I was being sarcastic! There is some thinnerphobia going around here! iPad air is thin but it could be thinner and lighter. The battery life is excellent and I wouldn't really wish for better.

Ah! Well played. :)

You're right: as light as the Air is today, lighter is always better.

Apple's supply chain partners have ramped up production for components to be used the company's upcoming second-generation iPad Air, reports Digitimes.

A comment about their track record might be in order. Because it's not a good record.

----------

Next iPad needs 2GB of RAM and touchID, I'd be very happy to have multiple users on the same iPad you can switch between by touchID, but I guess I'll have to wait for that.

You may be waiting for a very long time. Outside of perhaps letting parents save restrictions and toggle them on and off depending on the finger there is no promise Apple will ever make user accounts on iOS. Plus a lot of history that they won't due to a rather clear attitude they see these as ultimately single user devices

Thinner a faster, but what else????

Perhaps iPad sales are low because people are simply no longer driven to buy something that is a fraction of a millimeter thinner and 5% faster.

We can all agree that thinner and lighter still is welcome on the iPad. The Air was a huge improvement in that area.

Thinner is debatable. Depending on the materials and the internal quality.

Lighter sure. These things are meant to be held so lighter is always good

----------

Still waiting for my super thin roll-up screen iPad :rolleyes:

I'm waiting for the table and wall mount. I want to be able to do those cool swipe tricks like M's assistant did in Quantum of Solace (which was one of the few really good things about that movie)

----------

unlocking my iPad mini seems like such a chore.

That is the very reason why I have always believed the rumors that TouchID would be on the next iPads. And opening the system up to outside developers just adds to my belief.

A lot of folks are using iPads for business etc so having a passcode really is a must. but it's a chore to have to put it in all the time and if you have it delay several minutes could be, in the right situation, as bad as not having it.

I'm fine with the weight and thinness as is. What I'd really like to see is an increase in battery, maybe it's just me but the standby on my air sucks. What I really need in the ext ipad is the ability to keep more safari tabs and apps open without the constant refreshes. That alone would force me to upgrade - I couldn't care less about thinness or Touch ID

The fact the new iPad will be sligthly faster, sligthly thinner and with a sligthly better camera is not a surprise. What IS a surprise is that Apple believes that's enough to make people update their iPads when we are already seeing sales dropping.

Are sales really dropping, in the sense of no one wants the iPad. or is this a basically recent thing which is likely because folks 'know' that something new is coming out in the fall and thus so long as what they have is working they aren't going to get something newer in the late spring/summer and 'waste money' on 'old tech'

We see this happen every time with the iPhone so having it repeat with the iPad wouldn't be out of the question.

And what are folks using now. I highly doubt all the world is using the iPad mini with retina or the iPad Air. The subtle changes might not be enough for those two groups but there are certainly folks rocking things going back to the original iPad that might find a huge and desirable difference. Just like the difference between the iPhone 5 and 5S wasn't really 'that big' but there were still folks rocking an iPhone 4 so it was huge for them.

----------

their refurb store is hurting their "new" iPad sales as well.

Not in Apple's view. They have no issue with an Apple product 'hurting' sales of another Apple product. Because that money is still coming to them. They would much rather have someone save $100 to get an iPad Mini that is slightly used than decide to go buy a Galaxy Note cause the price is $100 less than the iPad.

----------

So is it safe to say these iPads will not be available for purchase on Tuesday?

nothing is likely to be available for purchase on Tuesday. download the softwares perhaps but no hardware.

The earliest we would see anything is that Friday which is a very very slim change. The next Friday would be more likely. Have to give the stores some lead time to make staff changes, re arrange back rooms for the stock that would be coming in etc.

According to the BFs schedule he has a mandatory all store meeting on the 14th, which is likely to talk about the actual launches, what the rules will be (will there be unlocked phones, limits on numbers, how they will handle the lines etc). And perhaps some kind of product training say if a wearable is announced to be launched right away

----------

Let's not forget that the iPad Air is less than half of the physical size of the original iPad, whilst cramming in internals that are also a massive improvement too. Quite incredible really, when you think about it.

