Apple is tellings us so much about the next ipad from the names of the previous generation, primarly that is has no ****** idea how to call it.

They needed a name, that why they called it the Air. There is no Pro coming out...

is it me or is cook heading in the direction of cashing out while he still can. This is ridiculous; another ipad?! If you're going to make a giant ipad, optimize it and change the ui to make the 12.9" more functional. Who wants all that empty space in between applications on the homepage. Just optimize, apple. Don't take the easy way out

Hmmmm early 2014? Its obvious an iPad pro is coming due to the change in name of the current iPad to iPad Air, but in 6 months? Seems too soon

Hate to burst your bubble but iPad Air was named iPad Air strictly for marketing purposes to let people know it was made drastically lighter and smaller whilst retaining the screen size. Absolutely nothing to do with the rumored 12.9" iPad Pro that isn't being made, and hasn't even entered the minds of a single executive at Apple.

I just want an iPad for watching movies in my sofa with my girlfriend, wide screen, 4K resolution, feather light and easy to either hold or put in lap, also some option for watching in bed...

Without 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, you miss 50% of the quality of any movie. Sound is important too, not just picture.

They called it air because it was drastically lighter and smaller. More people will purchase it knowing this. Less people would purchase iPad 5 because that doesn't tell them it has changed drastically. They'd just assume it was more powerful or what not.

Well, as long as we're all speculating...

iOS and its hardware are getting more and more powerful. I read a benchmark for the A7X that indicated that, technically, my 2007 MacBook Pro benchmarked slower than the latest iPad Air. iOS apps are becoming more and more functional, desktop-like (witness Pages, Keynote, etc.) and with 64-bit processing, more and more useful for day-to-day work.

Meanwhile, OS X is slowly becoming more iOS-like. (Remember that whole "Back to the Mac" thing?) Launchpad for example. And look at how much emphasis they are giving to apps running full-screen. They never used to do that, now it's all they can talk about. Look at iPhoto running full-screen! Isn't it great! One of Mavericks' major selling points was how well it handled full-screen apps.

I think that iOS and Mavericks are eventually going to converge.

Up until now I wondered if Apple might do the same as what all the Windows 8 guys are doing, and build a MacBook Air with a touch screen.

But what if it was the other way around?

What if, instead of "a tablet that can run your OS X apps", the plan is "a Mac that can run your iOS apps"?

Apple could stand to see a huge explosion in Mac hardware sales because of all the millions of people who already have iOS devices, who have invested in iOS software. The other way around -- trying to sell a tablet or ultralight that appeals to the existing Mac user base -- would be far more of a niche market.

It may sound silly right now because the majority of iOS apps are still fairly trivial, but with more and more desktop-class iOS apps coming down the pipe, it could happen in the next few years.

I think most people who said Apple would never release a smaller iPad were just restating what Steve Jobs said publicly, and, obviously, he was lying, and those people were wrong.

Jobs never said he would never release a smaller iPad. Jobs just dumped on the 7" tablet calling them "DOA". It's just Jobs being Jobs, holding strong opinions weakly and putting Apple products in a good light.

Interestingly this is one rare case we know for sure Jobs wasn't lying or even doing something contrary while he was speaking out. We have court evidence where Eddie Cue discusses his attempts to convince Jobs on a smaller tablet in late 2010. Jobs made the DOA comment before that.

He also dumped on flash-based mp3 players, saying they were useless because they could only hold a few songs, and the displays were tiny and hard to use. That is, until Apple released the iPod shuffle.

He dumped on MP3 players that tried to add value by also playing video, asking who wants to watch video on such a tiny screen? Until the iPod + Video was released.

It's all marketing. Spread FUD about what the competition is doing, at least until you're ready to launch your own.

Sigh. So long, Macs?

That always bugged me about the iPads. Why is there so much empty space!? Even on the mini a little, but the 10" iPads just look a bit silly.

I believe when Jobs' said that, the average MP3 player was 32 or 64mb. That's about 10 songs, with crappy encoding. And I still agree that no one wants to watch video on a tiny screen, which is why we have Airplay.

So you can read the minds of everyone at Apple now? Why aren't you the president of the world?

Agreed. I bought the iPod With Video (30 GB) and I think I watched a TV show on it once, to try it out. Never again. I don't even know why Apple bothered, unless it was just a stepping-stone to get people used to the idea of iTunes selling videos and movies so they'd have a userbase ready for the iPod touch.

Even then, I rarely watch video (and pretty much never movies) right off my iPhone screen. AirPlay to the TV is a wonderful, wonderful thing :D

This thing better be a hybrid running iOS & OSX or it's a no go. No one wants to hold or carry around something like this unless it's bolted or stationed on a table. I'm sure the translation of the officials interviews meant to say that his company is starting production on screens for the Macbook Air finally receiving a 12.9 inch Retina Display.

Consider this one LOST IN TRANSLATION.

Starting out, I think the iPad Pro will still be a supplementary device, same as it's always been. Provided it has digitizer support (which it better, otherwise it'll be a HUGE waste of potential), you'll use it for single tasks like Photoshop et al., and pair it with whatever you're doing on your PC. You'll be multitasking on two devices, leveraging the strengths of both, rather than using one device to multitask like you would a traditional PC.

iOS controllers! :D

So it'll be a big expensive touch screen Wacom tablet?

I see where you're going, but even in that representation it'd be limited. I like the idea of using it as a controller / UI extension, but outside of that it can't just be the traditional iPad.

We'd need this thing to be the controller, extend the UI of MacOSX and 3rd party apps, and be a kick but standalone device that actually replaces the need for an iPad and Macbook.
