Everyone who just spent hundreds of dollars getting the iPad Air can now face palm themselves. Seriously, Apple releases a new iPhone or any of their other products once a year, so why do they feel the need to release a new iPad every 6 months?

LOTS of uses for this. Mostly professional.

1) Aperture and Final Cut Pro for iOS: No, not to replace your iMac or Mac Pro at home, but to use in the field and on set. Capturing photos from an SLR over wifi...capturing video proxies from cameras with flash cards, doing quick edits, notes, and selections in the field and then syncing that all wit your Mac once you get home? Perfection.

And a huge screen makes it useful to actually make real choices right there in the studio while walking around.

2) Cash registers. I'm seeing more and more iPads used as cash registers. This would be even better. Look at McDonalds - They put a LOT of effort into figuring out what's most efficient and their cash register screens are about this size. Clearly there's some advantage to that or they wouldn't be doing it.

3) As the 'brains and control' of professional equipment. We have an audio mixing board that you attach an iPad to. It uses bluetooth to control the actual hardware of the board while you can walk around with the iPad control surface. or leave it attached if you like. Either way, they'd definitely make a bigger board to accommodate this iPad and sound engineers would love it.

We have another iPad that controls our studio's lights and sound system in a similar way.

I only know about this product because it's in my field. I'm betting that other types of hardware are going to move to this model too: Build the machine and the software, but let Apple make the brains and the screen. A large screen is an advantage there.

4) Kiosks! Malls, museums, airports. I see tons of touch-scren computers for the public to use and they ALL SUCK. Not only will iPads provide better touch technology for these kiosks, I'm betting that they're way cheaper than the computers in the current piece-of-crap displays out there now. Bring it on.

We got people celebrating the ipad Air shedding a .4 lb. It's now usable they say. Oh wait, let's do a much bigger ipad at 13" that weighs even more. It's what people want..

Different strokes for different folks.

I think the ipad mini is a huge waste of money and time. If I want something just barely larger than a iphone, I will just default to an iphone. The ipad 'air' is bigger by enough to make a difference.

And a ipad pro is what I want because I use my ipad for web surfing mostly while watching tv. I dont want a laptop burning the crap out of my legs so the ipad makes sense. The larger screen will fit my needs perfectly.

this will be the screen for the macbook air 12.4" at 1440p that already been rumored to be thinner and with a better display

I just want an iPad for watching movies in my sofa with my girlfriend, wide screen, 4K resolution, feather light and easy to either hold or put in lap, also some option for watching in bed...

If the rMBP 13" doesn't have 4k, especially the rMBP 15", then the iPad certainly won't. At least not anytime soon.

Only makes sense if it will run OSX. Not many "pro" things can be done with an iPad. For content consuming and emails, 12+" is too big. IMHO.

If there is no ability to run OSX then the title of 'iPad Pro' is a little misleading.

iOS is OS X, it's just the interface that's different. Since that's the main difference, are you all saying you want drop-down menus, windows with sizable edges and scroll bars on a touch-screen device?

Sounds horrible.

I tend to think that this is in the infancy stages of the melding of the OS'es and weening laptop users on to these sort of pads that will eventually be used just like laptops are today. Drop at home or work with a bluetooth keyboard and stand and if they are powerful enough (eventually), and use the right OS, they may have a shot at mainstream success. I'm pretty sure there is a long term master plan at work here. The key will be in the full merging of the OS'es at some point. From that point onward I think we will start to see the laptops go the way of the 17"er.

It'll look like a tray in your lap. Maybe you can eat off it as well. Needs a cupholder maybe.. To each their own though.

When did the last set of iPads come out. People act like they didnt see this coming from a mile away.

To be honest I can't see why a big iPad makes any sense. The original one does, and so does the smaller one. For some people, at least.
But such a large device goes beyond me. A Mac is about the same size, and at least it runs OS X.

Both things have different usages, and at such large screens I can't see why anyone should use an iPad instead of a Mac. The extra portability is just gone...
Yes for the current iPads, but I'm very skeptical about this one. I hope it's just a new Mac...

The iPad Mini is hardly "just barely" larger than an iPhone. That's some mighty exaggeration there. Please.

Seems kind of silly to me. If I want a 13" screen I will use my 13" MBP.

I could see some people wanting to do all their work on a iPad Pro.

I am just fine with the MB pro, but aren't we really just talking about a Mackbook pro with a detatchable keyboard?

I would rather have an Air that this. It would be of more use for my needs. Would cost not be comparable to the Air as well?

Maybe I didn't explain myself properly. I meant to ask what an increase in screen size would add to the iPad experience. I use my iPad for Netflix, iWork and email, and for these purposes I've found the iPad Mini much more suitable than the full-size iPad. Yes, that is just personal choice, but a 13' tablet for sending emails seems like overkill.

Ooh, hadn't thought of that at all. That would be a really good idea.

People who want a laptop sized screen without the weight of a laptop and with the simplicity of iOS.

Especially if it's going to be left at home or travel in someone's medium/large sized bag.

I don't see Apple releasing a bigger iPad anytime soon. The iPad can do specific things better than a laptop. For everything else, a Mac makes more sense.

I think this is actually a screen for a new ultra-portable laptop, 40% thinner than the MacBook Air.

- The current MacBook Air can get up to 15 hours of battery life With Broadwell coming out soon, we will see another 20-30% in efficiency increases. A MacBook does not need 18-19 hour battery life. They can cut the battery size in half and still get around ten hours.
- IGZO displays are extremely efficient compared to today's screen panels. They can probably double the resolution while keeping the energy consumption the same.

I think the combination of Broadwell, IGZO, and 10.9/10.10 will allow Apple to make a radically thin MacBook Air with retina displays.

I'm guessing this will be a retina MacBook Air screen. No more 11" and 13". Just one retina at this size.
