I'm sorry, but if you compare this to this, there is really no point in arguing.

You are missing the point. That screen on that lenovo "pops" out.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-hands-on-and-impressions/

The screen by itself is a separate computer. If you want to sit on the couch with just the screen you can pop it out and just sit on the couch with just the screen.

The complexity problem it has is that when you do that you get a whole different OS and interface. That may not be bad if they are skewed to the tasks you are about to do. However, it is kind of a dramatic mode switch when plug back in and Windows pops up. ( Not sure also how well they worked out the synch issues).

1. It's called the iPad. This makes me think of virtual sanitary towels.

2. It's too big for your pocket.

3. It will get heavily damaged in a bag, unlike a netbook or laptop which has better protection. Which means ugly annoying covers that will no doubt lead to scratching, also it means all men must carry manbags (unless they already have a briefcase, because putting it in a laptop bag means you may as well get a laptop).

4. Using as a flat keyboard with touch typing - massive RSI. On the other hand, using it with a separate keyboard means you have to carry a keyboard around with you - again, may as well be a laptop

So basically, it's a netbook with incredibly limited functionality, that has fewer capabilities than the other failed tablets companies have released, and has nothing to protect it from damage and no convenient way to type.

In conclusion, it's a glorified e-reader which people can play their iPhone and iPod Touch games and apps on.

Well I sure hope it doesn't burn your legs like my MB and MBP do for starters

However I do continue...

Also do you think a Car Charger will appear?

Will it work seamlessly with Airport Express and TV?

How do you print if your printer is non-wifi?

What is the etiquette for carrying one of these, sow a large pocket on your jacket or carry a manbag/case

Would it work with M$ Exchange Server?

I'm sure a car charger isn't too far behind. In what way would you like it to work with AppleTV and APE? You print to a printer the same way you print from a wireless laptop now, provided the printer is shared over the network. Whether or not it's wireless or wired is irrelevant. If the iPad has the ability to map a printer, it doesn't matter. I can already print pictures from my iPT.

Since the iPhone OS already integrates very well with Exchange, I'm assuming this does too.

I bought it for $600 new. The performance is not mediocre, it's a 1.86ghz Duo Core 2 low voltage processor with 4gb of RAM. It would run circles around the iPad and is comparable in performance to a 2.0ghz Macbook Pro.

Touch capability is overrated on a screen size larger than 10", it's really only handy for things you can pull out of your pocket. Try to stuff the iPad into your pocket.

And I have a real keyboard and 2 USB ports plus WLAN.

Go cry, fanboy.

I'm not quite sure how you arrive at your performance estimates, considering I have a slew of Windows 7 machines rated much higher than yours that do not perform as fast as an equivalently equipped MacBook. But keep thinking what you'd like.

The iPad is available with WLAN too; however I'm guessing the plan for unlimited is cheaper than what it is on your device.

Windows 7 with a tablet is a horrid experience. We had demo units in that were $3000 Motion Computing devices. Beautiful computers, horrible experience. Don't get me wrong; I quite like Windows 7. But as a tablet OS, it sucks as much as every previous desktop OS on a tablet.

It's also not designed to replace a laptop or desktop. The strongest I see it is for someone with a desktop who wants something portable for travel that can do web/docs/e-mail/media.

I get the email issue, but why can't you combine your apps? If you've got two separate App Store accounts, just authorize one computer for both accounts, download all of your apps and then sync it. All of your apps will show up.

That does have potential, but it's the settings/prefs for each App - do I always want to log out of her Facebook App? No. Would she? Definitely no. Same for Pandora, eBay, anything with unique user info.

Gets even more hectic if you were to have multiple kids using one iPad. They'd definitely need their own profiles.

Darn, looks like I'll have to wait for the next revision of the iPad before I shell out my cash. Was really looking forward to a decent device to keep me entertained while on the bus. But I just realized the lack of multi-tasking is a deal breaker for me.

I'll wait for a model where I can listen to music and surf the web at the same time. Or perhaps say... download a movie while I'm typing an email.

I have an iPhone and I'm sure you can listen/control your music while using other apps. And can't the iTunes store can download in the background while using other apps? Not sure if Safari continues to load a page while you do something else though.

I guess with OS X we're all just used to apps being open all the time.

What a bunch of moronic cry babies!!! WTF were you thinking a portable computer was going to do???????????????????? It's a computer!! It does what computers do. Good lord I seriously can't believe the stupid responses to this device.

AMEN, I am impressed, It'll do what my touch, i-phone does, but MUCH lighter than my BMB, and with my arithritis, that's a good thing;)

How do you print if your printer is non-wifi?

Aargh, one of my chief complaints about the iPhone. I shouldn't have to have a WiFi printer, nor an Airport Express in order to print from my iPod Touch, and I assume that this will be the same for the iPad. If I'm on a WiFi network, it should be able to see other computers and their attached peripherals.

16 Gb storage for 500$?

Are they kidding?

How can you release a computer device with so little storage space at such a price?

No way.

Let's see what their first makeover is.

At 128Gb things start to get interesting.

My wife and I each have our laptops and iPhones. The phones are for calls, instant communication (email) and quick-checks of the web. But it is not good for browsing. The laptops are for doing serious work; when in the office hooked up to a cinema display. But not good for talking on. Nor for browsing the web and watching movies. My macbook is great for browsing the web and watching movies. It has a 13" display, too. So the iPad hits that middle area for sitting down and browsing the web or watching videos without being tied to a TV.I don't have any problems sitting down, lying down, standing up, etc. while doing this with my macbook, and I'm not tied to a TV (And for that we have our :apple:TV) Also good for the work she does in the field, where she could use iWork instead of having to plug in her Air. Why would she have to plug in her air, doesn't it have a battery, too?

