sorry to inform you that you might just be slow... did you not read any info? it is open to any network. You can use what ever 3G provider you want. Mr Jobs did say so.

Yup. It's unlocked and works on any compatible network. ATT just gave Apple a special price for making it the default provider within the OS. It will be interesting to see if T-Mob and Verizon announce similar no-contract pricing.

Mark your calendar. The Kindle and Nook death watch began today. It will be a cult product a year from today.

Not getting how this is any different than a computer, netbook or laptop as far as competing with eReaders. If you want to read a book on a LCD based device, you already have those options. Yes, it's nice that this one can do it too, but this isn't all the sudden something that is going to redefine the eReader market. For what it is worth, you can now and still will be able to read books from the Kindle store on computers, netbooks/laptops, and yes even the iPad.

I see a lot of criticism, but I'm not sure why. I don't have an iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle or any other type of netbook or table device. I one of those few people who've been waiting for something different and this "might" be it.

I'll hold off on criticism or praise until I can actually test the device out in a store.

I don't mean this as a criticism, but as you said - you are one of the few. Many people have already purchased a smartphone (iPhone, Palm Pre, Android, etc...), and/or an iPod touch, and/or a netbook or laptop. So, fitting this into our existing lineup is not so clear.

time to buy an iPhone or Nokia N900 for me.

Do you think if people who have already iPhone and Apple laptops buy iPad?

I like the device. In my opinion it is cool. If Preview exists ( sorry i didnt check the presentation in detail ) and if we can annotate on iPad and sync it back to Mac. That will be very cool.

But I don't understand where iPad fits if I already have a smart phone and laptop.

Can it be used mainly for ebook purpose ? I believe its price is reasonable if we consider Kindle's and Sony Ereaders price ( sony is 299 ) It offers less battery time but lots of extra benefits. So people who would like to buy an Ebook reader might go for Apple . ( if the screen functions like Kindle or Sony ereader )

My wife and I each have our laptops and iPhones. The phones are for calls, instant communication (email) and quick-checks of the web. But it is not good for browsing. The laptops are for doing serious work; when in the office hooked up to a cinema display. But not good for talking on. Nor for browsing the web and watching movies. So the iPad hits that middle area for sitting down and browsing the web or watching videos without being tied to a TV. (And for that we have our :apple:TV) Also good for the work she does in the field, where she could use iWork instead of having to plug in her Air.

Game/Set/Match.

The guy who linked this just won the thread.

Exploding High-Five!

Except that the very first iPod was ******. The iPod touch of today is amazing, but how long did it take to get there... 9 years?

I don't want to wait 9 years before I get excited about the iPad. In fact, they started working on this 8 years ago... I was hoping they were using that time to refine the tablet and make it revolutionary, not just "super size" the iPod touch that we already have.

The negativity may seem annoying, but I think it's justified.

Good post. With the photo-upload adapters, this is the only computer most people need. They don't need a full-fledged operating system because they don't understand it, and they end up damaging their computers. This is intuitive, portable, and has many qualities (like an IPS display) that so many screamers seem to overlook.
I would have done some things slightly differently (like being able to run 3-4 1:1 iPhone apps side-by-side, or the lock screen), but this is isn't an oversized iPod Touch. It's much more, and if you fail to see it... look at iWork again, at least.
This is the ultimate Information Appliance... with that much screen estate, developers can do amazing things... like the Brushes app. Exemplary.

I think this is ground breaking. Sure the general consumer won't think it's worthwhile and especially with all the rumours that have spread, people believe the product to be lackluster. I, on the other hand, am VERY excited, if Apple plays their cards correctly.

I am HYPED about the Camera Connectivity Kit. As a pro photographer, this device might be the simplest and greatest tool at my disposal. Imagine being on location and loading your location shots on the iPad. With it's IPS display and amazing UI, I can view, rate, proof, show my clients all the photos on the device. All without the need for a netbook or notebook.

With it's built-in WiFi, I can even email photos straight to my team around the world. This is the ULTIMATE tool for working artists.

Think about it. And that's just brushing the surface of things. Wait till March and you will see what third-party developers come out with. This keynote was the introduction of a new "platform".

Hardly Magical!

Man... I was so hyped and now I'm a little disappointed. Sure, the iPad seems pretty cool and the introductory price point (for the base model) is reasonable, but there are so many things this device doesn't do that it could... and to get 3G you have to pay additional fees per month and pay $130 more. That's crazy.

And where are the other product announcements? Where's the next iPhone?

Where is the front-facing camera for iChat/video calls?

Why can't there be a removable sim card to use your iPhone cell/data plan with this device (switch between the two) so I'm not paying AT&T for another plan?

Why $130 more for 3G when I still have to pay per month?

Where is multi-tasking????????

What about Flash? Pretty tacky to show that Flash doesn't work in the demo of Safari if you ask me. If you want to have "the best tech" you NEED Flash!

16gb, 32gb, and 64gb? That's all fine for a netbook, but if this is a media consumption machine how is one going to have a library of movies/games/apps to use on his/her flight from the US to Tokyo?

This device is cool, and if I had $829 to drop on a device I'd use to read a $15 book/$1.25 newspaper, or don't feel like carrying my laptop around and need something a bit better than my iPhone I would be buying one.... but I, like many of you I'm sure (who own an iPhone) don't like the idea of spending the dough on this and then having to pay an extra $30 month to AT&T.

Now if you look at this from the eReader standpoint - $499 for a device better than a Kindle (at $400-something) isn't bad at all and it does SO much more.

This launch would have been so much better if we had Flash, multi-tasking, twice the capacity across the board, a front-facing camera with a way to make video calls or at least skype/iChat, and no up-charge for 3G or additional data plan (if you already have an iPhone).

