Well that's the case with any standalone display unless you are spending well into four-figures for a Pro Display XDR or an OLED or MiniLED "professional/gaming" 4K display.

And I expect most of those using their MBPs with a standalone display are either operating in clamshell mode or using the MBP's display as a secondary display.
Just hope Apple gets price right for upcoming 27” Display.

It amazes me how reviewers are complaining about a web camera software bug and headline the article "A confounding miss". We knew this was an IPS display, we knew it didn't have 120hz or LED dimming zones. So reviewing it, you have to say this is a 5k, 600nits, 1 Billion Color Display with an industry leading industrial design, six speaker audio system that supports spatial audio, 12mp webcam and 3 mic array and review it based on that.

Does it have an Apple Tax, well yes...should have been priced around $1299 instead of $1699.

But its a 27" Apple Display that is 1/3 the cost of the Pro XDR Display. It is Apple's Consumer Level display.

Look at it as an upgradable 27' iMac. Bring your own computer, keyboard and mouse.

I purchased one and can't wait to put it on my desk, there is nothing like an Apple Display, its double the nits than most monitors on the market and the image quality and clarity is always top notch!

Gruber’s review. He too complains about the camera and is skeptical software alone will fix it. Still says he’s going to buy one.

Flaws..overpriced…
Still buying one for sure!

One wonders if there’s anything Apple could do to get some of its devout fans to not buy something.

Except in this case the “BMW and Nissan have the same engine”…I could agree if the proper stand was not an extra 400$ On top.
To be fair, a car is not just an engine. The BMW is materially nicer to drive even if all other performance metrics are equivalent with the Nissan. Toyota has made a killing off withhold a decent interior and better exterior styling for their Lexus lineup. I’d rather be driving an RX350 than a Rav4.

Same with Rene Ritchie. I feel Dave2D is the best of the “reviewers”.

All of them can be bought. Did you see his (now around 2 year old) video where he threw dust all over his very neat livingroom just to use this Dyson vacuum to clean it all up again?

I can remember defending the "Apple tax" back when the products they released had the quality to back up the sometimes outrageously overpriced hardware. I think those days have passed, I think Apple is just getting more and more greedy with the Mac.
My 14” MacBook was around $2,000 and I am extremely happy with it. Incredible display, speakers, performance etc. I think just some parts of their lineup are better than others.

Just a reminder that a much superior 120Hz HDR OLED with VRR is available for less. 42” LG C2.

Throw on a superior $100 webcam and you still save money.
Perhaps a stupid concern but I’ve seen some gamers complain about burn-in/ghosting caused by HUDs on a game they play frequently. I would worry that OLED panels conditioned for TV usage may not be ideal for use cases where UI elements are static on the screen for extended periods.

There’s definitely that issue but after seeing RTings long term OLED burn in test I’m not concerned. Also I would personally buy it with a long term warranty that covers burn in.

OLED is so superior in actually usage it’s worth the trade off. My only device that isn’t OLED is my 14” MacBook Pro which honestly has the best LCD display I’ve ever used.

I am pretty disappointed by the studio display and the whole situation Apple forces us to be in with their retina obsession / no proper font smoothing for low ppi displays).

If you are someone who notices the improvement of pixel perfect scaling and want proper screen real estate, to have only the option to buy an problematic LG ultrafine, an studio display with outdated display tech that has no height adjustable stand for 1500 Bucks and the XDR is ridiculous. Then also considering buying two of these Studio Displays (which for many people feel like a necessity for their workflow) + height adjustment stands or even just VESA, the pricing is way too high.

I am slowly thinking about switching to either Linux or Windows just to have better support for low ppi displays, especially ultrawides, as Apple does not really care about that.

What is this talk of “Apple 4k scaling is bad” or “5k is the only acceptable resolution at 27””?

In our studio we have an assortment of 5k iMacs, 4k at 27”, 4k at 28”, while it is true that the 5k iMac is set at 2560x1440 the perfect 200% UI scaling will make everything sharper, but it is only a hair bit more. At typical desk distance of 2-3 feet the 4k pixel pitch is high enough that the anti-aliasing of the GUI is quite adequate.

It is not like the 1440p at 27” which is like the older 2017 MBA tier of blurriness.

The point is that while 5k 27” is somewhat exclusive, it really doesn’t add that much to the experience over 4k, and it should have the same asking price like when it was new in 2015 or so.

Um, I don't think so.

Same with Rene Ritchie. I feel Dave2D is the best of the “reviewers”.

Pains me a bit to admit that about Rene, because he's really good at concisely covering a large amount of detail and he seems a legitimate enthusiast.

That said... I watched his review of the Mac Studio back to back with the Verge's review and found the Verge's review to be more well rounded in giving positives and negatives. Nilay at the Verge savaged the display.

edit: Thought I'd mention that MKBHB and Linus will both happily **** all over anything, as will Mr.Mobile. There are plenty of reviewers who do not seem to concern themselves with what Apple PR might think.

I would like to repeat that too many people are quoting more price friendly comps to the Apple Studio Display that are not comps at all.

Anything that is not 5K native resolution (5120 x 2880), is not a comp. The only comp to the Apple Studio Display is the LG UltraFine 5K. That’s it. It is a worse product in most respects save price tag.

Whatever “comps” getting mentioned may have some features you prefer to the Studio Display but there are different kinds of users out there. If you want great color coverage on a screen that can do pixel doubled ”retina” 1440p, your only options are the LG UltraFine 5K and Apple Studio Display.

And despite the price tag and similar panel, LG’s offering ain’t all roses. Plenty of LG UltraFine 5K owners have complained about flaky USB-C performance among other issues. In fact, LG’s product has had several engineering flaws I remember reading about over the years. Precisely why people were asking for Apple to just take an iMac 5K and make it just a display was because the LG UltraFine 5K was not an altogether great product. This seems to have gotten brainhole‘d by a certain demographic.

BMW is an over engineered German POS LOLOLOLOL

I ignored all the features you pointed out that I directly responded to? Weird.

I said no other monitor has good speakers and a webcam. The MateView does not have a webcam. But you did seem to find one that is not plastic and ugly, though I think it's pretty clear that my "every" there was hyperbolic.

And another big differentiator with the Studio that I forgot to mention—you can bring it to an actual person to get it serviced instead of mailing it to god knows where and crossing your fingers. And in the case of Huawei, you can neither purchase it in the US nor get it serviced here.
Well, thankfully I'm not in the US. Not everyone lives in a US-centric world.

Um, I don't think so.

Here's what I want them to to do. Studio Display doesn't seem to match up to the panel in the 24" iMac. Take the 24" iMac panel, slap it in a body like the Studio Display (but no speakers or cam even needed), WITH height adjustment, and sell me two of them for $1600.

That camera looks pretty damn good to me @7.40 ... is it a Facecam? No, but it's built into a chassis less than an inch thick, has a smaller lens, and it's still better than virtually all other webcams out there.

I'm kind of surprised, but not really, that they did not offer a matching display for the iMac. It would be the ideal machine for many (myself included).

I guess they figure if you are in the market for dual/triple screens you will be going for the Studio or Mini rather than an AIO.
