If you are happy with a $500 LG, Dell, Asus etc etc thats all fine and good. What I don’t get is why so many have an issue with a display they don’t care about. Why waste so much time and energy complaining about a product you aren’t going to purchase in the first place? And if paying just $1600 for a display is life altering for you then of course you have no other choice but to settle for a cheaper one.

Apple conned everyone the display is old tech it’s mega over priced for what it is, get the Mateview it’s so cheap and better
I ordered an Apple Studio Display for my home office - I knew it was overpriced, but after these reviews it felt even more over priced - I looked at your recommendation and the Mateview looks almost perfect, the build quality looks good - I can't say i'm 100% sold on the aspect ratio, but can see benefits in many ways (not much black bar when connecting iPads, more of the web visible, more room for coding, even things like managing CMS's would be easier with more vertical screen space). It doesn't look as nice but it's certainly not ugly and good looking enough for my desk.

The webcam omission is a downside but as Apple's one appears to be rubbish I can use my mac or iPad for video conferencing which I do now anyway.

It's also annoying that the pass through USBC is on the side so you'll see some cable there which detracts from the beauty.

But on the whole it looks like a solid screen - and with a voucher and the cash back option I can get the Mateview for £349, the Apple Studio monitor I can get on discount for £1,348.80 - so the Apple monitor is almost exactly £1000 more - is it worth it? I can't see that it is! the Mateview is also height adjustable - Apple charges more than this whole monitor price for just the height adjusting feature (which I didn't include on my order due to the outrageous price increase).

After reflecting I cancelled my order and have ordered the Mateview so thank you very much! It should arrive sooner than the Apple Stuido would have too!

Yup. My hope is that now that the 27" iMac is gone, other companies will be introducing 5K monitors to fill the gap.
Seeing as how the computing industry as a whole isn’t interested in 5k monitors such that the ONLY folks looking for one would be one of the members of the <10% marketshare Mac users, no companies are likely to be raring to fill such a small gap.

A lot of early adopters who 'sold out' initial supply will be pissed off. I'll keep my 4k 144 Hz or 1440p 165 Hz... and a $80 Logitech C930e.

And what was the point of putting an A13 in the monitor... if it doesn't have Apple TV functionality, or airplay, or whatever. $1600 for 60 Hz and subpar webcam???
This is the real tragedy with this display. The fact that with this A13 chip, nice speakers, etc, that there is no wireless airplay is a joke and a huge failure.

Why waste so much time and energy complaining about a product you aren’t going to purchase in the first place?

Because they had hopes for Apple to deliver a product more in line with their expectations. Apple didn't deliver some key features they wanted which turned a likely purchase in a disappointed "pass" for them.

I at least was somewhat surprised when the specs of the Studio Display were presented and it had no HDR and no ProMotion. I was obviously not expecting the same quality as an XDR display at that price point, but surely at least HDR-600.

I think it makes sense to "complain", since it might be that Apple underestimated how much consumers value those features and might take the feedback into account in future product decisions. How successful the monitor will sell compared to Apple's own expectations will also definitely play a role in this.

iJustine is so far up the Apple PR machines ass... Can't even trust a single thing she says now. Some of the footage on her screen from her over-the-shoulder shot looks like it was added in post too?
They had to add it in post. She was actually filming from up inside the ass of a member of Apple’s PR staff.

iJustine gets clicks because guys have a one track mind.

Well, I think the camera is actually good. Have a look here:
(around minute 8)
there is also a 500MB update available for the Studio display. Dave2D showed that in his video. I don’t know what The Verge showed, but in the video above everything looks ok.

apple needs to face facts and realize 4k is the de facto high resolution standard for tvs, desktops and laptops and start properly supporting it or they are going to be left behind in the face of the new wave of oled, qd-oled and micro led panels coming from lg and samsung. there will be affordable 4k variants available long before it's worth anyone developing a 5k variant
Being left behind isn’t anything new for Apple, they got left behind a LOOOONG time ago (<10% marketshare). :) Same as it ever was!

The stands lacking interchangeability is a big miss, it’s not like Apple doesnt have experience with having changeable hardware there so, seriously, why?
I thought you can get these changed at an Apple Store?

Presumably the camera is the exact same one as in other devices, so image quality must be down to software which will get fixed?

MR has highlighted two reviews which praise the speakers. The Six Colors one is disappointed by the speakers. Reviews are subjective, we all have to remember that.

There's lots of options out there at different price points with different features, this is just another one of those options which has pros & cons when compared with others.

It’s because the monitor is a head scratcher in the Apple tradition of the Mac Pro garbage can. It‘s a strange beast that doesn’t seem to satisfy anyone with a specific use case, and it’s too expensive for casual computer users. It also seems behind the curve on some of the popular specs of today: it’s too small, it doesn’t include HDR, it’s only 60hz, etc. Apple doesn’t exist in a bubble for most people and there are a lot of monitor options with the specs that people expect in a modern monitor at a much more reasonable price. It just seems like a strange product, especially since Apple‘s Mac Studio seems like a home run.

