That would suck, but I am not sure that when you get to the level he is at, professionally and financially, that you could be wooed directly to one of your top competitors. He wasn't some hired gun at Apple, he helped make and shape who they are. It is in his blood. His next chapter will be much less ambitious.

Think George Lucas selling Lucasfilm to do artsy films.
True. He can't really match the stuff he does at Apple, so my guess is he'll do more experimental or artsy stuff after Apple. Didn't he once say he wanted to design cups or something?

And if that next new and better thing really and truly couldn't be a technological device, Sir Jonathan, what would it be instead?

Ive mulls.

"I'd like to design cups."

Cups?

"Cups."

With handles or without?

"Ah," he says with a grin. "That's for me to know."

He is the last of creative Apple. If he goes it is all business at Apple and that going be fast road to Walmart style of product and beat competition with price. I am sure they no such stupid people on the board

Please speak for yourself. I hope it is true and Human Interface Design is finally handed back to someone who isn't an Industrial Designer.

Industrial Design Not Good For Humans.

He didn't change how iOS 7 functions. There really aren't many differences. I'm saying this as a graphic designer; I like what he did. I personally feel that iOS needed a huge makeover and I like the direction they chose to go in.

Sure? You know all 80,000 people working at Apple? Impressive.

Liking the direction doesn't quite cut it, the end result is what counts, not the direction. I fully agree that the direction is good, but I can't say that iOS 7 is the most beautiful OS ever, even though I prefer it over Android and Windows Phone.

So still a lot of room for improvement.

He's a design icon. If there's anything standing between Apple and Samsung right now, it's him.

or a clause in a contract that prohibits someone to work for so many years in the same field at a different company to avoid things like "android" ever happening again. pretty standard in the industry

Strained

Just followed that USA Today link and was shocked at the picture of Ive.
He's 46, one year older than me yet he looks much much older.

Maybe he needs a break, he's done well over the last decade.
I wouldn't like to see happening to Johnny what happened to Steve.

the politics and corruption are reigning free at apple now, just like in the 90s.

With the update to the "story" don't you kind of feel like this was an overreaction, at the very least?

As for Ive being named CEO, I don't see it. I don't see Ive being a CEO-type. Some seem to not see that if he were to be CEO, his involvement in design would be more high-level and perhaps damper his ability to truly create as he has to run the company.

You guys are so paranoid. What will you do if the guy retires early or finds another job outside Apple?

Illegal in California.

Eddie?

Can't you work something like that in the severance package? Something like, we'll pay you 2 years of salary if you sign a contract that you wont work for our rivals during that period?
