Appliance

Just like Nokia, MS, RIM, Motorola, etc laughed at the iPhone.

I think the difference here is they were phone manufacturers laughing at a new phone.

This is totally different. I know that I was expecting a stand-alone device. More like a netbook, but tablet based. I don't see this as a computer, more of a computing appliance.

I was extremely excited about a tablet computer from apple. Yet this is nowhere near that.

I can't get over all these whiners. You get so much more with the iPad over the Kindle for about the same price of $499. The Kindle is dust compared to the iPad. Get over yourselves. It's not a giant iPod Touch.

Weight

iPad: 1.5 lbs.

Sorry, right. I'm used to metric system. 1.5lb

Macbook:
13": 4.7lb
Air: 3lb

If I was a professional photographer, I'd use it to show the photos to my clients on location. So slim, easy handling. fine.

Have a source/link to this? If true this sickens me

Does it sicken you as much as people who enter into contracts and then willingly break them expecting no consequences? Sure it's a bad time to lose a job which makes dissing your employer just stupid. If true they deserved what they got, companies have rules, don't like 'em? get a new job.

We'll need to wait for reviews. But assisted GPS is GPS assisted by 3G. That means it has real GPS.

What i posted was straight from the apple spec page

why would they list assisted GPS then in parathesis say (Wifi + 3g model)

This indicates that GPS is only on that model... right?

There are haters everywhere.

1.5lbs

Ok, very true. If a super lightweight thing is what you need, this could work.

BUT.

Its big enough it must be carried in a bag of some sort. -That makes the weight exponentially less important.

$700 for a 1.5lb vapid new toy.

or $999 for a heavier, productive, actually useful thing.

Being "future-forward" is not always better. I would rather stick with the past that is economically sound and functional, than have a fancy new toy that hardly does anything worthwhile....

Oh yeah, its really lightweight, silly me

I agree. Respect the contract, or else everything falls apart and nothing works.

This is a joke

I think this is ground breaking. Sure the general consumer won't think it's worthwhile and especially with all the rumours that have spread, people believe the product to be lackluster. I, on the other hand, am VERY excited, if Apple plays their cards correctly.

I am HYPED about the Camera Connectivity Kit. As a pro photographer, this device might be the simplest and greatest tool at my disposal. Imagine being on location and loading your location shots on the iPad. With it's IPS display and amazing UI, I can view, rate, proof, show my clients all the photos on the device. All without the need for a netbook or notebook.

With it's built-in WiFi, I can even email photos straight to my team around the world. This is the ULTIMATE tool for working artists.

Think about it. And that's just brushing the surface of things. Wait till March and you will see what third-party developers come out with. This keynote was the introduction of a new "platform".

What a joke. Simply the lid of Macbook Air minus camera.
Genuine test for Apple "fanboyism".

I will buy M$ tablet (if and when it comes out)

So you'll just pay $499 for a watered-down, locked gimmick? Brilliant!:D

You are basing this on your perception that everyone will be taking these outside their homes. My parents have a ****** old laptop that needs to be replaced, its used for surfing the web and emails. My mother loves reading books and has been considering a Kindle, this does both. So this WATERED DOWN GIMMICK is actually perfect for them. You need to wipe the **** out of your eyes my friend.

The Typical Life of users in Macrumors

Hype up Rumors everyone belives Rumors are some how all true.
Keynote Time ZOMG this is gonna be Roxrs. Woot!
Steve Jobs thanks for coming Everyone.
Events Done ZOMG WHERE IS THE CAMERA FAIL ZOMG WHERES MY MACBOOKS APPLE/Steve Sucks blah bla blah

3 years later wow this device is awsome.

I hope so. Macs are due. Maybe when they have an event that is when they'll start pre-ordering the iPad. Just can't wait to get my mits on one.

An iPhone hardware refresh is needed as well, I really can't wait till June lol, hopefully a different network too aka Verizon

It'll hit Windows harder than it will Mac which is why I think there is such animosity in this thread.

