If this will run iPhone OS (or something like that) and not full Snow Leopard = FAIL!

If it will run full Snow Leopard = Could be interesting. (And of course it just gotta have built in 3G).

Not having 3G opens it up for the general consumer markets of Computing.

Wifi [802.11n] built-in is far more important. This will guarantee it isn't locked in to any Telco, but actually is used as a tablet PC.

I am so tired of waiting for this tablet lol. Please just make the time go by fast.

I think Woz and their MacBook Tablet mods are going to have a tough time next year!

Also, I wonder how Apple will handle the update to iPhone OS for the tablet. Probably a point release that adds support for larger res etc. But how will they approach the problem of devs and apps supporting the new res etc. without blowing the secret? Any ideas people?

This is all based on the assumption that the tablet will run iPhone OS which I guarantee it will! :)

I think we might finally see iWork and iLife mobile when this comes out! :D

And when has Apple cared for "general consumer markets"? Without built in 3G it will be a fail.

Oh and it should be aluminum design, that thing needs to be robust! Plastic = yuck!!!

Don't forget that it's only a 10" screen. That's not very big for drawing; I don't think it's meant for that purpose.

Have you seen a graphic tablet ever in your life?
If not look them up, their neat and pretty small.
;)
My friend draws alot on that and it no bigger than a standard mouse pad.

All I'm wondering is if its going to Verizon or ATT. My contracts up with Alltel in October and I was going to jump on the iphone bandwagon but if this thing ends up with Verizon and its pretty awesome then Ill get with big red...maybe.

Picture Is Not Accurate

This was ignored over at AppleInsider but the artist look is here say and meant to not be taken literally.

The aspect ratio is wrong, the edge width before you touch screen will be different allowing people to grip the device, etc.

Correct. Drawing pads are small, with the exception of the 11' x 17' option.

This should not be targeted for the Telcos.

No way in he'll would I want x86 in such a device. To many compromises to allow that to happen. Most likely this thing will run a iPhone derived OS. That would be acceptable if it allowed for multi tasking user apps.

Note I said derived, that doesn't mean it would have the current iPhone IS limitations.

Dave
What compromises would x86 make?

...

I bet it will be expensive though.

Well, you do get what you pay for.

Netbook: cheap. You get: junk.

Apple tablet: arm + leg. You get: a product that redefines the market.

The point: every one still has a choice to make.

Every one knows that the Apple product will redefine this market, and every company (think Dell, IBM, etc) will say "...I should have done this...". But they didn't, and here comes Apple to show them how it is done... :)

Friendly reminder: The iPhone was introduced at $600. For those who don't wish to suffer from purchasing the initial offering, watching as the price dramatically decreases, the wait will be long and salivatory. I advise thee to prepare thy gums for the flow of lusty juices.

hahah! Loved this post! /salute :D

What is it for?

iPhone/iPod Touch = Small
MB/MBP = Good size

Who wants something too big for a pocket? If you are going to carry a bag, use your MB/MBP.

Can someone explain how it fits in and who the target market is?

Target market = Apple fanboys. [They'd buy Steve Jobs' old socks if given the opportunity.]

ARM processor! Looks like I'll be passing on this one. I wanted a reasonable speced tablet, not a large ipod touch.....

:(

The lighter, the better. 300 g or less would be great.
The smaller, the better. Pocketable would be great.
Firewire for repairs via Target Disk Mode.
At least two USB 2 ports for wireless remote control and pendrive.
Ethernet port.
Wifi.
Bluetooth.
Touch screen.
Full and true GPS (TomTom compatible).

Full Mac OS X for full blown presentations from NATIVE Apple Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint via video-out port to videoprojectors (with VGA adapter cable).

Here it is:

We need thousands for our University.

Now that is exactly what I want...... I just don't think were going to get it...

I second this actual professional tablet/conference/diagnostic tool and so much more that is NOT A PHONE.

However, the 10" diagonal [as it should be] means it's not designed [nor should it ever be] to fit in one's pocket, but someone's 9" x 6.5" Day Planner.

While I am bummed that this is (supposedly) a Q1-2010 release versus a Q4-2009 release, this is good news, and as I have stated it's a real complex undertaking, as this is no mere iPod with a bigger screen.

Most fundamentally, it forces the company to define its "matrix" thinking between hardware form factors and software forking decisions (e.g., iPhone OS, Mac OS, hybrid OS, download anything anywhere, exclusively limit to App Store), not to mention the service layer and developer tool interconects between same, a topic that I blogged about in:

Apple, the ‘Boomer’ Tablet and the Matrix

MacTablet (or whatever)

Someone asked how you would use a 10" tablet when a notebook can do the same thing. Well, the notebook can't. Can you hold a notebook in one arm and coherently use the keyboard, mouse, etc. with your free hand? Not really. You're stuck with putting the unwieldy thing down on some surface and try to type on it, hoping it doesn't slip off your hand, bench, table, lap or wherever you've put it. This is the greatest advantage for a tablet-type device.

However, while the iPhone OS is pretty and convenient for some things, a device the size of the proposed tablet would be be better off with a more robust OS with broader capabilities--much better if it could run the same applications you run at home.

Now, there is some possibility that Apple will include a 'Lite' version of some of its apps, such as iMovie Lite, iPhoto Lite, iWork Lite, etc... Add to this the capability to run all the current iPhone/iPT apps, especially ebook readers like Stanza, and suddenly you have a device that functionally replaces the Kindle, the compact notebooks currently known as 'netbooks' and even most of the lower-end notebook computers in the sub-$1000 range. If they also price this in the $800 price range, Apple will have a way to take a huge bite out of that currently bottom-heavy market.

On January 24th,

Apple will introduce

iTablet.

And you'll see why 2010

won't be like "2010"

I'd buy it simply because I'm expecting it to basically be a giant iPod Touch. Translation? A worthwhile, though short on battery life, e-reader that would support ebooks from all the largest stores. Plus it would have the benefit of being a multitouch web browser.

I loved my iPod Touch but it was simply too small for me. I love the idea of a multitouch device, especially one I can feel comfortable holding in my ridiculously large meat hooks.

Granted, if it turns out to not support App Store apps it loses its appeal to me but so it goes.

Thanks for that reply .... find it hard to think it can shift in sufficient quantity to make it worthwhile. Too large to be put in a pocket ... might as well carry a lappy as have a mid size tablet. I'm probably missing something. Intrigued to see how it carves a space for itself in the market.

It's perfect for the medical field. My Doctors (I'm an IT manager for a very large medical group) currently use Motion Computing LE1700 tablets. They are the same basic form factor, except they are heavy, they run windows and suck power like it's going out of style. Oh and they need a pen.

THANKS!
