Might be to kill off the MBA line? Consumers love it, but it cannibalizes the very similar 13" rmbp and the higher-capacity ipads. Every activated iOS device makes Apple more $$$ than any activated OSX device.

Probably this iPad will have a surface-like keyboard and (gasp!) maybe expandable storage. In other words, it might be a (gasp!) surface rip-off. Except it's totally amazing, premium, a miracle of design (imagining Tim Cook's keynote ...)

If true Apple is repeating it's mistakes of the 1990's. Too many SKUs. No product focus. Making products just for the sake of them. Not having a proper target audience for each SKU.

Jobs first move as CEO again was to remove all the surplus SKUs Apple was making. Too bad he can't rise from the grave to do the same again. Apple surely need it.

iPads are still pixel pushers. As such the particular screen count of pixels is specific to each "resolution." Retina, not retina.

Adding a 9.7" with pixel density 30-40% higher than the existing retina display seems unlikely.

The pixel compression was needed on iPad Mini to have both a smaller screen and the same resolution as existing retina systems to eliminate app and content reformatting headaches.

I would expect any super size iPhone to simply have the same res as iPhone 5S.

I would expect an iPad Maxi to simply have retina resolution like all the others.

A year or two in the future Apple may adopt a "super-retina" resolution for reasons passing understanding right now, but that would require an entire range of apps and content reformatting to match.

Resolution independent display went out with Postscript and Fractal, unfortunately. I want it back in some viable modern form.

I think what is possible and likely is a focus on 4K everywhere and half width 4K on some smaller devices.

So who thinks iPad Maxi, they should actually use the name and have a funny commercial referencing the obvious, will actually be 4K to take advantage of Apples public focus on it with MacPro and others?

That will converge tablets, laptops, and televisions to a single display standard. The holy grail.

No, I don't think a large format iPad lends itself to that purpose. It's best for use as a self contained kiosk screen and for people who use graphics in their business -- mostly artists and engineers, even as a cheap telestrator.

A 12" iPad is going to be too big to comfortable handling it the way people use the mini and Air now but will give flexibility to people who need a larger touch screen device so adding a keyboard to it really serves no purpose if that is what one needs. They are better off with an MBA.

Good point. I'm holding on to my iPad 2 and want upgrade, but if the larger screen is the only thing new, I might as well go with the Air. I guess I'll take the wait and see approach.

maybe they are the same rumor with the macbook air 12.6" with 1440p
so will not be the screen of an ipad and will be the next macbook air

Only makes sense if it will run OSX. Not many "pro" things can be done with an iPad. For content consuming and emails, 12+" is too big. IMHO.

I don't see them increasing resolution again. For 90% of people, current "Retina" standards are indeed "Retina" and most can't see the pixels as is. I've always thought the larger iPad could definitely benefit crossing the 300 PPI mark, since I can definitely notice a difference in sharpness from say a foot away to 2 feet away. Though, I doubt they will make developer's life hell all over again for such a small benefit.

This is just a smoke screen to hide the development of the new 'bezel-less' 12" Macbook (Air, or otherwise) that will effectively replace the current 11" Macbook Air.

Yet will almost keep the same form factor, because the screen will have no bezel unlike the current 11" Air.

Either that, or it is the remote for the new iATV set. ;)

iPhone 5C (yeah, that was a success... :roll eyes: ), iPad Mini, iPad Pro, etc....

Cook needs to stop expanding the lineup. Seriously.

True that. This insane "bigger lineup is better" and "make previous year model with plastic shell to increase margins" thing needs to stop.

If that's what Apple is going for, maybe it'll be a Surface killer. Take everything that Microsoft did wrong (everything) and do it right.

This def needs some kind of built in kick stand or specialized case that props it up. I can't imagine holding a 12.9" tablet for any considerable amount of time.

That's some mighty fine wishful thinking... But the 11" Air is unique. If it gets updated to 12", it will be thicker and the battery life likely won't be as good.

I'm sure it will be different this time... at least until it isn't.

Shall I hold the purchase of iPad Air and see what the iPad Pro is all about?

Hi, I plan to buy the iPad Air in Christmas time. Given that the iPad Pro is coming soon and we don't know what features would be included, shall I wait for the iPad Pro to come out before deciding? One reason I want to buy the iPad Air is that my rMBP 15" is heavy and too big to use at the bus stops or on the bus. I may have this issue with the iPad Pro. Originally I thought of using my Samsung Galaxy Note 1 and 2 to do simple tasks such as reading pdf. They are too small. Zomming all the time is inconvenience.

You can purchase a base 13" MacBook Air for less than $1,000 and a base ipad rMini for $400. This would give you two devices that are optimized for their use. I am not sure what I would do with a 13" iPad, but after you purchased bluetooth keyboard and covers and added storage, it would probably be very close to the cost of the laptop and tablet.

With cloud computing, there really isn't that much advantage in having only one device.

The thing about a large tablet trying to be a laptop is that it will likely end up not being a good tablet (too bulky) and not being good laptop (OS not optimized for keyboard and trackpad).

iPad Pro? Better come with some form of pressure and tilt sensitive stylus support, and yes a respectable colour gamut if it is to deserve that label.

There is no confirmation of a iPad Pro. Just rumours at the moment.

They are making a bigger iPad and not a bigger iPhone...I don't get it.
