I like what Apple are doing with their green initiatives - but the advert is preachy and sanctimonious.

If you're trying to be a good person, you don't go around shouting how good you are. Other people must be the judge of that. Your own opinion is immaterial. Bellowing it loudly only alienates the people you want to attract.

Steve understood all that.

Wow, Apple now became a more classy company to me. They spent tons of money for going green and they took a Jab at Samsung in a classy way. Not like ''Samsung users are idiots, our products are better!!!!!!!!'' like Samsung did. :apple:

There's nothing classy about acting like they're the only company taking green measures.

"Classy" would be Apple doing charity work like taking solar powered computer classrooms to poor locations around the world, as Samsung does... without tooting their own horn in full page ads.

Yes. Apparently it's classy when it's a possibility that Jobs gave anonymously to charity and didn't toot his own horn. But when Samsung does it it's ignored. Because you know - Samsung is evil...

While no company names were mentioned in the advertisement, given the legal battle between Samsung and Apple, I would assume that most readers of the newspaper would associate Samsung with it.

Samsung is given way too much publicity. If one technical novice person would have too choose between an iPhone or its iOS ecosystem and Android, one would almost immediately think of Samsung as the main alternative.

What a shame. Samsung mobile products are cheaply made, bloated with useless software, TouchWiz nullifies improvements in the CPU segments and on top if all, for what they are, way too expensive.

There are better alternatives in Android. Sadly some companies don't have the deep pocket for more aggressive marketing campaigns like this Korean conglomerate.

Happy Earth Day. Id like you to see pictures of what the air quality is like where all your electronics are made.

Apple takes a jab at itself, inadvertently

After copying stuff from Windows Phone and Android, blatantly and shamelessly, today Apple, on the green earth day, inadvertently takes a jab at itself..

Umm... Sorry? Android stole whole iOS UI and then iOS Jailbreak tweaks. Only thing Apple done with iOS 7 was copying jailbreak tweaks and put a flat design on it. But oh... Sorry, I forgot Google found that ideas by themselves and flat design is invented by Microsoft

such different approach you have there towards these three companies

Apple is known for their innovation, and for suing other companies that copy (or as they put it, "steal") ideas from them. So we were curious to see how iOS5's features stacked up in the originality department. In particular, we looked at the 10 main user features highlighted during the keynote today and compared them to features in iOS's main competition, Android.

1. Notifications.
In iOS5 notifications will appear at the top of your screen and you can drag the bar down to see all the notifications in one place.

Original? Definitely not. Android has had that since version 1.0. Recently they improved it in Android 3 so developers can make rich notifications that are more than just text and an image. So iOS5 notifications have caught up to Android 1.0 notifications. The only original part is integration of notifications into the lock screen. Some 3rd party apps provide that for Android but it's not built-in.

2. Newsstand.
Now you can subscribe to magazines and newspapers and have updates downloaded in the background.

Original? So-so. Android relies on programs that are not part of the core operating system to view content, in order to allow 3rd parties to compete against each other. Android apps, including the Market, are still catching up on subscription and in-app purchases. But the OS has had background updates and sync for quite some time. The nice thing about the Android story is that the APIs for this are public.

3. Twitter.
Apple has integrated Twitter into the operating system and its major applications. Whether you like it or not.

Original? Absolutely. Nobody else is stupid enough to do this.

Seriously, Android has these standard messages called "Intents" so that if your app wants to have a Share button it sends out an Intent indicating what it's trying to do. The OS will go out and find all the apps that can do Sharing and give the user a list of them to pick from. That can include Twitter, Facebook, SMS, GTalk, and whatever else you have installed. Even social media apps that weren't invented yet when the program was written can be supported.

iOS5 provides single sign-on for Twitter. Android does the same, but for any application. It lets the developer write an account manager for single sign-on for any service you can think of including Twitter, Google mail, Exchange, and more.

Continue reading: Browser tabs, wireless sync, and other "new" ideas >

4. Safari improvements. Safari now has browser tabs and a simplified reader view.

Original? Not really. Android 3's browser (as well as every desktop browser) has tabs already. Applications like Pulse, Instapaper, and Google Reader provide simplified readers.

