Wow, that's all I can say. I think he represented all that is good about apple, I'd hate to see him go :(

Yep from my first G3 iMac upwards everything has had a bit of Ive's magic. It would be a loss undoubtably.

It's arguable that innovation has slowed since Steve's death - with Ive's out of the picture I would fear for where the company would be heading - but then at the same token fresh blood might be the drive for innovation Apple needs... who knows ?

That was quick and panic everted.

When is Apple going to get into the 21st century when it comes to online? It still blows my mind that they have to take their store offline in order to update it.

We all hope this is an error.
Please speak for yourself. I hope it is true and Human Interface Design is finally handed back to someone who isn't an Industrial Designer.

I don't think you realise just how huge a task it is to update an online store the scale of Apple's. All sorts of issues can arise if they just randomly update things during people's shopping sessions.

Edit - Also, he hasn't re-appeared for me.

This really is an Oh Crap! Moment.

Imagine if Samsung hired him for a boat load of money.

He wouldn't go to Samsung, he clearly respects decent products. You can't deny that the quality of iPhones and all the other Apple products is much higher than anything Samsung produce

How does Amazon do it? Or Walmart, or. Target, etc. I've never gone to Amazon and received a message that the site was down because it was being updated.

This Apple cult thing can get ridiculous... stop speculating! nobody knows the reason... but most importantly, who cares! even in the far fetched case he got canned, which I seriously doubt since it'd be a PR nightmare for Apple (thanks again to the sentimental fan base), it's not like Ive has the world monopoly on design... and, in case you haven't noticed, it's also not as anyone there is/was infallible....

It's just phones, tablets, computers and a bunch of code lines, people... And they make them to make money. It's just a business, and everything they do has to do with money. As important as they are for lots of us as everyday work/play tools, they're just that: tools. And thank god, Apple isn't the only one making them. At the speed things develop, we'll have new, different, more useful tools in the near future, which possibly won't even involve Apple or any of the actual shops.

Relax!

If you really want to worry about something important, worry about global warming, global income inequality, money in politics, drone warfare, cyberspying.... anything other than a picture missing on a corporate website!

In other news, someone moved a chair where Steve Jobs sit once...

That's the right attitude. Your employer is lucky to have you.

We do, or I do, worry about many things and discuss and act on them. But like you , I also have a little time to think about and discuss apple. Unless of course I have missed something and you putting us all to rights is actually more important than global warming, income inequity (more of an issue than the symptom that is inequality), etc. if I have then please let us know the system of how to rank these things. Save the world.

Some of the comments on here are incredible. People feeling sick to their stomach? Stop being so dramatic. Its a technology company that make great products not your girlfriend cheating on you.

Apple will survive if he is gone, personally I can't imagine him leaving though he's too important.

He's a design icon. If there's anything standing between Apple and Samsung right now, it's him.

So, since speculation is the name of the game, here are some possible reasons:

  1. An unpaid intern accidentally deleted the picture from the site, and they have no backup.
  2. They are changing his picture to a recent one, after he got hair-plugs.
  3. They fired him after finding out he's been secretly plagiarizing old sci-fi movie objects designs.
  4. He's quitting Apple to join Steve Wozniac in a new Android device startup.
  5. Since he's a bit isolated from the rest of management, due to security, he never received the email for the photoshoot, and refuses to pay from his own pocket.
  6. They never took Forstall's passwords away from the intranet, and this is his revenge.
  7. He challenged Tim Cook when they tried to make wearing a shirt mandatory for senior management, to which Ive replied: "make me, mother-*********".
  8. It's a bet they made among the team to see MacRumos nerds go wild: they are currently in a boardroom laughing it out. Next, they'll change the order of the site's top menu items for a few minutes.
  9. It's a prank they're pulling on Ive, to see how he freaks out.
  10. it's a scheme to manipulate stock prices for a massive buy back plan.
  11. The team in charge of the site doesn't know, blames it on a mysterious glitch... Tim Cook is suspicious, and demands they admit someone screwed up.
  12. It was a cyber attack by a bunch of tea party conservatives, in an effort to "take their country back" from these foreigners.
  13. All other members complained to Cook about why everyone else has to wear a shirt, except Ive.
  14. He quit, after not receiving the "employee of the month" award on January, for which Cook argued he's got enough awards already.
  15. They found out he really can't draw, after finding some doodles he made during a long boring meeting.
  16. He quit after Tim Cook and his team refused to address him as Sir Jon, and bowing to his title Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
  17. His job is being outsourced to china.

:D
