I changed my desk arrangement around meaning my Caldigit cable wouldn't reach my Mac Studio so had to buy one of the 3m cables from Apple. Lovely and braided... but how much!? Just glad I can put it through as a company expense...

Bought a 2m Caldigit and it isn’t long enough. Do the 3m ones have larger/thicker connectors than the default thunderbolt cable that shipped with the ASD?

I ordered an ASD in the refurb store for next week to test against my Samsung UJ59 32 inch, which looks better than I'd have expected with my sporty new MBP14, but want to run A/B tests with the UJ just to be sure. The ASD will need to be a leap ahead of the 4K Samsung to justify its cost premium of over 400%, but suspect it will.

I asked in another thread if the iMac 27" 5K Retina can be used as a monitor but knowing apple, suspect it cannot. Would have kept that computer for the screen alone.

I already have the Belkin laptop adapter. The lip on the laptop one isn't wide enough to hook on to the Studio Display. At some point I guess they'll sell one for Apple Displays and desktop monitors.

Yes, this isn't meant to work on the monitor!

If I remember correctly, the demo did show a separate black adapter paired with the ASD

Is the adjustable stand worth it? I see it on the refurb site and while still expensive, is much more reasonable than new.

I have an iMac now and wish I could adjust the screen height sometimes (although it hasn’t been a deal breaker).

Sitting at my desk, I have the standard tilt model, and I wouldn’t mind it being an inch shorter. If the adjustable stand’s lowest height is where the standard is, then the adjustable would have been a waste of money for me. Of course, your setup needs may find the price difference worth it.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking the refurbished isn’t too bad so might be worth it. I would likely want it a little higher than out if the box or put it up and have laptop underneath (not sure how much I would like that but I have seen some videos and it looks like an interesting setup).

I have the other half of my desk taken up by work computer and monitor so I either need to do clambshell mode on a MacBook or get the adjustable stand and have the option to use both screens when I need it.

I have my MacBook Pro and work laptop in a dual vertical stand at the back of my desk behind Studio Display.
The work monitor is on a VESA mount so I can swing it out of the way at the end of the work day.
That setup gives me a bit more space to work.

That sounds like a great set up. My desk is wood so not sure what sort of VESA mount would work.

I would also like to switch to a standing desk at some point.

Does the ASD require a Thunderbolt 4 cable? I have an old 0.8m Thunderbolt 3 cable laying around, and decided to test it to see if it would work, as it's always nice to have a spare, and it didn't. Nothing appeared on screen and the USB stuff plugged into the ASD did not power up.

I'm wondering if this is expected behavior, or if my old TB3 cable is defective somehow. TB3 should support 40gbps so it should be enough, theoretically? I expected it to at least do SOMETHING, even if at a lower resolution.
The ASD is a Thunderbolt 3 device so a TB3 cable should work.

My desk top is wooden, my VESA mount is on a clamp which works well.
I also have a Webcam and mic on goose neck mounts clamped to desk.
I guess if damaging desk was a concern you could use something to sandwich desk, maybe rubber or felt pads.

There are lots of options, you can clamp to the desk, use a desk stand, drill a hole for “permanent” mounting or wall mount.

I would also like to switch to a standing desk at some point.

Pretty much all these options work with an adjustable desk.

Mine are wall-mounted, and although I’d prefer a little more vertical range (about five more centimeters would have been nice) it is still perfectly fine, just a little low in standing position.

Awesome keyboard!

I have a question for you ASD owners:

I cannot find reliable information online concerning the refresh rates on a M1 Max, sometimes I read that there is only 60hz available which would be a problem for me as I need 24 hz (48hz) and 25 hz (50 hz) options. Could somebody please check the available resolutions and refresh rates for me in displays settings? Thank you!

This from the apple web site should be reliable:

Change the refresh rate on your MacBook Pro or Apple Pro Display XDR

You can switch between refresh rates on your 16-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, or Pro Display XDR.

For professional workflows such as video editing, you can set the refresh rate of your display to align with the frame rate of the video you're editing or viewing.

Available refresh rates

You can switch between these refresh rates on your Retina display:
  • 60 Hertz
  • 59.94 Hertz
  • 50 Hertz
  • 48 Hertz
  • 47.95 Hertz
On 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon, you can select ProMotion for an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz.

Change the refresh rate

Choose a refresh rate that divides evenly into the frame rate of your content. For example, if the content you’re viewing is 24 frames per second, select the 48 Hertz refresh rate.

Thank you, I know that for the MBP M1 Pro/Max and Apple Pro Display XDR but I was asking for the 27" APPLE STUDIO DISPLAY :)

How do I check? I have an ASD on a Studio Max
Go to:

1. System Preferences
2. Displays
3. There, on the right you should see the Refresh rate and a possibility to change it (see screenshot)
Eventually you have to make an option-click on "Scaled" in order to see the different resolutions / refresh rates...

Thank you!

Sorry. No refresh rates show up even when option clicking. The only thing option clicking gives me is the different resolutions I can change to.