5. Reminders.
Get a notification at a certain time or location. For example get a reminder when you leave the conference building.

Original? Somewhat. Reminders based on times are not original (see Alarms and Calendars in Android). Reminders based on location have been done before in third party apps for Android, but it hasn't been as well integrated and packaged as in iOS5.

6. Camera improvements.
There's a camera button on the lock screen, and you can use the volume up button to take a picture. iOS5 also adds easier contrast adjustments and simple edits.

Original? Yes and no. Some Android phones already have a dedicated shutter button so that's not new. But let's face it, the iPhone has a better camera app than base Android does. This change makes it even better. Second and third party camera apps fill the gap on Android to some extent but not completely.

7. Mail. Search mail, conversations, drag and drop addresses, indent, global dictionary, and rich text.

Original? Not where it counts. Google's GMail client on Android has had searching and conversations since the beginning. Other features like rich text are new to mobile in iOS5 but have long existed on desktops and web applications. The dictionary is something Android doesn't have (Kindle does) but I wonder how useful it will be.

8. PC Free. You no longer need a PC or Mac to set up or sync your iOS device.

Original? Hardly. You could do this with Android 3 years ago.

9. Game Center.
See scores of your friend's friends, purchase and download games from Game Center, play turn based games.

Original? No. Third parties like OpenFeint and Zynga have been doing this for quite some time (on Android and iOS).

10. iMessage.
Chat with your friends that have iOS5 without using your SMS minutes.

Original? Nope. Ever heard of Google Talk? AIM? And what's wrong with SMS anyway - it works on all phones (even dumb ones) not just iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Final thoughts After reading some of the comments in the talkback section (thanks!) I decided I needed to add a little context. In April, Apple sued Samsung, claiming its Android devices are copycats because they're rectangular and use icons. In October they sued Motorola claiming Motorola stole ideas such as multitouch. Last March they sued HTC for ideas like swipe-to-unlock. Steve Jobs wrote "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours".

As one commenter put it, "every new feature is just going to be copied, improved upon, refined, and reused". Everybody borrows from everybody else. That I don't object to. Standing on the shoulders of giants, and all that. The part I object to is to call it "stealing" when the copying is done in one direction but then say it's perfectly OK when done in the reverse direction.

Do you know differences between UI and Services? If iOS didn't released, Android would be a blackberry copy OS in a phone with keyboard. Google is a marketing and advertisement company, they used their knowledge in marketing to convince people into thinking Android is original. Also, Samsung is not really a corrupt company, Google is, who do you think said Samsung to copy and bash Apple?

Also here is ''original'' Android phone from 2006, Android before iPhone.

Same old discussion. Manufacturers were moving in exactly the same direction as the iphone. Just take the LG Prada as an example.

So what features of the Android OS copy the ios OS? Im presuming your going to use the same argument to agree that ios has copied from Android, such as the notification center etc.

We get it you are anti-Apple. You can't tell me that Apple did not pave the way for the modern-day smart phone especially when Samsung admits this. And whether not Samsung copied who really cares actually I'm kind of glad they did copy because I just keeps Apple on the toes. And to add to that it's probably the smartest move the company could ever do in that situation. Company A revolutionizes an industry company B copies it, bottom line competition is a good thing.

No - that's you're interpretation. Which isn't definitive, now is it?

Do you have a counter argument? Or do you really believe that Apple was granted a design patent for each of those features on their own? A flat front surface? Really?

I bet kdarling doesn't even believe what he posted. :) He was probably just being pedantic to confuse the posters who don't know what they are talking about.

My counter argument is that you are making your own interpretation. It doesn't matter what I believe any more than what you believe.

We get it you are anti-Apple. You can't tell me that Apple did not pave the way for the modern-day smart phone ...

I agree that Apple paved the way for the current smartphone industry. That's just a plain fact. But noting actual facts and history and reports and links and such and so forth isn't anit-Apple. It's just having perspective.

What most forget is that Apple isn't the progenitor of the technology that they smashed together to get the phone to be as awesome as it was on day one.

Apple's best claim to fame is the iOS operating system and the foundation for developing mobile apps.