I'm not trying to criticize this thing (or you, this just happened to be the first page that came up in a search), but I am trying to justify getting one of these things for some reason other than the "wow" and "cool" factors.

It probably would be a little more convenient to browse the web, or do simple emails because it is lighter, but I really don't have a problem with doing that on my macbook. Plus the macbook can do a lot more.

I guess I just expected a little more from this (multitasking, camera for skype, GPS) and now find myself wondering when I would take this thing along with me on a trip, rather than my macbook. I already have an iPhone (much more portable) for the simple stuff on the go, so why take this?

The ebook idea seemed like a good idea (something Apple also made as a strong point), and it would be one less Kindle to pack for a trip. But after reading some posts, it seems like it may not be a good idea to read for a few hours on an LCD display...

I'm sure Apple will do ok (not great) with selling this device to the people who have to have everything, and maybe the 2nd gen will be better, but for now, I don't see how this thing is "magical" like Apple says it is...

Terrible resolution could sink this like Avatar sank Titanic!

Resolution is very poor given Steve said, "the year of HD is 2005!!!" Hey Steve, I went out and got a Sony FX when you said and this can't play my vids from way back when at 1080p!!

9.7 Kindle has 1200 x 824, iPad 1024 x 768!!

What were they thinking

Sorry Apple,

If you really wanted my money you should have revealed a 3G iPod touch with front and rear facing camera. Data only plan for $29 per month and you would have had a winner!

I would have bought two today but no WTF is this huge piece of crap!

Nail. On. Head.

Multi-tasking will come - it's inevitable. I'm sure Apple just want to do it in a way that it doesn't detract from the current simplicity and user experience. This is just the start - the o/s will evolve as the iphone has.

Oh Sweet Jesus. "Doesn't detract from the current simplicity and user experience"??? Does Apple think that its users are idiots? Here's a clue - multitasking is available on the iPhone via Backgrounder, and it doesn't take away from any "simplicity" or "user experience". It lets the user do whatever they want to do with the device they paid for. Stop making it seem like multitasking is some Herculean effort for Apple to undertake, and that it would ruin the computing experience. It sure as hell hasn't ruined anything in OS X, Windows, or a jailbroken iPhone OS.

With that said, this thing might be pretty sweet once the jailbreaking community gets around to this thing and gives it the functionality that the all-knowing Apple hasn't deemed us worthy to receive yet.

i followed the engaget updates, but I really WANT to like this thing, could someone help me, who sees the light in this device explain to me how this could help me in my everyday school life..because thats the convenince i need. Today is the first day i brought my Late 2009 macbook pro 15 inch to school and, it was HEAVYYY, i would not like to carry this thing around all the time.

I had a look over that page, and it's exactly the point: the idea is a very nice one, but it's not "KISS-compliant". Also, the software is ********. Lagging, many artifacts, and and interface which, although I'm getting used to many things quite easy, still does not let me focus on what I want to do.

The lack of multi-tasking does not bother me, either. I've got Push for Y!M and Mail, I can listen to music while doing anything else, and I access Tweetie when I don't have anything better to do and I want to see what things have jsut been released. I'm not trying to convience anyone, it's just that I can think of A LOT of uses for this one, and I see people talking about something they haven't seen just yet, discussing matters they might not use so often...

You can't work with it, and you can't carry it around easily.

What the heck is it good for?

When iPad goes OS X, OK, but this toy? No, thanks.

I would like a 3G iPod Touch with camera as well, and use the same data plan as the iPad (the one with $15 for 250MB/month). I guess I'll just keep waiting.

Gets even more hectic if you were to have multiple kids using one iPad. They'd definitely need their own profiles.

The dream and ultimate goal of the "Personal Computer Revolution" was that everyone could have their own single, personal computer of their own. Nobody is concerned about profile sharing/flipping on iPod Shuffles. Everyone just gets one of their own.

iPad isn't there yet as far as price accessibility goes, but that is the end goal. For families that can afford $499/child it would work now. If three device generations down the road that gets to $399 would cover even more. At $299 even more. at $199 even more. [ 3-4 years from now Apple could sell the current bottom end iPad at those lower two prices relatively easily if keep the hardware the same and/or shrink (for no performance gain) a few components. ]

Remember the iPod progressed the same way. Not so affordable by the masses intially to now ...... close to disposable in price.

I don't get it.
The screen is removable from the Lenovo Ideapad U1. The screen itself has a battery, ARM based processor, and runs a multitouch Linux. It also synchs content from the notebook/keyboard dock.

Plug it back in and you get an Intel Core 2 ULV computer running Windows 7.

It's a prototype.

This really s*cks, why should I buy this iPaddle if I already have an iPhone... I would pay an extra $499 for those extra few features. Most of the features are the same as on iPhone.

- If I want to use my favorite mindmap software, I would have to develop an App for that (or the Developer)
- If I want to use the touch feature to draw something with my favorite design software... I have to wait until there is an App for that.
- If I want to write, edit or otherwise use Microsoft office documents... I need a fre*kin App for that
- If I want to browse my files, I can only use Safari if my system permits it
- If I want to use my CRM application (Daylite), I can only use the simplified iPhone App version
- If I want to use multiple applications at a time... I go back to my heavy Macbook again.

The hardware is very good looking, unfortunately the platform is again closed... I wish I could use my own applications I use on my regular OSX platform. Then this would be the ultimate tablet and I might even buy more then one iPad.