Do you have a link to a $400 5K display with great color accuracy? Or even one that is 4K and will at least output 600 nits? I'm asking because I'm interested in one but need to keep it as far under $1000 as possible. I'm looking at adding another 4k or 5k display but haven't found a non-gaming one (I need good color accuracy) for anywhere near that price. I have an LG UK850-W (purchased for about $300 before all the supply chain issues) but it's only 350nits (but "HDR", which isn't really accurate).

There's this Dell Ultrasharp I'm looking at (https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/sho...3qe/apd/210-bdpf/monitors-monitor-accessories) but it's currently over $600 and isn't nearly as bright as the Apple Studio display (400 nits). I'd get another LG like mine but they are currently >$500 and not quite as bright as I need. Any other suggestions?
There is nothing wrong with the LG UltraFine 4K display.

I am pretty worried about the camera quality..To be honest, I am thinking of canceling my order and just keep my 24" iMac. It's just too much money and I expect top quality. Maybe Apple can solve the quality issue with a software update.
I cancelled mine :)

I kind of like the Studio Display. It doesn’t need ProMotion to be a great display, though ProMotion would be sweet. The stand looks great and it’s nice that it is aluminum instead of the plastic many stands are made out of, but it should have some sort of height adjustment for the price (even if it’s not to the same level as the Pro displays) and the camera needs fixed. Hopefully the software fix they are working on will do the trick. All-in-all it’s a pretty decent display, but then again, they missed the mark to be a truly exceptional display. If the price was $12,999 then it “might” fit that bill, but at $15,999, it’s missing the mark.

The stands lacking interchangeability is a big miss, it’s not like Apple doesnt have experience with having changeable hardware there so, seriously, why?
This is only really a problem for folks not looking to buy it, though, so it makes sense that Apple focuses only on those that actually might buy it.

I think the studio lighting played a role here. The amount of lighting used is pretty extreme compare to more normal conditions used in the Verge video.

If you want “5K at 27", for a perfect Retina scaling” then by all means buy it. I don’t think this as important to most people, though. 4K is really “good enough” for a majority of people, especially considering prices on 4K monitors are pretty great And include things like HDR. People are also preferring larger screen sizes. I also think most people considering a decent monitor will also opt for a separate speaker system, making the built-in speakers pointless. For most people, then, you’re getting a good 5K display and nothing else. That $1,599 price means $500 to $1000 you could put into an upgraded Mac, or a nice set of speakers.
Choice that's what makes the world go around. The brightness, color accuracy, scaling, resolution are important to me. The refresh rate not so much, I am not a gamer, if I play a game it is on my PS5 not the computer; my computers are for work not play or entertainment don't watch movies (I do music production, sound restoration). The speakers and microphones, also don't mean much to me, can take them or leave them, the Thunderbolt charging point is as I have a MacBook Pro, the additional USB ports are also a nice add. What's important to me is most likely not important to you, that is why there are a wide variety of products to pick from.

All my Apple displays starting with my first Apple Monitor // to my last Apple LCD 27" Display that I purchased have always served me well. I have no reason to believe that the 27" Studio display (which is replacing an older 30" Apple Display) added to my LCD 27" display with my newly shipped Mac Studio Ultra (due 3/21) will not provide the same excellent performance and reliability of all my Previous Apple products. Your mileage my vary.

Welcome to the Internet.

On the topic of the monitor: I'm the target market. Replacing a 2014 27" with a Studio and needed a monitor to go with. My options were "Add to Cart" or "do research" and I made no mistake about which was going to take up less of my time. I'm guessing there are more people like me than those who actually have to worry about monitor specs (and those folks aren't buying cheaper monitors).

I can remember defending the "Apple tax" back when the products they released had the quality to back up the sometimes outrageously overpriced hardware. I think those days have passed, I think Apple is just getting more and more greedy with the Mac.
Likewise, the days are way gone and I will not defend them anymore - it will be the begining of the end for them - they're doing what they did when Steve Jobs was thrown out of his company all those years ago. They won't die as quick as they're big but it's going that way. They certainly no longer have my respect as a company - do I still buy their products yes - do I buy as many as I used to definitely not. And I certainly don't have the low I used to for them.

Apple Silicon is the only real innovation that i've been impressed with in a long time. Apple Watch is stagnant and there is so much that can be improved but they can't be arsed, likewise iPhones are drip fed 'features' - I used to upgrade yearly, now it's 3 years or more - due to price increases and limited feature changes.

Take a look at the Huawei MateView. 28.2 inches. 4K. HDR. 4:3 ratio. Aluminium design that looks a lot like Apple's Studio Display. Wi-Fi. USB-C and USB-A ports. Speakers. Touch-sensitive control bar. Height adjustable. Scales just fine automatically with a Mac mini.

It's around a third of the price of the Studio Display.

It may scale "just fine" for your purposes, but it does not properly scale macOS. The Huawei has a lower resolution than the Studio—164 vs 218 dpi—also doesn't do true HDR, and has a lower brightness (500 vs 600 nits). The Huawei only outputs 65W which is fine for most MacBooks but not the 16" MBPs.

But you are correct in that the MateView is the closest comparable display to the Studio.

Splitting hairs now. If you're willing to pay £1,000 more for 100 nits, go for it.
