Three ways of looking at the Apple Tablet:

1) Recession + Overpriced Tablet = FAIL

2) Americans - Keyboard = YO YO YO I CAN TOUCH MY PORN

3) Huge CBR collection / 10" touchscreen = GEEK VIAGRA

I can name one thing a tablet can do that a conventional notebook can't.

Hold it stably in one hand while using it with the other.

Bingo.

Many people will pay for portability. (That's one reason some people will buy a MacBook instead of a heavier cheaper Dell with the same CPU specs.)

An iPhone is a one-hand or two-hand, no desk needed, device. One is tempted to use one for email while driving, even if not legal nor safe.

Both a netbook and a MacBook are desk (or at least a lap) needed devices. Almost no one actually uses a MacBook while driving these days.

Another successful device class might be a larger, more readable, two-hand usable, no desk or lap needed device. It would have to be very light, and thus thin. ARM CPU and multi-touch UI. There will be lots of legal disclaimers to unsuccessfully prevent people from using this hypothetical device for web browsing while driving.

OK, these last minute, left-field iTablet rumors are getting a little ridiculous. Hey, I heard the new iTablet being released next week makes coffee too!

3) Huge CBR collection / 10" touchscreen = GEEK VIAGRA
Comparably sized 10" touchscreens have been about 8.25" x 6.25" or so, so comics (which are 6.625x10.25”) wouldn't look that good on it unless maybe if it's higher than the iPhone/iPod Touch's 160/163ppi.

It's about the size of a mini-comic or digest comic, though, so I could see a market developing for those dimensions.

And it's the perfect size for mass-market paperbacks (and movies and TV), of course.

If it doesn't have an x86 CPU, none of your OSX software will run.

You'll have to buy new copies that have been compiled for ARM.

Why? ROSETTA ran PPC code on X86 and why not offer a compiler for a special ARM version of OS X?

Why does that not make any sense? It makes sense to me, albeit a little constrained and awkward.

Little details..

I find the beauty of Apple products can be found in the little details; a few of which I hope to see in this rumored tablet:

- the textured glass as a surface, similar to that from the new macbooks. I'm not sure if this is possible on a screen, but i LOVE the feeling of them.

- minimalist design; as few buttons as possible. However, i do hope they throw in a d-pad and a couple buttons on each side to facilitate gaming (as well as other applications).. if they added gaming buttons to this, i think it would destroy the portable gaming competition (for casual games, anyway... i hate using the touch screen on my iphone for a d-pad and button sub);we have already seen that apple is very interested in the iphone as a gaming device... maybe this is an extension...

- pretty... they're always so damn pretty...

just a few thoughts.

This is getting very interesting! Hopefully we'll see this sooner rather than later - I think the suspense is torturing us!

iMac touch

#1. The picture doesn't have to be that big.
#2. The product mock-up described in the picture will NEVER happen. It's too heavy to hold for long periods and too warm to sit on your lap over time. No doubt, someone else could offer mod versions of this. But, few would buy them.
#3. You posted this in another thread, without comment. Soon it just becomes spam.

Hmm, that's the idea I've been tossing around for years

there was talk of making the device act as a secondary screen/touchpad for iMacs and MacBooks

Hmm, I mentioned this in the "killer feature of the apple tablet" thread. I know it's got to be baloney if someone's posting my ideas as fact. I'm always way off base.

But then again, I suspect this device will contain a firewire audio interface and is codenamed something like Meteorite. ;-)

Apple is turning into GM. Stop talking and just release the darn thing into the stores already!
The one exception Apple's ever made about pre-announcing a product multiple months before launch, was the Apple TV (Woz was surprised they did so). All the other chatter has been speculation by others. They really can't help that.

How many cameras is my question.
Only one. An iSight in the front. But, it will likely have a built-in SD card reader for reading cards from digital cameras, or at the very least, the ability to connect to an digital camera through an adapter.

Wow, anal much?
haha, seriously... geez!
Silly me, I was under the impression that simply expressing an opinion about someone's post is useful... unless its just a couple of throw-away comments that add nothing to the discussion. Personally, I'd just as soon not have folks posting the same over-sized image in every thread. Good news? That's the 2nd and last comment you'll have to read from me about it. Bad news? We'll probably see mk455 post that image a few more times before the product is released. :p :D

Slap in an an infrared emitter and that would also turn it into the ultimate universal remote control (with a proper app).

For rarely used operations, such as switching between video sources, or drawing back home theatre curtains, perhaps.

But for the most common scenarios, like changing channels or volume? No. There's a reason why touchscreen controllers are actually the least popular type of remote.

Most users much prefer doing primary functions via physical pushbuttons whose position and shape they've memorized, so no looking is ever necessary.
