It's sad when people talk about buying a product they've never seen. That's when expectations suddenly rise disproportionately and people are saddened when Apple doesn't release what they expected.
/QUOTE]

Agreed. And it's equally sad when people condemn a product they've never seen, based on what they assume it will or won't do. Let's face it: this is a rumor of a product that probably will be released in some form, but we have little idea of what its capabilities are going to be. It might contain capabilities that will blow people away on day one, or it might be next year's sexy, cool tech product with limited practicality that will evolve into something awesome a few generations down the line but will sell well enough early on to justify its existence.

I found the iPhone to be only moderately interesting upon its release, but once apps became available and the price dropped, it became a must-have product for me. Similarly, other people have theorized that the MacBook Air is the model of portability into which all Mac laptops will eventually evolve. I can imagine all kinds of possibilities for a tablet several years down the line, as processors that fit in one become more powerful and less power-hungry, battery technology improves, and high-capacity SSDs drop in price. For instance, imagine a tablet that you could dock into an iMac-like shell with full-size monitor and keyboard, and that's powerful enough for what most people do.

Apple has a remarkably good track record with new products. While the tablet probably won't be for everyone (what product is?), I highly doubt that it will be a piece of crap that flops. Does anyone remember the thread here from when the iPod was announced, and so many people claimed that nobody was going to pay that much money for an MP3 player? Look how that turned out, and how the iPod has evolved over the years. I remember that the Mac Mini was trashed as being overpriced and under-featured, but it found its market, and I even bought two for my family to replace their aging PCs, where we had monitors and keyboards and not enough money for iMacs.

Anyway, I'm excited to see what the tablet will do, but I usually wait until at least the second generation of a new product before I buy it.

I'll pass. I'll just pay the extra $200 for a Macbook. Is there MUCH difference between the Macbook (white) and the Macbook Pro? I'm referring to the 13 inch ones.

Yes. The aluminum 13" is noticeably lighter, more solid, thinner, and feels better in your hands. And the lighted keyboard is really nice. And the battery lasts a lot longer. Whether it's worth $200 more depends on how important $200 is to you, but if you can swing it, get the macbook pro.

This new ipad tablet: when I travel, I'm carrying pdf versions of big documents, plus reports that I've written. I only make small edits in the reports while I'm traveling. I think the ipad would be very nice indeed.

If you have a family, this is the perfect companion for the kitchen/den desk. Everyone can quickly check their email, check weather, check movie times, do some quick web browsing, look at the stock market, read news, the list goes on and on (anything there's an app for). All without having to sit in the back room in front of the desktop or without having to wait to boot up a laptop.

I could actually see having one on the countertop by the backdoor and one on my nightstand in the bedroom (maybe bathroom counter). The kids won't be getting their own. I hope there's a cool dock to go with it to keep it charged in.

If you're like me and own the only iPhone in the house, you know how annoying it is that everyone is constantly grabbing your phone to "check something real quick." I've considered getting an iPod touch, but wanted a bigger screen...now it's here!

For me, this would never leave the house (except for the kids to watch movies on a flight), my iPhone is for when I'm on the go.

I'm glad Jobs has the foresight to see how useful this could be. If there's a way to illustrate (as in, with an accurate stylus, not with your big gobby finger) with this, either standalone or with a plug-in digitizer option, I'll buy thirty. One for every employee we have currently using a ridiculously overkill $2500 Wacom Cintiq.

For those of you who still can't figure it out, take a look around you. Everything that you see, was designed and drawn by somebody. ...most likely on a PC. This could at least be a considerable step in the right direction. The ability to draw and design and organize ones thoughts on the go in a minimalist light, sleek package? Oh hell yes.

yep, that'll be the thing I need. That is what finally gets me over in to buying this. I smiled when all the techheads flashed to the store for an overpriced iPod touch, didn't need one myself. Good for my stocks though. I actually laughed with the iPhone hype. All those "gottahavits" did a tremendous good job for my stock. But it was a useless product except for the value of just owning one because it's cool. I don't want one even if it was on a free giveaway. To big for a phone, to lazy for real computing work. Other then just showing off, it has no function.

But this...

