You guys (or girls) wanting to keep the iphone screen the same size are nuts. Do you people want more iphone users switching over to Android? And there is no way in hell you are going to attract Android users to a 3.5 inch screen.
I love competition but Apple needs to man up and make some serious changes if they want me and other Android users to make the switch. People wanting the 3.5 inch display are only thinking about themselves; to blind to see that Android is too much for them.
Um... the majority of normal people who buy android phones buy them because they are cheaper or because they couldn't get the iPhone on their network when they were looking to upgrade, not because they have a bigger screen, i.e. not because the phone was particularly good, but because it was good enough for what they wanted. If you look at many statistics polls, of the people currently locked in to contract with an android phone, about 68% say they are considering an iPhone as their next phone because they prefer the simplicity despite the higher price. Contrast that to iPhone owners who overwhelmingly would prefer to stick to the brand.

Those people are still around. They are the ones being out voted in the poll on the front page, complaining of pocket size, one hand usage, etc.

You know, the Cabbage Patch people.

LOL yeah. I think it's time for the iphone to have a bigger screen.

It's not about the extra work. It's about the purity of the OS. And the lazy developer who makes an app with ONE resolution in mind.

i.e. Apps that stretch on the 4" phone, and get less clear (not Apple-like, not a Job's perfectionist product). or Apps that are not compatible with iPhone/iPod Touch Gen 1-5. Neither scenario is desirable - for the developer or Apple.

Fragmented OSs are the characteristic of Windows and Android. Personally, I do not think there is room for fragmentation in Apple's ecosystem.

It's a bit late to be worrying about "OS purity".

As you pointed out, there already is app display fragmentation in iOS, which not every developer is willing to address.

iOS has only been out four years and there are three screen types to deal with, with another on its way if the iPad gets a hires screen.

There's also OS fragmentation, with some devices allowed to multitask; others not.

"Fragmented OSs" are characteristic of the march of progress. There's no way out of it. Better to dive in and deal with different resolutions early on.

Otherwise, we end up in the same position as those phone makers who wanted to keep 320x240 screens forever.

look at how much of the picture gets cut off without that extra half inch!

"Surely, you can't be serious...". I think the picture is doctored to exaggerate the difference. What am I saying, not exaggerate, but plain lie about it. What determines how much fits into a screen of a given size is the number of pixels. I'm sure it can be debated that other factors may bear into it, but this is the main factor. A 15'' 1024x768 display shows as much content as a 13" 1024x768. The latter will show it smaller, but as much content from the image.

According to the same engadget site the Samsung has a 800x480 screen. The iPhone 4 has 960x640. The iPhone does have a higher number of pixels. Saying that I don't know how they came to that exaggerated comparison. I don't see any reason for it. It is as if a 42" flat screen TV couldn't show as much of a movie as a 50" TV. Ridiculous what engadget has done.

I have an iPhone 4s and a Nokia N9

The n9 has a 3.9" screen and is pretty much identical size wise to the 4s - so as long as Apple can rework the home button, or like the N9 get rid of it ompletely - there's no reason for the phone to change size by incorporating tad bigger screen.

Levi's are not the only jean's manufacturer, just the only one nerds and peps who are not down people know about.

Pick your category.

Steve was caught dead in Levis.. and, for the most part, I was born into Levis. They're comfy and work just fine.
I don't need my Jeans cupping my testicles back into my body. Those are called ovaries; and there's a sex-change operation for that.

Well said. Apparently the "march of progress" is happening faster than human evolution. There seems to be a small segment of users with Neanderthal like fingers, unable to contemplate or adjust to a larger screen size. :D

Levi's make the best jeans for the cost, period.

Most department stores sell them for $38 each. Can't beat the classics.

I didn't realize we had so many [denim] fashion mavens. :)

You're killing me ... :D

Ahhh. That explains it. You shop in department stores. Your nerdom is complete.

Pffft, you don't know me!

I buy most of my clothes at Gap and Urban Outfitters but Gap has overpriced jeans and UO only sells skinny jeans (I have muscle on my legs so that's a no-go). Note that almost all of UO's jeans are Levi's too.

Pretty much all I buy at department stores like Dillard's is Levi's.

Most of the jeans like Lucky Brand are overpriced and gimmicky.

True... but the N9 has a 16:9 screen. It's a different aspect ratio... a different shape.

It's because of that they can get a 4" screen in the same footprint as the iPhone.

A 4" 16:9 screen would be a different size than a 4" 3:2 screen.

The Gap, Urban Outfitters, these are all nerd traps, made to look cool for uncool people. For people who are not particular on how they look, just run of the mill.
Levi's is an American staple that has been around for 100 plus years, I get that. Doesn't make them cool.

would a 4" with the ipad current resolution suffice as a retina display?

Yes, BUT the aspect ratio is wrong. the iPad is 1024x768 at a 4:3 aspect ratio, it's not slim enough for the widescreen iphone.

I actually think the iPhone could look AMAZING at 16:9, but would it look too thick?

A 4" screen with the current 960x640 resolution would have a pixel density of 288 ppi, not retina. I'm sure that Apple would never go back to retina displays.

sinsin, please tell us what the cool kids wear these days.

i'm genuinely interested in what they wear...
