Apple will likely launch the iPad Air 2 alongside the next-generation iPad mini with Retina display this fall. The company is also said to be preparing to launch a 12.9-inch iPad in early 2015.

What does 'this fall' mean?

Isn't it fall already?
And when does fall end? Christmas?
So you actually mean some time before Christmas?

The battery on my iPad Air is phenomenal, which makes sense given how much larger it is than a phone.

I was being sarcastic! There is some thinnerphobia going around here! iPad air is thin but it could be thinner and lighter. The battery life is excellent and I wouldn't really wish for better.

Thinner product means less volume and more profit. Simple mathematic.

I posit that engineering and manufacturing a thinner, equally sturdy device with more power than before might actually be more expensive in many ways than just material cost of the shell.

Haha that's nothing compared to the original iPod boxes :D Such a waste of space! Reminds me of the old PC game boxes which were the size of 3 textbooks and inside was just a single CD jewel case!

My brother and I used to go to Egghead and judge a game by how heavy it was. With that newfangled "Acrobat" software, that model didn't work anymore. We had to print our own manuals on a dot matrix printer and tractor feed paper.

The store we had to walk through barefoot in the snow to get the boxes of paper was uphill.

Both ways.

I agree. Enough is enough. The Air is perfectly sized as far as weight, feel in hand, and overal sveltness are concerned. Much more and it's going to get a little dodgy, IMO.

I was planning on staying with my Air anyways due to their not being enough of a reason to update and I don't have upgradeitis. But, at some point how much ya bet they end up going back to a little heavier, thicker iPad?

This paper thin thing is a fad. You'll see.

mobile computers will probably become even thinner, lighter and more disposable for the foreseeable future. ;)

i have a pen but its not sensitive enough on the display. you always have to write a few mm from where u actually want it and it doesnt work if u have small hand writing like me. i also bought the apple bluetooth keyboard but that was annoying too going back and forth between tapping on the screen to navigate then going back to the keyboard to write.

The only pen I found worth using was the Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus. At least for drawing in Procreate.

So is it safe to say these iPads will not be available for purchase on Tuesday?

I am debating wether to get an air or an iPhone. Not sure I can justify both. I have the 5s and the ipad 3. Seems like the basic math says to get the new air, but I will wait to see what they announce. They will probably find a way to get me to buy both

I don't think apple will make the new iPad thinner. They released a redesigned iPad last year so they are going to wait at least one more year before making it thinner. This iPad air 2 is more like an iPad 5s than an iPad 6 . They are most likely going to upgrade the internals (A8, Touch ID, camera) but keep the same design; and If they won't redesign it, it doesn't make sense to make it just thinner. Apple has never made a product thinner 1 year after redesigning it.
Maybe the new iPad mini 3 will be thinner , because it wasn't redesigned since released in 2012.
7.5mm is already thin enough , they should make an iPad that has the same battery life as the iPad 2, which has a longer battery life than the iPad Air.
Plus making it thinner will require buying new cases , I don't think apple will redesign their cases again, one year after releasing them. Also, people who bought the smart case for 80$ will need to buy another one which would be a waste of money.

Thinner? Faster?

Colour me shocked.

We take it for granted these days which is a shame because every revision of these iDevices is an engineering marvel in itself.

Let's not forget that the iPad Air is less than half of the physical size of the original iPad, whilst cramming in internals that are also a massive improvement too. Quite incredible really, when you think about it.

Carbon Fiber would be lighter and much stronger and much stiffer.

I wonder if they will ever make a change to that, or some other composite material as Aluminium really is not good at all being so soft and easy to damage.

I realize Apple would have to persuade people that a new composite material was actually very special and make people feel it was premium, but I don't see that would be hard to do.

A 5 minute mini documentary showing you scientific research, comparison strength and durability testing, and giving any material a premium look (and branding) I think would be an easy sell for Apple, and cause no real issues to get consumers to turn away from Aluminium.

What are the advantages to having a laminated display other than the device being thinner?

If the iPad Air 2 doesn't have 2GB of ram i'll stick with my current Air. No need to upgrade.

I see no reason to replace my current iPad Air.
I know its never going to happen but I want a SD card slot in my next iPad purchase.
