Sounds like Apple (or other retailer) is sending you out a new unit?!
I had a refurbished Display and am sending it back this week for a full refund. I ordered a new one. I didn’t want to spend time repairing a “new screen”.

Anyone had experience of a crack in the glass of ASD appearing spontaneously, despite not knocking or banging the screen?

Purchased the standard tilt + height model 2 months ago, but discovered this small mark today as shown in images on the edge of the glass (the crack is behind the glass as it feels completely smooth to touch)

If I’ve not knocked this, what could cause it? I wondered if an imperfection could have been aggravated by cold temperatures?

I do not have Apple Care so need some advice. I also use the item daily for work and don't like the idea of being without it for inspection/repair for 1-2 weeks even if this were to be covered in warranty.

Both Apple and also John Lewis (retailer I bought from in UK) state I have two options;
- Bring into a local Apple or JL store to be inspected by a technician (Though I am concerned that this is very hard to do as I live in London and the item is heavy and fragile. I don’t want to risk further damage Transporting it just to then be told ‘no’). They will assess in store if eligible for repair under warranty, though I suspect this is unlikely.

- Or, ship to a service centre for Apple or John Lewis with one of their couriers, to then be inspected there.

If the inspection concludes that this is accidental damage then I will not be covered for this item :(

I am sure that I have not physically damaged it myself. I don’t recall knocking the screen, especially not ever with any force anywhere near to cause any crack.

Any advice is welcome! This is the most I’ve spent on an Apple product so I’m gutted to have this imperfection on it, particularly as it seems there will be no resolution available.

I have a hard time believing cold could do that unless it was REALLY cold. FWIW - That crack looks a lot like one I had on an XDR I purchased used (and returned). The seller also claimed they were unaware and had never knocked it. Not that this probably matters but I had the XDR for a few weeks (long story) and never noticed the damage impacting the performance of the monitor. I wonder if the glass on these monitors have weak spots that are hyper sensitive to any (even extremely minor) impacts.

Just a few thoughts returning items to Apple vs the retailer where you made the purchase...

When I purchased a BNIB 12.9 IPP from B&H that arrived DOA they were no fuss in providing a factory sealed BNIB replacement unit, contrast that with my sweetie's BNIB 11" IPP purchased directly from Apple that developed screen issues within the first two weeks of usage...that required a 50-mile round-tip drive to Danbury Apple Store where they claimed "drop damage" (which never happened! LOL) and then said they would provide us with a factory refurb which would take a week to arrive in store and required another 50-mile round trip drive to pick up.

Lesson learned, I avoid purchasing direct from Apple now except where I need a custom configuration (ala my M1 MAX MBP).

I can't speak to John Lewis retailer, but if their store policies are better than Apple's and if your consumer laws are like NY's, returns within the specified time period should go more to your satisfaction? Keep us posted!

I'm with you. My experiences with Apple recently haven't been nearly as good as either BBY or AMZN.

Do you put your laptop to the left side of the monitor? Maybe the laptop hit the screen one day while being picked up or put down? I could see a metal laptop cause damage like that even if the impact was pretty light.

Update. Today FedX picked up the refurbished Apple Studio Display I’m returning.

My new ASD arrived today, except it didn’t, then it did. I received a delivery confirmation from DHL (told them where to leave it), but the Display wasn’t there. Called DHL and Apple, both got on the case immediately.

Eventually, DHL said the delivery person had left it at the place with a construction site. Which wasn’t my house.

As I wasn’t home, my wife walked around the neighborhood, and eventually discovered the display sandwiched between the back of a trailer and a shed: at a house on a neighboring street (with a different street name) but with the same house number as mine. 🙄

I’ll be able to check out the quality of the display on Thursday, but my Mac mini is still stuck in the Chinese New Year shipping jam.

I've been working in a few different offices this last week which has meant using a variety of different displays. I'll never take the Apple Studio Display for granted again!

Don't underestimate how easy the built-in webcam and speakers make daily conference calls. It doesn't matter if you're in macOS or using a VM - it all just works. No faffing around with audio inputs or webcam settings. No hassles with audio sources because you're using external speakers or headphones or a combo with a mic. And no worries about feedback from the speakers because the mic is picking them up.

One of the biggest cons seems to be the Logitech "4K" webcam which seems to offer slightly better video quality than the ASD webcam but not by much.

Are you sure it’s a crack? From the pictures it is a bit hard to tell, but to me it almost looks like the black back paint coming off. I.e. a manufacturing defect.

I just received my ASD and wanted to chime in. After reading the forums and the reviews I was afraid of what I was going to get. This replaces my previous Dell 4K P2715Q and I am truly impressed. I wanted to just have it in the interim while the new XDR comes out, but after seeing it now, I think I will keep it. The image is sharp and the colors are vibrant. It plays beautifully with the M2 MacBook Pro, wakes up from sleep immediately and the brightness is more than enough. I dowloaded the latest software update and the image on the built in camera is perfect for any Zoom call. The sale price I got it for was $1,300, but after seeing it I would have happily paid the original $1,600. I only wish I would have bought it when it came out..

How did you download the latest update? I just got mine and haven't checked if they have newest software

It will auto-update as part of the normal macOS update process. You don't need to do anything. If there is an update, you'll get the notification via System Settings.

Just got my ASD from Costco today. So far, absolutely perfect. Tomorrow, I am geting the Mac Mini M2 Pro delivered and excited to hook it up. This will replace my 2012 27 iMac, which has been awesome. The ASD seems larger than the 27 iMac, but I think it is the perception of the smaller bezels and how thin it is too.

Really cool, how I can plug my iPad 12.9 Pro in it and use that as a secondary display and charge the iPad at the same time. Just like everything Apple, it just works.

Great job Apple!

I got the ASD at Costco also and need to order my M2 Pro Mac Mini to go with it. What spec did you get on your Mini?
