Told ya! The killer app for this thing is going to be Apple Remote Desktop! Imagine a portable second screen for your main Mac that you can bring to the patio and touch control Front Row with. Or at the office bring your second screen to the big meeting.

So now it's a glorified track-pad/keyboard/Mac Accessory??

It better be running OS X, if it's some modified form of the iPhone OS, DO NOT WANT.

Anyone care to venture a guess about what this thing, which I hope actually exists, will be named?

Perhaps xTouch?

As long as it's less than $700 and is more than a glorified iPhone OS tablet that I can use as a Wacom alternative - I'm sold. A great price point for me would be about $600.

so how does the Diner fit in with this?

Actually, very well. As a Point of Sale device, the order can be tagged directly into the tablet, rather than the wait person having to go to a computer, then get your drinks/appetiser/whatever. It saves time, which improves efficiency, which reduces cost.

This tablet will make an awesome large remote for Plex...I can imagine the possibilities...and not just controlling the volume.

Let's say you are in the home theater watching a movie, and nature calls. Imagine being able to transfer the Plex video feed from your TV to the tablet so you can continue watching your movie while sitting on the throne...

Seriously, people would pay $799 - 999 for a glorified monitor/remote? Apple better pull out some better selling points than that, because I feel these should just be considered minor features.

As described this doesn't sound compelling at all. Limited functionality at a high price.

I agree. Without OS X SL it is egregiously overpriced and with the 'new' features and 'uses' at that price - puts a lot of potential buyer out of the market, myself included.

I hope it has much more to offer other than a huge, overpriced iPhone!

D

Still seems like a concept in desperate need of proper functionality to me.

Touchscreen control for my Mac? Got my keyboard, thanks.

Remote control for my TV/music? Got one of those already too which works just fine.

Others' mileage may vary of course - largely saying, as it stands, I can't see it being for me.

But still hopeful that the oft-pronounced 'we won't enter the space unless we've got something worthwhile' from Apple management means that there's more to it than this. Lots more.

It would be pretty funny if they don't make something like this.

Cuz this hype is OUT of ContOL

@#*&$*#&*#&$ :D:):eek::rolleyes: :D

Just wish they'd hurry up and put an lcd in where the trackpad is on the current lappies ... built-in multi-touch input control surface. Still I guess an external one provides a better revenue stream and can be used with any Mac, not just a laptop.

I think it's neat that we can put quotes around some words and get paid for it. Must've been close to deadline for Mr Lam to turn in a story. Now, if Kevin Rose posted this, then we can believe the "call from out of the blue" line.

If "deep throat" was actually fondling the device, he should be able to tell what OS it's running. Or maybe not.

Frakkin' bloggers and their verified, unverified, maybe, maybe not, real sources. Yea, that's you Brian.

I have to echo those that have no interest in the device if the OS is based on iPhone, not OSX. I also don't see the big deal of it having a webcam. Nor that it is a touch interface for your Mac/Front Row. I have Snatch Test (free) and Air Mouse Pro ($2.99) on my iPhone and they both do that. There must be some killer app or other reasons to spend $900 on it. Though, like I said, if it has almost all the functionality of OSX (obviously no DVD/optical drive) and some innovative surprises, I'm in!

I'm for a tablet, but I'm compelled to wonder if this has just turned into a vicious circle of people thinking that other people's rumors may have some truth, in turn making their own rumors, and then more people seeing that and doing it themselves...

I mean, I don't think I've actually seen a single shred of real evidence besides reputable claims. Really can't build expectations on that. =/

Even so, webcam connectivity would be neat. Video chat on the go, anyone?

it sounds like i won't be able to use it as a restaurant pos...but we'll wait and see.;)

Why do you say that? You can use the iPhone/iPod Touch as a restaurant pos.

You could even tether iPhones to your tables, display the menu and let the customers fill out their own orders.
