The site used to be a bank branch, wasn't exactly the most stylish building all around, I worked for the ban and was on the 11th floor or so of the building.

Although the address is King St the King St side of the building will only be about 1/3rd the length of the George St side. Building is quite shallow when looking at it from the George St side.

Shame I am not living in Oz at the moment as it would be great to stop by and see how the new store changes the street look.

It's the first flagship store for the continent. It has to be big and impressive.

All bow down to the mightly flagship Apple Store.....

(you, yes, YOU, the one with the MacBook Pro, you're not bowing!!!)

:D

Next to a Mickey-D's - how appropriate. Now, if we can only get you to drive on the RIGHT side of the street... :p

What a great looking store! I have many great memories of Sydney when I opened a branch office for a company I worked for 12 years ago. I got to live in Mossman for a year and a half and we always went to the Harbor to party. I remember Kings Cross as being a really strange but interesting place at night. Where else could there be rock and roll clubs and strip joints and transvestites roaming the streets right next door to a high end Ferrari and Lamborghini dealer! I remember going into an after hours club and meeting Hutchinson and his band INXS. What a great time! Congrats on the new store!

i dont really see there being massive line-ups the whole day like we see in america. sure its the only store in australia and sure we have heaps of apple fan boys, but i dont see the queues being 500metres back with people waiting for hours to get in. even when the 3g iphone comes out, there might be a smaller line but nothing MASSIVE.

I agree I think it unlikely there will be a massive queue. Probably some fanboys will line up prior to it opening to get their faces on the six o'clock news. It is, after all, just a retail outlet and I wouldn't queue for the opening of a Bang & Olufsen store let alone an Apple store (that and the fact the forecast is for rain :p )

I believe Apple's corporate European HQ is in Ireland for tax purposes, but they don't seem to think we're worth even one retail store ... ah well, I'll wish on.
At least there's one in Glasgow now, so we only need to hop on a cheap 35 minute flight to get to one :)

Welcome to the modern world Australia! :p[/QUOTE]

Yes the modern world,:p but the main challenge was stoping the kangaroo's from juming down the street to allow construction of the building.

I look foward to visting the store very soon, most of the apple re-sellars in Australia are very poor. No much stock or advice.

Cheers

It looks really huge, but its only very shallow. Its probably about 4 times as wide as it is deep, and thats for all three floors. Still alot bigger and better than anything else we've seen down here from resellers though.
I'll go down for the opening, but probably just an hour before before the suits get off work.
I hope they have made space for training rooms. Would love to get some FCP training.

I was walking past it the other night when I was going home from work, all I can say is that the photos don't do it justice it does look great.

And I know where I'm going to be come 19JUN2008  :apple:

I walked past the store at 7pm the night before last. There was a small army of workmen finishing things off to make sure the store was ready for launch day.

I don't think Steve would be pleased if the shop was incomplete on opening day. I sure wouldn't want to be the poor exec who had to tell him. :D

There are people queueing already

Walked past at 8:30 this morning (18th) and there were two people sitting in chairs waiting at the front door. Not sure where they're from, but they had Vancouver T-shirts on... with 32 hours to go they're keen...

why the hell is it so big?? 3 floors!! we dont have anything like that here in cali

Rumor has it that the Ginza store in Tokyo was the inspiration for this store. I am guessing Normal shop space on the first floor, genius bar and internet cafe on the second and theatre/training center on the third floor. Which seems to mirror similar arrangements overseas. Still very nice looking store. I'd be happy t have them down the street.

Been to a few of them now and 5th avenue is the most creative. Don't expect the second sydney store or Melbourne to be so exciting. Sydney 2 is in Chatswood and there is lillte exciting spaces out there. Melbourne is in Chadstone Shopping Mall and will be limited by the confines of the mall environment. not to mention there are already 2 apple resellers in both Chadstone and Chatswood ! However apple's decision to use Westfield malls as the location of its other 2 stores was influenced by a deal which it struck with Westfield for presence in the US and other more lucrative territories.

Just checked this out now, there's about 7 or 8 people "in line". Could be subtle marketing ploy, nearly all of them are using either MBA's or iPhones.

Also, I could be wrong but I could've sworn I saw some of the staff on Level 2 laughing at them...

We are not part of a marketing thing. The apple staff is cherring for the entusiasts.

wondering will there ever be a apple-store over here in New Zealand

I guess it may be worth it if they gave a special Australian Apple t-shirt that said something cool, like "Apple Goes Down Under". It would be a nice Apple t-shirt with a nice double entendre.

Think Apple simplicity mate :)

If I were doing the t-shirt, all it would be is an upside-down apple logo ;)
