I was quite skeptic going into this event whether I actually needed something like this. The main thing that put me off was the rumoured price. $800-$1000? That is something I can't afford.

When I think about it now, I realise that when I use my laptop then I am in bed, on the couch etc. I only ever browse the web, listen to music and watch the occasional video. For anything I need to more with I can sit at my desk at my iMac. As well as that it will double up as an e-book reader. I am hoping there is a hack that will enable tethering with my iPhone so I don't have to get the 3G version.

I think more people are realising they don't require hugely powerful computers as most people just surf the internet while at their computers. To me this is Apple's version of the netbook and for most people this could possibly replace their laptop especially with the keyboard dock. You will then probably have a more powerful laptop or desktop on your desk. Obviously, people who work in video and photo editing will want to keep their powerful MacBook Pros but for most other people this will be more than sufficient and at $499 is affordable. With iWork you could make adjustments to documents on the go and for a reasonable amount of time with the physical keyboard. I would expect Microsoft Office to come to the iPad soon.

For this price I could sell my MacBook get the iPad and possibly even make a profit. The only downside is that you need iTunes and a computer. Even though most people have computers, if you are going to sell it to people with less money and developing countries like India then the price is right but they still need a computer. Sure it doesn't have OS X, although this could be the future of operating systems as we know it with an app store.

Excellent point man, I use my iMac for my audio needs like iTunes and Logic and I have a HP laptop that I use in my room for just surfing the net when I'm in bed. And that things gets DAMN hot after awhile, so this device looks very interesting considering its cost. My only beef with this it that there is still no flash compatibility. That is really annoying, but I'm sure I can get past that.

Hhmm, its ok, but like many have said before me here, its nothing special and i do honestly think the phone partners Apple has are really holding design back. No camera for ichat, due to AT+T not liking the idea of not using their network is a big fail. I really can't understand why apple is still holding the hands of the phone carriers. Apple has so much power to wield now it could do whatever it likes, but it doesn't and they keep the good add ons for further updates.

iPad has ARM processor. Microsoft does not have Office for any computers with ARM processors.

The upcoming web based version of Office will be (as long as the browser is compatible). The downside is that it doesn't install on the client side.

Wordpad is OK, but Office is better (OneNote integration etc.)

Are you using OneNote to take the notes or Word? What is MS Word buying you in the note taking task that the text processing that OneNote doesn't already do ?

What bothers me more is the defense of Apple's profits.

I'll wait for Apple to sell something I want.

I bet the folks over at Axiotron are breathing a sigh of relief at the iPad.
The champaign corks are probably popping over at company headquarters.
I wonder if they knew that the iPad wasn't going to be a real computer like the Modbook tablet?

I wonder if Woz is still involved with them? I wish SJ would spin off what's left of the computer biz at AppleT&T as a subsidiary and let Woz run it.

Here he is demoing the ModBook.

Well, this oversized iPod Touch is not for me. It's too limited to replace a laptop, and it's too bulky to replace an iPod.

The point of this device is not to replace those two items, but to serve as an inbetween device for the two, not a replacement.

I posted this in another thread, but here are my thoughts.

Ever since I heard the rumors back in 2006, I decided that I was going to hold off on getting a new MBP and that this would be the thing worth waiting for. So I waited 5 years (I got my old laptop in fall '05). And the day has arrived. Well?

Don't get me wrong, I think this is an excellent device, but meh...I just can't justify buying it right now. I don't want to buy it right now because I did just that when the 2G iphone came out, and then the 3G was released a year later and I looked like an idiot after that. So I have to admit I was somewhat let down, but not massively. I think this will do just fine and at some point I will buy it.

After being an iPhone user for almost 3 years, I could honestly say that if it had multitasking and a webcam, this would have served as a suitable replacement to my soon to be 5 year old 12" iBook with a 40GB HD. I got over the lack of Mac OSX well before the launch, and it's just these two things holding me back.

I don't want to spend more money on my old laptop just to replace the screwy pin power supply and the battery, which when you add it up, would probably total to almost half the price of the new iPad.

As I said, other than multitasking, which I could get easily with Backgrounder once the iPad is jailbroken, the thing which would have sealed the deal is the webcam/camera/etc. Even if it wasn't a webcam and just a normal camera, I know the excellent jailbreaking community would have gotten Cycorder on it right away. And you can bet your bottom dollar that they are going to include a front facing camera in the next generation, particularly once they get this thing on LTE (Verizon), and you know it's going to support videoconferencing/et al with absolutely no issues by then. As of right now in all honesty, I just don't think any 3G network would be able to handle it, so if they felt that 4G was needed to be able to pull off video chat/intense camera based mobile computing, then I am OK with that.

To me, no flash is not as big of a deal as it's being made out to be. I mean, I've been fine without it for so many years now on the iPhone 2G and the 3G, I am pretty much used to going without it in the mobile/portable computing experience now.

