Interestingly, in the EU (240V) the power draw figures are different:
21.2W for SDR power draw, and 0.5W for standby.

Yes, depending where you look it up there may be some small difference. But it doesn't matter if 0,3 or 0,5

Here is what Apple is telling the user:

• Standby (Sleep): Low power state that is entered after the display receives instructions from a connected host

computer set to off/sleep. This mode is characterized by a blank screen.

Edit: Also I can confirm my ASD is using 21,5 Watt right now while posting this. EU

Yes, this is also my observation...
So far, the ASD fans do not run when my Macbook is shut off.

Yesterday, I did shut down my Macbook and left it shutdown until the evening next day.
After booting, the display went on and the fans began to run (ok, normal).
Btw, the battery charge of my Macbook did not change; so it might be that the Macbook was still powered via the thudnerbolt cable despite the ASD was off.

Thanks for your input. It would be important to let us know what kind of setup you are using,, including the OS,

If you have the fans of the ASD going on and off during Mac and ASD are in sleep mode this would be the behavior with a Mac mini (not sure about a Macbook) before macOS 15.4

The ASD fans jump in during the Mac is doing some background tasks, that’s a couple of times and minutes per hour, sometimes longer, sometimes short. But the fans should stop after the background work is done.

How do I know that? Right from the start using my ASD with my Mac mini I’m using two smart plugs, able to tell me the power draw in an app. So I can see if the Mac mini is using a little more power while switching from sleep to background task back and forth.

I’m using 2021 14” MBP. An RME audio interface is connected through a USB port on the ASD. The interface retains bus power from the ASD when the MacBook is undocked, and the display fans are currently not running.

I wonder how much ambient temperature is a factor? It’s starting to get pretty cold here!

... did I get this right? You are using the display (it's on), but the ASD fans are NOT running?
It's complicated to compare Mac mini and MacBook to figure out the bug I'm talking about. What would be important is, if ASD fans keep running or not during an over night sleep mode.

@macOScurious the fans have always been on while using the computer, at least as far as I've ever noticed. Upon unplugging the Mac the fans usually stop. Sometimes the fans will stop while the MacBook sleeps, but this is rare. I wish they reliably went off during sleep; feels like a waste of energy / fan lifespan.

If MacBook Pro Display is dead and connect asd , I’m thinking that “ do you trust” prompt is preventing a picture to display . I press command and f1 and nothing. How do I get the asd to turn on in other ways?

No idea what you are on about
OK, I'll try.
Not hearing the ASD fans is perfect, it proofs good engineering. But not hearing them doesn’t mean they don’t run while your Mac and Studio Display is in sleep mode. There is no reason for the fans to run all the time while you are not using the devices,, except for the short minutes the Mac doing some work in the background.

If you want to understand the issue, here is a short thread that should give you all the information.

I can hear the fans in a very quiet room, within a couple feet. They are super quiet, but audible.

I have three that I'm sitting in front of. Can't hear them at all. Also can't hear the fan on the Mac Studio M4 Max, either. Or if they do actually make noise, it's not audible above the background noise in my house.

I don't have a studio display but I do have an m4 max studio too, and I wanted to chime in that I ALSO cannot hear the fans on it. It's super duper quiet! I can feel a little bit of air coming off the back.

Is it weird when your ASD starts powering everything attached to it like your macbook? Sometimes I forget to reattach the power cable for macbook and the studio display powers it....

You mean like you have other USB devices plugged into it and they still get power without a computer connected?

Most other monitors have a power button and obvious on/off states regardless of whether they're connected to a source. The USB ports on those are usually powered on if the power is "on", even if the screen isn't receiving a signal.

Because of that, It makes sense to me that the studio display would send power even if it wasn't receiving a video signal from a computer.

Which is good if you want to charge your iPhone or other things. Don't mind power going to the monitor for that, but the fans are always on (though I cannot hear them). I just unplugged my MacBook Pro to see if the fans are still on wth nothing attached and they are. It is barely noticeable, but they are on with just a little air coming out of the vents. Not sure why....but hope the monitor lasts a long time.

I really like the monitor.

Got my monitor back. Fan on loud non-stop. Anyone get it serviced due to this? Anyone try the Apple service utility to diagnose? I am trying right now. This display sounds like im boiling water..... Says to go to "apple diagnostics for self service repair webpage"