Drawing conceptual art would be a premium for apple. If you could use it as a real drawing tablet that would be the thing.
But if you could use it as a iPod AND a drawing tablet AND a video player AND a gaming device AND a reader AND could hook it up with a blue tooth keyboard AND have a mobile Logic studio basics on it (with all the connectivity off course) ... that thing would go right in my backpack and I'll be going everywhere to work. This could liberate a whole bunch of people from their desk ... IF it was fast enough. I guess it will be the same slow speeds as the iHipwhatever. That would be a killer for the tablet. That ... and the price off course.

My guess is that it would be another missed opportunity and that you need 7 upgrades for it to be useable. People will buy it though, because it has that apple on it.

good for my stocks.

lol, I just love how all these "artist renditions" end at pasting a random screenshot on an iPod Touch and stretching it to cover up the button. Oh sigh, "artists" these days

Parallel processing. . .

one thing I haven't really heard discussed is parallel processing as a way to deal with low processing power of such a device. Why not allow for a dock of some type that might give the machine some extra speed and storage when plugged in .

The keyboard and/or stand could give it some extra power that is available when you are at home, in the office, or really sitting down and working. Power you might not need when you are on the bus, metro, giving a presentation. I think a device like this should have a keyboard available, but there are a lot of times where you won't need one.

depending on the price point I think this type of device will be able to fill in for people who have a desktop or large portable machine but want something for when they are on the go. something useful to control presentations, let you read a book or magazine, and watch a movie.

thinking about it, perhaps magazines or TV should be the ones who subsidize the device. You get the device for $X + a 2 year digital magazine subscription.

As to games, not everyone will need to be full touchscreen, some will work that way for when you are at a desk, but virtual thumb controls on either side of the screen would probably work well for a lot things.

OMG!
I need to tell you this...

if Apple make this tablet, I will post a picture of me here smashing my netbook with a hammer. That's a promise.

:confused::confused:

Battery life, processor power? These things ever come into mind?

Don't forget that it's only a 10" screen. That's not very big for drawing; I don't think it's meant for that purpose.

What's the killer app on this thing?
Maybe it'll get very hot so you can use it to cook a grilled cheese sandwich while studying the recipe on the screen at the same time. Maybe it'll have suction cups on the back so you can stick it to a wall and have an instant mini-TV or digital picture frame. Maybe it'll be really really durable and you can put it on the floor and play Dance Dance Revolution.

I won’t believe it until I actually hold one.
If it is real and I have to sign a monthly contract to own one I won’t be buying it.

Tablet = Bad

Screen will not stand up like a clam shell design

You will be forced to lay it flat on your lap, palm, or table

Typing on a virtual keyboard will suck

iPhone is too small for web and you can't type on it

MBP = Too big and heavy

10" Apple Air = Sweet Spot

Yup this will be EPIC FAIL :(

Not x86, so it won't run Snow Leopard, and too big for iPhone OS. It sounds too weird for me.

I'll repeat what our fellow forum user said: What's the killer app?

Ok, this is what I think: I don't want a bigger version of the iPod Touch with 3G. I want a tablet running Mac OS X with handwriting recognition and optional 3G.

That is what would make me buy it. (I don't need the 3G network coverage because I have a perfectly good wifi network at home and the service is overpriced.)

Ive got an iPhone and ive got a Macbook, this is way to big to get out and use casually and in a situation that I could get it out and use it why wouldn’t I just use my Macbook?

Ill wait an see what its got to offer, might make a good ebook reader

It needs to have innovative input.

Handwriting recognition, virtual keyboard, and most importantly some sort of breakthrough in speech to text. That would increase the functionality enough to broaden it's appeal significantly.

...and it makes it's own gravy!

Seriously, one market would be to sell one to every person over 40 who owns an iPod Touch or iPhone..... iPod Touch/iPhone screens are pretty tiny to old eyes for longer periods. I would welcome that. So would my eyes.

Since this will not be a pocket device, I can see some really nifty cases to protect/dress up the unit. Tooled leather flip case? Lacquered hardwood enclosure with a stand integrated into the back?

This would be ideal for hauling around documents for business folks, assuming it is mostly used for display, as opposed to heavy duty editing. If in need of edit...bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo.

Maybe it could be synced to a regular mac, like an apple tv, so that TV/Movies can be automatically switched in/out of the device. Maybe it would be able to stream like an appleTV.
