I not interested in buying an expensive phone and then having to purchase an additional charger. Not including a charger with the phone makes Apple look like an unfriendly miser.

It won't help the environment either - people still need chargers and they are now going to buy another box which requires additional transportation and energy usage.

There is no nice way to paint it. Actions like this make Apple look like a miserly scrooge.

I would rather Apple give a voucher for a cable/charger with an option to discount a wireless charger instead
People who need them can then get official apple ones

I have multiple chargers/cables over the place, so often the new one remains in the box

Why bother getting the charger when you can have one perma plugged into the various outlets?

That's me.

I already have a charger at my desk... at my bed... in my cars... and in my travel bag.

Oh... and none of those are the Apple white brick. They are all Anker multi-port chargers. Plus I have a couple Anker battery packs too.

So yeah... I have no shortage of ways to charge my devices. It wouldn't bother me if Apple didn't include a charger... though I'm sure it would upset others.

But looking beyond Apple... there are 1.5 billion smartphones sold every year. And they all come with charging bricks. So that's 1.5 billion new charging bricks every year too.

Something's gotta change. This is getting a little ridiculous.

The decision would have been made a L O N G time ago. This is just to get people thinking and used to the idea.

Imagine the transport savings for Apple alone, in a single crate you can get 2 or 3 times as many iphones in a reduced size box. Think VHS vs DVD.

Do not be fooled by smug environmental claims, this is all about Apple trimming off millions of $'s worth of costs. Milking every single cent.

And people used to laugh at saying "Micro$oft"

I, and I assume most people, sell it with their old phone, therefore we need a new one with whatever phone we upgrade to. Stop being cheap and continue to include the adapter.

Every single user in the iPhone upgrade program gets to keep that adapter every year. I probably have 10 of these things around and I virtually never, ever use them. This is not the first time a company has opted to do something like this and the savings aren't just the cost of the charger.

Why is an environment claim smug? Of course it's about cost...but smug?

Yea, smug is the wrong word. It is a blatant smoke screen to cover the ongoing greed of Apple. All their nonsense about recyclable aluminium and so on. Sure it helps bit but they continue to operate in a way that forces people to dispose of items which could be repaired if Apple had built them differently.

I’ve got over a dozen charging blocks from over the years. Can you recycle them at the App Store? You can’t recycle them with a local recycler.

I’m fine with them not including it if the cable lasts longer. The lightning cables just don’t last very long with the gold plated connectors getting scraped.

It baffles me how many tech journalists (and people in general) are defending this move by Apple. When I read this story I thought everyone would be in agreement but nope.

If we can’t agree with something as basic as shipping a charging brick with your phone we’re all pretty screwed.

After looking over the smug anti-environmental comments, I’m really looking forward to Apple only including a charging cable.

Nobody is a first time phone buyer anymore, unless you’re a child, and in that case you’re probably inheriting one from your parents. You’ve all got chargers already, and if you’re commenting in these forums, you’ve all got a Mac with a USB-C port (unless you’re just some anti-Apple troll). You don’t need yet another charger every time you buy a phone. Come on.

Sell it with my old phone as a brand new accessory, with the cable and EarPods new in the wrapping, there goes that advantage.

They'd be available to avoid all negative PR by including a coupon in the box:

Use it to get a free crappy charger, a discount on a premium or Qi charger or convert it to a little App Store credit. That should be enough to convince people and will also reduce costs.

In 1-2 years people will be used to it.

I still use my Apple 5w power adapter for my 6s. If apple doesn't include one for the iPhone 12 I will just charge my phone using my Mac and buy a third party block later instead of buying an Apple one like they want me to do.

I’m okay with it as long as the discount the phone the exact cost of a new charger. Then it’s optional but also it won’t feel like a rip-off to buy a $1,000 then need to pay for a charger on top of it. I.e Make the phone $970 and the charger $30

The iPhone charging adapter is junk, and I never use it. Most people I know never use it either. It not cheap to reduce something that never gets utilized.

I have a drawer full of random chargers, many Apple. I like your idea. I'd actually just give the customer a gift card for the value of the charger. They can use it to get a charger, if needed, or, if not, they can spend it on something else at the Apple Store, or pay for some Apple services.

It would be killer if they included a wireless charger of some kind, to make up for their vaporware — AirPower. But that’s just a hope and a dream at this point.