Apple wasn't first with a mobile touch only GUI, or an app store, or downloading apps wirelessly, etc. etc. etc. They are however the first to actually take into consideration ALL of the things folks wanted to do on their devices.

Back in 1999, I know, ancient history for most on here, tech nerds like myself were getting fed up with all of the $750 mobile devices and $2000 laptop that we had to carry with us. We've been asking tech companies to give us what was essentially the iPhone since 2000.

It came, it was limited drastically, but at least we could build upon it.

Same old discussion. Manufacturers were moving in exactly the same direction as the iphone. Just take the LG Prada as an example.

Very true, and I never understand how even the most dull witted fanboi can't see that just about every enhancement since iOS 5 has been a total rip from Android and Palm's dead WebOS.

Android wasn't even designed to be on phone originally. It was made to compete with Windows Mobile which even at that time Apple used to do everything from inventory to mobile checkouts.

The rest of this is just weird.

This is hilarious. Anytime an android maker or windows takes a jab at apple it is considered tacky or childish. But when apple does it, it is cool and witty.lol

All of this "taking shots" at the competition is very middle school and getting old. Apple and Samsung both need to stop worrying about their rivals and focus on something new because their phones are getting a little stale.

If a electronic device gets do called "stale" your using it too too much in a non productive way. One must learn to balance life in general so things don't become "stale".

So wasting aluminium (it has to be re-smelted at a guess) by milling blocks is green? Wouldn't that take more energy to produce than casting individual pieces en masse? Are they building solar farms for the factories in China?

Or is this just for the media, to make Apple look good in the U.S press, and to gain pats on the back from Greenpeace. Sure seems like it..

But good on Apple for announcing their green intentions, I doubt for one second that it is self serving..... Guffaw...

Over all this makes very little difference, even if the case was cast into something close to the final shape it would still need to be machined to its final finish and its the extraction of aluminium from its ore that is the energy intensive bit, melting it back down to form new blocks to machine is pretty easy and fairly low energy. Using aluminium is the smart move as it is very easy to recycle.

A troll on here appears to be someone that posts logic and reason that isnt overly positive towards Apple.

Did you even look at that Samsung link?

Samsung are already green and have been for sometime.

Hmm. Now I'm almost convinced you are on Samsung's payroll.

Do you even own any :apple: products Sir?

Samsung makes an ad which shows Apple in a negative light - "That is so tacky etc etc"

Apple makes an ad which trys to show other companies in a negative light - "Well done Apple, brilliant ad"

I was originally commenting on you saying that Apple's new Environment Ad Campaign was not classy and was some sort of Attack Ad.

Maybe Samsung and Google were working on a glass slab smart phone before :apple: shipped theirs but I think it is more than proven that Samsung copied Apple's designs.

Apple is saying in their Environment Ad. We know we are a market leader that others copy from... so copy this!

Also Dave, my definition of a Troll is someone who wanders into a community of like minded people, Apple product fan's in this case, and starts disagreements with just about everything they say.

Why aren't you hanging out in an Android fan forum?

How much is Samsung paying you anyway?
Sound like a cool gig.

Oh really? Well do tell me what is the proper amount of use for an electronic device so it doesn't become stale.?Because obviously I am using my phone improperly.

Disgaree with Apple and your automatically on Samsungs payroll!

Im presuming you never looked at that link regarding Samsung being green. They have been green for a long time and offer lots of green initiatives. If you want to go along the copying route, One could easily say Apple have copied Samsung.

Also if Apple are such a leader, why has it taken them this long to go green?

Apple just didn't go Green last week! Do you own a Apple product?

You do realize apple didn't go "green" with these data centers?

http://voices.yahoo.com/steve-jobs-apple-inc-unveils-plans-go-green-327581.html

Now whether or not, they started at that very moment, is up for debate. But they have been talking about the green for quite some time. As I am sure, Samsung and other big name companies have been. We may not see it here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do talk about it.

http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/samsung-to-go

A quick google search and I found something about Samsung dating back to 2009. So yes they do to talk about it. I don't know if they took out a full add, but they do talk about!