It will be a shame to pass this up, but I think I am going to have to. I'll wait for the second iteration, something I probably should have done with the original iPhone as well in retrospect (considering I have both an old 2G which I gave to my sister and my current 3G).

I am very pleased with the price point, and IIRC, the original 4gb iPhone started off at 499 as well. You can mark my words, this thing will be 399 by the holiday season as they prepare to launch the 4G iPhone, a possibly new MBP, and the second iteration of this thing which will in all likelihood also be on 4G. While I would love to get this product now, for those reasons, I have to exercise more common sense, patience, and caution than I did before and hold off till next year.

I'll definitely enjoy tracking the reactions and playing around with these in the store when these launch, though.

No camera for ichat, due to AT+T not liking the idea of not using their network is a big fail.

Far more likely Apple keep the camera off of this for the following reasons:

i. keep the costs down and margins up. Until they sell them in quantity not going to know for sure how many can sell.

ii. keep complexity down. It is one more component to add, debug and get exactly right. You'd also need a complete rewrite of iChat. Again an additional software team on a project you are trying to keep as small as possible.

For the front facing camera, iChat is about the only application that is going to leverage it that is bundled. Among the people that use videoconferencing it is popular. Among those that don't, it isn't. Skype too but only there are you getting into overlap with ATT.

iii. can add it next year and folks will label it manna from heaven.

Apple is way more conservative than folks paint them out to be.

iChat with H.264 isn't all that much more worse than folks streaming off of YouTube and they allow that.

:apple:

What annoys me about this is that a year ago Steve Jobs said that he didn't see much point in netbooks or tablets and that aside from browsing the Internet in the bathroom, he didn't see the point of them.

LOL. Since there seems to be a multitude of people here who think that the iPad is deficient because you can not put it in your pants pocket..... the ultimate "browse from the bathroom" device is ......... the iPhone !!! At any bathroom stall at a truck stop you can whip it out and start surfing. Hold it in one hand and whip yourself with the other. The point of that comment I guess was that it does not makes sense to build ANOTHER ONE. How many browse from the toilet devices do you need????

A bigger question mark though is why folks would want to stuff a radio inside of their clothes as the canonical storage location.

This is pretty much all they have given us, yet Apple are now touting this as the holy grail of electronics devices.

I don't think this is the final form of why Jobs might think this is a revolutionary device. Personal computers are much better at being personal when everyone can own one. This device class is a way for Apple to move the their computers out to a broader audience over time as they price down.
It is going to be beyond credibility on how they can't get this down into the $299 range in a couple of years when it starts off at $499 now. In a couple of years all of the components will be cheaper. just as with the iPods it will be tractable to do.

I suspect though that his world view is skewed. Not that hard for a billionaire to succumb to that. Some of this is also just P.T. Barnum. With the intro of the Mac , NeXT Computer , etc. it has always been this is "best legacy impact thing yet...".

Been installing and training people since the Apple IIgs and very disappointed, why do we ALWAYS have to wait for Rev B?

Would have been great if Apple had had the foresight to make one. I absolutely adore my HP mini netbook, But I must admit I'd probably sell it in a heartbeat if Apple could make a netbook.

This is one area where I think Apple has really dropped the ball. They would make a KILLING on a $399 netbook. It wouldn't be something to compete with the Macbook Pro line or "cheapen" the brand, but it would be a great way to introduce people to the Mac OS and get them hooked on it and then get them to buying the higher end Macbook's in the future (which of course would have faster processors, more ram, etc...). This is really a missed opportunity for Apple.

If they did one, I'd replace my currently Hackintoshed Dell Mini 9 for one.

The future

I think this device is a window into the future of personal computing needs, not video editing and power house work stations which will always be around for the professional sector.

In my opinion we have reached the summit of traditional desktop and laptop needs and companies are now starting to focus on what the average Joe really does with a computer/mobile device.

Love it or hate it this is the future where traditional OS based desktops etc. will be used for office and creative professional needs while the average Joe just checking email and surfing the social media sites will be more then happy to use a device like the new iPad.

We often forget that the average Mac Rumors fan is a tech type some what of geek the kind of guys and gals that build there own computers and always have to have the fastest processor etc.

Wow its sad how people are like it's a pos theres no way I'm buying one! It's useless, then the price is announced and everyone is like I have to have one! It's just amazing!

I don't know about this thing. I have mixed feelings. I guess all I can say now is if I have any extra money laying around I might get one.

The price is the key. I feel people were expecting so much, because the price was rumored to be around $1000.

Right.

Steve Jobs, earlier today:
So all of us use laptops and smartphones... the question has arisen; is there room for something in the middle. We've wondered for years as well -- in order to create that category, they have to be far better at doing some key tasks... better than the laptop, better than the smartphone.

The problem is, this isn't better than either of those.