There is one major item they really need to do on the iPads. Make them repairable. Nothing sucks more than having an iPad that has gone out of warranty and the speaker fails. A part that isn't likely to be more than $50-60 in cost to Apple and yet the user has to chuck out a good $200-300 for a full unit replacement of the whole iPad because there are no blasted screws to open it up and fix it. Yes I know that that means that the 3rd party shops can more easily open them but they could set up some kind of system. Serialize all the parts and have them associated in their system. Then it would be easy to verify if someone has been into the device cause the numbers aren't correct. Or if the number isn't in the system at all, there's a way to check that its not actually an Apple part. And if folks could get cheaper repairs they might stop going to those shops as much. Sure it's a risk but for many folks going to a shop to pay $100 to get the screen on your kids iPad mini replaced is better than $200+, especially when this is the third time he's done it in six months so you already blew through that Apple Care Plus (which is limited to 2 accidents). If they could take the dang things apart Apple might be able to offer that $100 screen replacement themselves

I work with audio and midi.

The iPads are totally incapable to transfer midi over USB

A detail that you would have known if you did a little research before spending your money. So why buy a product that doesn't fit your needs.

As for controlling a product made from one system with a totally different system, you should have expected that. Why would you think that a device created and advertised as compatible with iOS could do anything on any other system. it would have said it was compatible with that system if it could.

Don't blame Apple for your ill advised expectations or that a third party company didn't design their products to work with both systems

----------

What? So is the iphone cheaper than an iPad?

carrier subsidies. Remove those and you will see that the iPhone is actually way more expensive

Perhaps iPad sales are low because people are simply no longer driven to buy something that is a fraction of a millimeter thinner and 5% faster.

Tell that to Samsung's marketing team. They are fixated on that spec these days.

My iPad 3 is getting pretty tired and has a cracked (but still serviceable) glass panel... This can't come soon enough for me. Really hope it has at least 2GB RAM, the 1GB in the current Air is why I haven't already replaced my 3.

Yeah, I meant, why it's on the 22nd, and the solstice is on the 21st. It seems like autumn is being ripped off a day.

The Solstice etc are based on a lunisolar calendar, which is why they have a give or take. Same with some holidays like Easter. Unlike Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc which are either a set date (Dec 25) or a set day (first monday of Sept, 4th Thursday of November), Easter is first Sunday after the first full moon following the March equinox. Because of this, the date can be a huge variation. I believe Passover, Chanukah etc are on similar systems.

The amount of RAM in a device is not the whole score. if the software system can't use it well then you could have 20GB of ram in there and still have issues. On the flip, if the system can use the RAM well, having 'less' isn't an issue. I suspect that with Metal we will see a huge improvement in how iOS uses RAM so perhaps this whole "If it doesn't have X GB it is crap" should wait until we actually see the performance

Something in the current iPad needs to be changed. If it isn't more RAM, I don't know what it is. I have two tabs open in safari. I open a third tab with a basics webpage, and do nothing with it. I then immediately go back to the previous tab I was viewing. It reloads from scratch.

This doesn't happen as much on iPhone. Something needs to be changed.

is that all they can do? make it thinner? these minor changes are annoying. all they have to do is come out with a new version with no changes and people just buy it. sadness.

Don't agree, the lighter the iPhone is, the less damage it will occur when dropped.

Ooh physics... What is definitely true is that the lighter the phone is, the less force it will have when it hits the floor (Force=Mass*Acceleration). But then if it's thinner, it's also weaker, so it will require less force to break. They might just cancel each other out. But that's talking about the phone as a whole. We're probably just talking about the glass here since it's probably the part most susceptible to damage. And the glass would probably stay the same size no matter how thick they make the phone overall. If those assumptions are true, then yes I agree, a thinner phone would indeed be less likely to break the glass. haha. This comment was probably unnecessary.

For me..... get rid of that huge ugly physical home button, every time it clicks i lose my marbles. just give me thinner top and bottom bezels, get rid of the facetime camera, i never use it on myself, i want the freedom to attach a better cam on thank you spanking much. i like the freedom to use the tablet in landscape mode exclusively. with the thick ugly big fat top bottom bezels is obvious they are forcing me to use it always in portrait mode, vomit chunks!

