For the folks using Thunderbolt, I'm wondering what you're seeing about the reliability of it versus just using the Belkin cable. I was happy to finally get TB video output working on my PC, but I am finding with TB that I need to occasionally replug to get the monitor to light up whereas the Belkin cable is ultra-reliable. I think this is just due to Intel's TB drivers. I also tried to put a TB4 hub in between the PC and the ASD and this was definitely a non-starter in terms of reliability - pretty much every time I'd have a game switch into fullscreen mode, I'd have to do a replug to get the monitor to wake up. I suspect that Apple's TB driver is much more mature and well tested than Intel's. When I was using the Belkin cable, everything just worked. My original impetus to go to Thunderbolt was to see if it was possible to get non-DSC output but that doesn't seem to work either.

Just built a new pc with a 3080ti, but the Belkin VR cable isn't giving me audio or brightness controls at all. Am I missing something? Motherboard is a B550-I and the Belkin USB cables are directly in the motherboards high speed USB-A.

Thanks for the recommendation! Does this mean everyone who's getting sound has also done this? I was getting the impression that the Belkin VR cable was plug-and-play for full resolution and sound at least.
Yeah I get sound (stereo only) and USB functionality, full resolution as well :)

Did you get sound before the bootcamp directions? I'm a bit wary of changing that much and would love to at least get sound just from using the cable. If anyone knows please let me know!

Yeah sound and full resolution worked for me without the Boot Camp drivers. But I wanted the brightness controls as well so I followed those instructions.

This is on a genuine Mac Pro though and Windows 10, not sure if that makes a difference.

Ah, maybe. I didn't know Mac Pro's could use 2080 TI's, that's cool. I'm using a regular PC running Windows 11. The sound remains blank, but my USB ports on the display are working.

UPDATE:
in an act of desperation, I plugged the USB-A cables from the Belkin VR Cable into this very cheap USB hub, and to my absolute surprise the plug-in sound pinged on the display instantly. Now the mic, camera, and sound work very well from being plugged into this $12 USB hub?? Instead of the high speed 3.2 gen 2 ports on the motherboard IO?

I'm happy to keep the cheap dongle hanging if it provides sound, I'm just really curious as to why this is happening. Is it a motherboard issue? Driver issue? Who knows, but I hope this helps someone else having this problem!

Did you check that the high speed 3.2 gen 2 ports work with a USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 mouse or keyboard?

I have an 8th Gen Lenovo X1 Carbon and my Studio Display works great with it. I also installed the boot camp drivers for brightness control.

My issue is that if I select 5K resolution from my display settings, the studio display shows a black screen and I have to revert the settings.

It works fine at 4K resolution.

Any ideas on how I can run it at 5K?

Comet Lake CPU graphics doesn't support DSC. The Apple Studio Display doesn't support HBR3.

Does the Thunderbolt port support two displays using a Thunderbolt dock or Thunderbolt to dual DisplayPort adapter (not MST)? If not, then you can't do 5K60.

Try a lower refresh rate? Between 30 and 47Hz. I believe one person was able to get an LG UltraFine 5K display to work at 39Hz.

Crossposting by request from the ASD owners thread…

I have a question and forgive my ignorance. I am debating this vs a LG 27” Ultrasharp. I will use the monitor with my work-issued Dell ThinClient that connects to a monitor via a USB C 3.1 / DisplayPort 2.1 connector. Will this laptop connect flawlessly to this monitor?

If it matters I am legally blind and downscale resolution to 1440 or less so I can read text (anything higher makes everything far too small for my vision unfortunately).

Exactly what model Dell ThinClient? Do you mean DisplayPort 1.2? The monitor might connect, but if the computer is limited to DisplayPort 1.2 and doesn't have Thunderbolt, then 5K60 will not be possible unless 6bpc or 4:2:2 8bpc or a lower refresh rate are supported. Intel GPUs don't allow changing pixel depth/format in Windows, so you may be limited to lower resolution or refresh rate options (5K47 or 4K60).

An LG 27" Ultrasharp will be less expensive and less hassle and more compatible probably.

Oops, 1.2 indeed. And it is a Wyse 5470 Mobile thin client. I’ll use my new Mac Studio far more than this client (I put VMWare on the Mac) but they might stop allowing that and force me to use the client at home 3 days a week.

FWIW it’s this machine: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/sho...d/wyse-5470-mobile-thin-client/xctowyse5470us

Hello, I'm planning to buy the Apple Studio Display. Sometimes I have to use it with my work laptop, which is a Lenovo ThinkPad L490 (User Manual). As far as I can found out, it have the following specs:

2022-06-13 09_42_53-L490_L590 User Guide - l490_l590_ug_en.pdf.jpg

Do I understand it correctly, that it will work with the ASD with 4k@60hz? Thank you for your help!

For those interested my setup works. I have the studio display plugged into my motherboards thunderbolt port using the apple 3 meter pro thunderbolt cable. My mother board is the Asus Pro Art Z690 Creator Wifi. I have one display port cable coming from my 3090 going into the Display Port input of the MB. I thought I would need two, but one was sufficient for 5k. Sound works, camera also works. Downloaded bootcamp drivers, so able to change brightness using an apple keyboard and the bootcamp utility. System is stable, wakes from sleep, no glitches at all, been using it for a few days now.

Does anyone find the reds a little over saturated in windows? Is there an icc monitor profile for windows?

Anyone have luck with an RTX 3090 and the studio display? My windows desktop, connected via the Belkin VR cable DisplayPort, won’t display anything on the studio display. Not sure how to troubleshoot

I use it with a 3080 but shouldn't be different. The Belkin cable is generally considered the most reliable way to go and should work. Things to try would be plugging in to different USB-A ports on the back of your PC and flipping the USB-C plug where it's connected to the studio display over. For some reason, the Belkin cable only works when I plug into the blue USB ports on my PC, not the red ones. Also make sure it's plugged into the right port on the back of the studio display, only one is an input. If you have a second monitor hooked up to your PC it would make it easier to see what's being shown in the Nvidia control panel or if it's even being recognized. Other than that, unless it's a bad cable, it's really hard to say what's going on. I found this blog post from someone who used the Studio Display with a 3090 and they used an Amazon cable rather than the Belkin cable, which would obviously not give them sound, camera, and brightness controls but might be a good way to determine whether it's your Belkin cable or not.

I can back up this statement about the USB ports—the cable itself is reliable but seems to prefer certain ports over others in my motherboard (Strix B550-I). Even though they’re all the correct generation and bandwidth, I was only able to get sound with a certain combination. Alternatively, both usb-a plugs in the cable can go into the same hub (cheap passive ones work)

Okay let me swap the cables around, thanks! I have an aorus master board on mine - stupid question, but will this work with just a DisplayPort cable plugged in and not the usb? Or does it need everything plugged in on the windows desktop side to work?

Trying to simplify the setup just to see if video works
