It's basically a 27" imac monitor in different clothes. I honestly wasn't expecting any more, and it's suits the job for a 5k requirement for now. albeit overpriced, but so was the LG 5k.
Like you I was seriously considering it. The reason I did not buy wasn't much for the specs or price but because it was small for me. I have two 30" ACD and I need one high spec to be my main monitor matching the Apple design and put the ACD on each side as secondary panel for palettes, UI, internet, email, etc.Serious question: Can anyone recommend alternatives to these? I decided to get two because I needed: 5k, colour accuracy, webcam, speakers, and something actually beautiful to fit into my space. I looked around and found nothing that could come close... the LG 5k monitors that apple previously sold were decent (althought the Studio Displays have vastly better looking enclosures) but they were only a few hundred less so I'd rather pay the difference to have something nicer. Anyone?
Its not just the display but a good quality speakers, good quality microphone, good quality webcam, a USB C Hub at the back. Considering all that price is still way too high. It’s not. This is a easy pass.
Didn't the read the reviews? Unless they fix it in software, the webcam is a disaster. Its not just the display but a good quality speakers, good quality microphone, good quality webcam, a USB C Hub at the back. Considering all that price is still way too high.
The vast majority of users could not afford nor want this period. Let's not kid ourselves.I don't know. I think if this display had half the features people want it would start to push $2K and then people would be complaining about that. Can't win.
Fact is, aside from that plasticky Ultrafine display, a 5K display was near impossible to find. Now Apple has built one that's not plastic and seems pretty solid, at a few hundred bucks more than the LG. I guess it's a weird choice to lock in the cable and the stand, but is anyone actually surprised? I think the vast majority of users (ie, not armchair industrial designers on web forums) will probably just plop this on their desk, enjoy a nice bright retina 5K display, and move on with their lives.
Well, I guess you settle for fine. I don’t.I’m writing this on a 28 inch 4K display, scaled, and it’s fine. And I didn’t spend over $500 for it. I’d rather put that money into a better machine than the monitor. I think a lot of people will feel the same. But keep speaking for “most Mac users”. I don’t think “most Mac users” are all that different from anyone else: they want the biggest bang for the buck. This monitor ain’t it, IMO.
Take a look at the Huawei MateView. 28.2 inches. 4K. HDR. 4:3 ratio. Aluminium design that looks a lot like Apple's Studio Display. Wi-Fi. USB-C and USB-A ports. Speakers. Touch-sensitive control bar. Height adjustable. Scales just fine automatically with a Mac mini.A 27” 4K monitor has significantly lower resolution than the Studio and will not scale macOS properly. Most other monitors have less brightness. Few other monitors include USB-C ports, let alone a Thunderbolt port that provides 96W of power. Few other monitors include good speakers and a webcam (actually I think no other monitor does). Every other monitor is plastic and ugly.
Patel noted that the "$300 nanotexture option smudges easily and is hard to clean,"
The stands lacking interchangeability is a big miss, it’s not like Apple doesnt have experience with having changeable hardware there so, seriously, why?
The vast majority of users are using mediocre 1080p displays. And they are fine with it.The resolution is the defining feature of a display. “Most important” is obviously subjective, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that resolution is more important to more people than color accuracy.
Exactly. This is really forgotten by tech nerds. Most “normies” are still on 1080p and don’t think twice about it. I use a 1080p monitor as a second monitor and it’s plenty good enough For my software development work. The vast majority of users are using mediocre 1080p displays. And they are fine with it.
Oh noes, you mean if you touch it with oily hands it will smudge?
Can you list some? Seriously I tried to find alternatives that are 5k, colour accurate with webcam, speakers, and look nice. Would rather but something better. People keep saying better options but don't list anything that's comparable.Like I said a week ago, for the price point, it should've included features like Pro Motion or mini-LED or a lower price. There are so many better options at this point.
After using my phone with 120 Hz I cant go back to 60 Hz.$1599 for a non HDR or ProMotion display is a sin.
The reality is, though, that it IS top of the line in this price range. One must compromise on resolution, image quality, brightness or SOMETHING in order to find anything else close. There’s a reason why the serious monitor vendors don’t have anything in this range, no one would want to buy it for the price they’d have to charge for it. (And that’s even considering that they would charge less than Apple does)Brand new hardware launch, and it is years behind the rest of the product line. No Pro-Motion, no HDR, seems like Apple really did get greedy with this one. You really should be able to expect top of the line for this price range on a monitor. Interesting play by Apple...
There aren’t any, the folks saying “I can find better” consider search engines too hard to use! OR, they actually do the search and don’t find anything but will NOT let that get in the way of them getting a good “mad” on.Can you list some? Seriously I tried to find alternatives that are 5k, colour accurate with webcam, speakers, and look nice. Would rather but something better. People keep saying better options but don't list anything that's comparable.