Make true multi-tasking possible already, I want full access to all the pixels and screen real estate, and not confined to one app open at a time on the screen thank you chunks.

I love you all.

For me, thinner is always an improvement, because as I keep pointing out, thinner translates with near-certainty into lighter. I don't care so much about how thick a device is, but weight is for me the key factor both for smartphones and for tablets. The first iPads were for me just at the border of what I can live with in terms of weight. The iPad Air is finally in the usable range. But every additional few grams that they can shave off the weight will be extremely useful. I carry my iPad around in the house. I have it in my backpack while travelling. Really, weight is an absolutely major issue - much much more important than battery life.

So whoever feels that they'd accept a thicker iPad or iPhone to get more battery life should keep in mind that this is not about milimeters but about grams.

I'd agree decreasing weight for the iPad is always going to be crucial (while maintaining battery life) because it allows you to use it for longer periods without getting tired. But I don't think anyone has ever gotten tired using their iPhone, have they? I know I haven't, except for the times I was lying on my back, holding my phone above my head, reading for an hour. But then, even just raising my arm above my head holding nothing would make me tired after an an hour.

Why are these minor changes annoying? Is anyone forcing you to buy the new model? What is the major change that you expect this year?

The change towards the iPad Air was a major one. Do you expect a major change each year? With the iPhone, Apple is doing a major change every other year, and then it is followed by an evolutionary rather than revolutionary change - Hence the iPhone 3G&3GS, 4&4S, 5&5S. Now they had the major iPad change last year, and it is followed by a "small change" where we mostly see a bump to a new processor and probably Touch ID. Same thing.

I'm upgrading this year from an iPad 3, so for me, it's a huge difference. But of course, someone who is forced by mysterious powers to upgrade to a new iPad model each year might be somewhat disappointed.

Tired? No. But I usually carry my iPhone in my chest pocket, and while it is not ripping holes into my pocket, it is noticeably heavy. And now that the screens are getting bigger, it will only get heavier. Someone who carries their phone in another pocket might not consider this an issue, but I think for quite a lot of people, it is.

I would really like having a light "iPhone Mini" with a 3.5 inch screen as an option. That one should weigh in at around 100g if built with the same materials as the 5/5S. I can understand why many people want a bigger screen, but I'd be much happier with a smaller screen on a lighter phone.

It doesn't need to be thinner. Lighter maybe. But not thinner. 2GB of RAM seems to be the most practical requested feature you are all talking about, save for maybe TouchID, though that seems to be a given at this point.

Personally, I'm more curious if they're going to actually tweak the design as previously rumored with the recessed buttons and the modified speaker grille.

Timmy's design vision is getting so old. Every new version is "make it a little faster, make it a little thinner, repeat".

It reminds me of the futurama episode with the space invaders. The only strategy Lur had was "drop down, reverse direction, increase speed"

There's so much innovation from other companies posted on this site, and sure most of it is crap but sooner or later something disruptive will come along and apple will be screwed with Timmy shouting "faster, thinner, repeat."

I'm with you. I do NOT want that garbage on my iPad b/c one out of every ten thousand users imagines that it may be mildly handy... =/

When they they make haptic/pressure sensitive screens it will be time; NOT before then.

Your post was TLDR, but even at a glance- you lost me at this guess: "9.7" iPad Pro $799".... Huh??? I've only EVER heard the placeholder term "iPad Pro" in reference to a larger 12.9" iPad... Also, the scribbling of a ton of numbers w/ no mention of storage just makes your little wish list/price list impossible to interpret & headache inducing... just saying.

Don't comment that I didn't mention storage if you're going to call it a TL;DR. Read it or move along. I often write in-depth comments. Sometimes these turn into interesting discussion and PMs with others on the forum. I briefly wrote for 9to5Mac while in college, and sometimes still work with Mark on stories. Most of my post was pointing out that there is overlap of different powered…never mind this is probably too long and/or difficult for you to comprehend. ;)