Evidently a lot of people seem to think that Apple were going to release a $499 device that rendered their Macbook's or iPhones irrelevant.

Which is a clever move of apple. They managed to produce a device, that takes the least percentage from their customers and opens up the biggest possible target audience that doesn't us an apple product yet.

It does some of the same things, better. The iPhone is still just a phone that happens to be a media device too. The iPad is a true media device.

Im not sure what true media device is? It has same browser also without flash, doesn't play any audio/video iphone doesn't unless i've missed something, and doesn't have the portability of the iphone.

Id much rather have updated iPhone and laptops ;)

Yeah, funny to think the Kindle was $399 when it launched. This is $100 more, not even that much if you figure inflation, and is much more practical (does more). You are correct, the Kindle is dust.

The only way I can see this thing fitting into my life is to keep it lying around the coffee table or kitchen counter, to quickly look things up, or do some internet surfing on the couch. It's just too limited to replace any of my current gadgets (iPod, MacBook). When I'm at the point in my life where $500 is insignificant, I'll pick one up, but right now this is not a "must-have."

time to buy an iPhone or Nokia N900 for me.

Do you think if people who have already iPhone and Apple laptops buy iPad?

I like the device. In my opinion it is cool. If Preview exists ( sorry i didnt check the presentation in detail ) and if we can annotate on iPad and sync it back to Mac. That will be very cool.

But I don't understand where iPad fits if I already have a smart phone and laptop.

Can it be used mainly for ebook purpose ? I believe its price is reasonable if we consider Kindle's and Sony Ereaders price ( sony is 299 ) It offers less battery time but lots of extra benefits. So people who would like to buy an Ebook reader might go for Apple . ( if the screen functions like Kindle or Sony ereader )

Well it doesn't have to be a device for everybody.

But as Jobs outlined it is supposed to be a better browser than either ipHOne or laptop. A better document reader than either. etc.

Many won't care and will get by on an iPhone and a laptop.

Heya

In one word,,disappointing

Where the APPLE sexy,cool design?
At first glance i said UGHHHHHH..

But when you look at the video at apple.com.It does look good and the software intuitive.

Let see,but i will definetly buy one.For the kids...

10hrs battery life WHAT!! Amazing

Okay, that's just asking for the impossible. Apple makes computers. I seriously doubt they're going to hurt that part of their business by replacing a $1000 computer with a $500 one. This is meant to be an adjunct device.
Anything more is gravy.

This is not meant to be an adjunct device for a significant chunk of the targeted market.

Apple doesn't sell computers in this price range. If all you have is $700 for a "computer gaget budget for a couple of years" this can very well be your primary computer ( If decide to forego the other options based on Windows and the rest). The applications can be downloaded over the WiFi/3G. You do not HAVE TO sync the device in order to use it. Yes, the synch is a good back-up, but can get apps and content directly with the device. If you don't have a computer the functionality provided by the applications on the device is not diminished in any significant way.

Certainly you can do more. (leave computer at home, synchronize, etc.) with a computer and one of these but the bigger issue is that it is more affordable. Therefore has access to more potential users. [ with the iPhone/Touch come sacrifices of much smaller screen where certain apps just won't work well, but it also costs less. ]

This is in part Apple's answer to netbooks. For some it won't be a good answer. For others it will be (does the limited amount of things wanted well with no fuss). Mostly likely the latter is a large enough group that Apple will makes tons of money off of this.

P.S. Likewise think of a family. The child is sucking up time on the computer. Would be nice to get them a computer so can get your computer back. :) Buying a $499 device is going to work vs. another MacBook etc. The parental controls and lockdown you can put on the device (probably) will be a "feature" for them too. Can synch for backups of the kid's computer. [ with Windows computer does the kid go off and install all kind of random software so that 3 months later they've been hacked? Not all kids just random mainstream kids. ]
