Having played with a Nook, I can say it is DOA. Painfully slow. Beautiful device but practically unusable.

I agree. The Kindle is much better than the Nook. The question is--is the iPad good enough compared to the Kindle? If so, and it can do more as well, then the Kindle's days may be numbered. Even though it has a (painful to use) Web browser, the Kindle is still basically a single-purpose device.

I don't think Apple is aiming at the laptop/Netbook market at all. I think it's aiming for the media market in general, and the Kindle in particular (heck, there was a picture of it during the speech), and I think Apple may have a winner.

But #2, this is NOT another portable computer . It's really a dedicated gadget/device in its own category -- but basically a portable media viewer/reader. So complaints like "It won't let us freely download applications for it from the web!" don't hold a lot of water, IMHO. Since I only have expectations for it to do certain, specific tasks - why am I concerned if it can do that or not?

First its the principal of the matter, and second you aren't everyone. and I wouldn't call a device with a

The main thing that annoys me is that real lack of user input for things like diagrams. Currently I take notes in Physics class on my MacBook...which is fine until diagrams come along. I was really hoping the iPad would aid me in this...guess not.

Exactly. Missed out on a huge market segment, especially with the pitch by McGraw on "e-textbooks."

This is one of the things that I have been waiting for from Apple. As I watched a live reporter talk about it I was almost crying for joy! This will be the bigger brother for my iPod Touch (That I am typing on now). I can't wait for March 28th (when it comes out) Got to get one!:D

Don't also forget to buy 5" and 7" tablets (not from Apple though)

Hmmz the ipad is an ipod touch with a "folie de grandeur" quite dissapointing...

I expected a fully functional computer (or at least multitasking) with the full blown programs i use on my imac, not some stupid wound down non-functional app...

You can buy yourself a proper laptop (and run Ubuntu on it) with the money they ask for this useless gadget... (which is exactly what i am going to do, this was not worth the wait)

One single slim device for carrying around textbooks at school and writing papers and listening to music and cheaper than a Macbook? Forget about it. It's a slam dunk for students.

Good point. If they add accessibility features, such as reading out - the size is scalable already I think - they may start using them at colleges and universities. No more hauling around pounds of books.

First its the principal of the matter, and second you aren't everyone. and I wouldn't call a device with a 1ghz processor a "dedicated device" it has the capacity to do SO much more, like run flash, etc, etc but apple has crippled it. and you obviously know NOTHING about apple if you think for one second that the books, or apps MIGHT NOT have DRM, because its apple, it will

iPad

Was really hoping for e-ink and a camera, but the screen does look great.
Was also hoping for another "one more thing".
Either way, it's great... and yes, I will buy one.

IMO, the lack of flash keeps this from being a good adjunct device. If it had flash, then I'd get an iMac and this for the road.

Location
Wi-Fi
Digital compass
Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model)
Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

You only get GPS on the 3g model... why?

BECAUSE ASSISTED GPS REQUIRES A SIM CARD AND SERVICE....

Was that it?
No iPhone os 4.0? No iphone 4!
Well my take on the annoucement.

Dont like the upscaling of the iphone os. Not a big fan of the design either, it has already been done:( Needs a make over (ipod and iphones too!)

Do like the way the looks of mail and the picture gallery and things like iWork. The rest just looks blown up.

All in my opinion though!!:apple:

I'm glad someone else sees that too. This device is a ebook reader killer.

A Kindle DX is $500 (for now) this does 100x more. You have to have a bigger screen to enjoy books honestly.

It might not be a netbook KILLER, but its competes with it...and in MOST situations if you're buying a netbook its not for REAL work. I dont think iPad is meant to be for that either.

Lastly, I know this isnt a big thing, but it is a 9.7" GORGEOUS digital picture frame. A good one these days goes for a couple hundred bucks....

So to combine all that and price at at $499/629 starting i think is great.
This thing is not killing an ebook reader. There is a reason those ebook readers are eInk, because staring at an active screen for hours reading a book DOES NOT WORK.

I guess I was expecting more.

How could they forget the camera?
They didn't forget it, they intentionally held it back so that the iPad had just enough to make it a must-have despite its shortcomings. When everyone's bought this one they add camera, 128 GB etc, just to make you buy a new one.

Exactly - SPOT ON!!

This is strictly for pleasure and sofa diddling - a family iplatform. Totally maintenance free - no need for endless updating, having to maintain a PC or a Mac, no need for the complexity of running a computer, messing about with AV software etc etc -it's more like a touchscreen Wii than a computer.

It'll hit Windows harder than it will Mac which is why I think there is such animosity in this thread.

Evidently a lot of people seem to think that Apple were going to release a $499 device that rendered their Macbook's or iPhones irrelevant.

Folks, iWork aside, this is NOT for running your Final Cut Pro on! ( though I am GAGGING for the release of a complimentary Apple made control surface!)

Only a good 'iplatform' if there's user switching. While we don't have multiple children, I'm sure it would be easier if each youngster got their own profile. I know my wife and I would want our individual profiles.

No revolutionary feature in the device. Probably will end up along the HiFi.

Also no other announcements for iPhone, iPhone OS 4.0, MacBook and MacBook Pro updates. Possibly Apple's darkest day?:(

I think you are totally missing the point here. We all tend to be gadget freaks and want most or all of the very cool features discussed in the past few weeks.....

....but this device is perfect for a large number of "normal" users we want to surf the net, check email, edit some content (nice iWorks features!) and do it with a low cost device. Currently these are the people looking for instructions on hacking a netbook, since it's a low cost, portable platform for those specific needs.

I'm surprised that we didn't get more on the school / technical books as I'd expected this to be focused to the educational market and it's actually a much broader product.

So get over your disappointment - this is a great device for a large percentage of the population and while it may not meet your specific needs, there's a lot of potential customers out there for it.