And again... WHERE IS MY NEW iPHONE?

Maybe I'm disappointed because I hoped for so much more and convinced myself that this device would be so magical and so revolutionary (since I followed the rumors so much) that I created expectations that couldn't be filled... but really, the tech is there, so why not?

Also, since the iPad is unlocked, does this mean it can be used on any network?

I think we just saw iPhone 4.0 OS. The new features will be an ebook reader, redefined mail.app, redefined music.app with better integration into iTunes, and a springboard with customizable wallpaper. The big features like multitasking won't be on 4.0. If the iPad doesn't do multitasking, which Engadget confirmed it does not, the iPhone for sure won't do it.

Disappointing considering the iPhone OS is out of date today.

... or a Lenovo pad

With an operating system that needs to be maintained, and apps that need to be installed and updated and the threat of virus's and spyware and hard disks with files all over them, and fiddliy control panels and lots of randomly hit and miss un-integrated apps without a touch screen unified operating experience, with bugs and logins and oh the list goes on and on...and I haven't even begin to talk hardware or user experience or learning curve or ease of use..

Man, these two worlds are just SO insanely far apart I just can't understand how you can't see that?

FAIL!

When apple released the iphone, it was new, everything from scratch. But with the iPad, they just made a huge iphone/ipod touch, and put a new "bookstore" on it and they think everyone is gonna rush to it?

I don't think many people who have iphones will want this thing.

e-ink paper mode eh? So it should have some new kind of display that doesn't exist?

Stylus?.. really, you thought it was going to have a stylus? If you want a stylus hop on eBay and buy a Palm V.

oled screen: would double the price and my understanding is that no one is really making 10" oleds yet.

64GB to start: No moving parts dude. You want a real hard drive in it?

I wasn't the one saying the device was a "game changer".
If by game changer, they meant an iPhone with a bigger screen, no camera and GPS, then yes it is that.

I have no problem with the screen, but it was supposed to be revolutionary

And I was wrong about the 64GB to start, it is 64GB max!!! HAAHAHAHAHHAHAA

And why wouldn't you include 3G in every model??? Most netbooks have that included. It should be up to you to turn it on.

The only thing nice about it is the start price, but I am not sure who they are marketing this for.
I was expecting a Kindle killer and got a big, 2nd Generation Touch.
"Most innovative thing they have done?" What is so innovative? A bigger screen?

Apple - You ask how much we will charge for iWork...

Me- You are charging for it???

This is MacRumors.

If you take away the spoiled moaning, whining, bitching, the forums would be empty.

And the fanbois bourgeoisie - we should never forget them :).

Seriously, this is a classic example of how not to hype a product before launch. Apple were never going to be able to manage expectations. Of course in this case Apple aren't solely to blame. The rumour and tech blogs are self-fulfilling enough for that to happen regardless.

Now I've seen and read the whole experience I don't think it's quite the disaster that it at first appeared. I still don't see this being a game changer though. Apple really need to loosen their grip on their obsessional control of what software can be run on these locked down appliances, add common or garden things like cameras for VC, offer true multi-tasking, etc etc. Until they manage that, this is nowhere near the proper tablet that a lot of people wished it to be.

It'll probably sell reasonably well (the price is unusually low for them), but it needs more beef to satisfy those of us who can see the real benefits of a powerful handheld device. It's a shame that it's only Apple who are even trying (though not hard enough!). The tablet PC alternatives don't even elicit a "meh" most of the time.

You forgot something...

macbook:
6pounds

ipad:
3 pounds

This does make a difference in handling and transporting it, I think.

The MacBook starts at 4.7 pounds.

I actually contend that the iPad would lose the comparison of usable portability. It's more fragile, offers no native protection, restricts functionality, and doesn't have a real keyboard for input. People toss a laptop in a bag & go. I think people will treat this with kid gloves much more than they do with a laptop.

Frantic Steve Jobs Stays Up All Night Designing Apple Tablet

CUPERTINO, CA—Claiming that he completely forgot about the much-hyped electronic device until the last minute, a frantic Steve Jobs reportedly stayed up all night Tuesday in a desperate effort to design Apple's new tablet computer. "Come on, Steve, just think—think, dammit—you're running out of time," the exhausted CEO said as he glued nine separate iPhones to the back of a plastic cafeteria tray. "Okay, yeah, this will work. This will definitely work. Just need to write 'tablet' on this little strip of masking tape here and I'm golden. Oh, come on, you piece of ****! Just stick already!" Middle-of-the-night sources reported that Jobs then began work on double-spacing his Keynote presentation and increasing the font size to make it appear longer

Ok, I'm sorry but I'm disappointed...

No flash is the biggest deal breaker for me. Yes, I want a netbook/tablet that I can keep downstairs in my house and access the web from there. Not having the ability to navigate/view EVERY page on the web is completely and absolutely unacceptable. For $499, if it had flash I would've considered it as simple a nice web browser and I probably would consider buying, but without it, it completely has lost its appeal.

Multitasking was a huge no brainer to me, this machine can obviously handle it and there's no reason to leave it out. The lack of file system access is also a big negative. I want more of a computer than a glorified iPhone, and I would've paid more for it.

Finally, YES, I wanted something REVOLUTIONARY. I wanted something I could keep downstairs in my house and have the whole family use for multiple things. I wanted to be able to pick it up and have the front facing camera recognize my face and unlock to my desktop. I wanted a simple hand writing interface where I can share notes with my family and send them to their desktops or take notes at work. I wanted voice recognition so I can tell the device which web page I wanted to go to or which song I wanted it to play. I wanted a recipe app by apple that I can use in the kitchen to cook that could read the next step to me, all hands free.

Right now the MS Courier looks like a much more impressive device (if it ever sees the light of day)
