Wow, I've been an apple fanatic since 2001 and everything I own is Apple except my Blackberry b/c I refuse to get ATT service. I just saw this article and watched the video of the Blackberry 9700 Bold 2 (my phone) and was amazed how they showed the signal going from full bars to one bar. I did the EXACT same thing with my Blackberry 9700 with T-Mobile and didn't loose a single bar. Then I cupped it at the antenna with both hands and I lost only one bar.

Apple is severely exaggerating other people's signal drops and it really makes me mad they are lying and stooping down to that level.

I think i'm good with my blackberry now...no iPhone for me in the foreseeable future.

Absolutely true. I have all apple products except for iPhone because the company I work for gives us free blackberries. However hard I grip on my curve 8900, never a single bar dropped. It could, in some area where the signal is weak, perhaps drop one or two bars, but it should never be a real problem. This is so obviously a design issue simply because apple combined antenna and the external case into one entity! Come on, apple! Ok, it might not be so terrible in the sense that, with some caution, it's still phone that can work, I got that point already. But a fact is a fact, there is a very good reason why all other cell phone makers wrap their antennas inside plastic cases. Don't think engineers never thought about that!

This is actually getting humorous....

1. The grip/signal issue is not an iPhone 4 issue alone.

2. Buy the phone you like and be done with it.

I haven't seen this much fervor since Divx versus DVD and then Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD.

The people behind this anti Apple propaganda are android trolls/htc/motorola/blackberry/google apologists.

Nice to see their stupidity backfire.

Dude, you better wear some strong water wings, or you will drown in the sea of koolaid you are in. The 'people' behind this are typically owners who can see how the iphone 4 is a flawed device in this regard or how petty apple is being about this.

But the 'dropped call issue' is. I don't care if those holy bars are minus 10, as long as I can make a call. I'm glad my contract bars me from taking an iPhone 4 right now, have to wait 6 more months, all will be fine by then :D

Get over it Apple, the iPhone 4 is a great, but flawed product. To replicate dropped bars on most other phones requires quite a bit of effort. The problem is that Apple tested most of these phones with a plastic case for the purposes of secrecy, which masked this antenna issue from them, hence creating "antennagate". The solution would be to move the seam to the bottom of the phone in iPhone 5. That being said, I will continue buying iPhones in odd numbered iterations. I bought iPhone, iPhone3GS and will buy iPhone 5 :D

This is boring...

I'll tell you one phone that doesn't have this problem...

Palm Pre Plus

I can cover it with both hands and the bars stay the same. And the phone is a crap load cheaper than iPhone and Droid X.

Just tried the grip with 3 bars of 4G. Nothing. My friend did his iPhone 4 and it went dead. He then put is case on and his phone didn't drop bars.

So safe to say under the same conditions my EVO didn't drop. My 1G iPhone didn't have very good signal in the area around 2 bars.

OMG, I can't believe how crazy everyone has gotten with this issue...

No way I have been able to read all the posts, but here is a partial and brief summary of what I have read so far:

Folks citing examples or commentary that are irrelevant to antenna or reception issues - e.g., comments about android and its greatness or not.

Folks citing commentary about the iTunes ecosystem or the Nvidia GPU in MBP (irrelevant).

Folks making damning comments about products (Droid X or iPhone 4) with which they have limited experience.

Folks drawing conclusions based on extremely small sample size.

The vocal minority (who actually has an issue with the iPhone 4) who thinks that their experience is either unique to the iPhone 4 or who thinks that statistically represent the silent majority.

Folks who haven't taken the time to assess the relative impact of their cell service provider's quality into the matter.

Folks who comment on Jobs (negatively or positively).

Finally, I have way too many posts from folks who think their opinion matters on the manner in which Apple has responded to this matter, and who think Apple's YouTube videos have any bearing personal conduct.

We can't fix it so we'll attack our competitors.

Apple continues their pettiness--I think maybe it's time for Jobs to leave.

Apple is doing this because of the huge threat of Android.

Android is eating Apple's lunch in the smart phone market and soon the tablet market.

When you are scared and desperate you take desperate measures--just what this is.

Ha ha. The huge threat of Android. Have you seen the latest Droid X? It would be ridiculous to try to pull that out of your pocket and make a phone call. Looks like the size of a cell phone from the 80's. This is their only solution to maintain decent battery power, they have to make their phones huge. The earlier droids didn't really work. Now the current ones are loaded with bloatware and stupid skins. Android is competition, but only just barely. And really there is plenty of room for both of them to take out RIM and Nokia. Apple will keep its one phone strategy and make huge margins selling the phone cheaper.

This is very lame on Apples part. Yes they all have issues but who cares. We were not talking about them when we complained about the iPhone antenna issue. We were talking about Apple. So for Apple to drag these other companies into their issue just makes Apple look bad. They should have taken the higher ground that I would have expected a company like Apple to take and issue a fix despite the cost to keep consumers happy. Shame there is not another platform out like iTunes and a mobile phone to match by someone else. The path Apple has taken will have me considering a different phone next time... Assuming there is one that handles music and video as easily as the iPhone.

Agreed. While it may be true that every single phone on the planet has a signal attenuation problem, it makes not a bit of difference. The iPhone 4 is the phone that should show Apple's awesomeness, and I'm incredibly disappointed that they are mudslinging at this point. Pathetic. Truly.

What's with all this finger pointing, Apple? After all, from what I've seen you don't need to squeeze the hell out of the iPhone 4, you can drop a call with a single finger...

Move your finger or put a case on it when your inside your office!
When I’m inside my house I can stick my finger on the “sweet spot” to degrade signal but never drop a call or data. Just move your dam finger, if it zapped you would you keep touching it?

did you miss the point that he is not the one with the iphone4? he was just making a point, not complaining that his phoned loses the signal.

Too bad not many people are buying it. ;)

As I had mentioned in various of my early post! Apple didn't start the war, it is the media that started the war by over blowing the Antenna issue. Apple will eventual stop making its point that all phones behave this way. Secondly, which people continue to ignore, is that I think they are trying to battle against FCC. This battle will actually help out all other mobile manufacturers. There has been mentioned about this in various forums but I will repeat here. Why do you think the antenna are placed where they are, externally or concealed? It is FCC requirement that the antenna will be placed as far away from your noodles (i.e. brain) and furthest away from your body due to the microwaves could be damaging your brain cells or something like that. There has been no proven evidence of this and FCC is enforcing this requirement on mobile phone manufacturers.

Secondly, maybe it's time for Bluetooth to takeoff and companies should start providing bluetooth headset by default. This will also fix the whole hands-free mobile operation that is being enforced my law in many status and countries. If this was done we wouldn't have the whole Antennagate issues.

I agree I have all mac products but have verizon because of the reliability. I never had a problem with any of my Blackberry's including the Storm, now I DO NOT have the antennae issue with my droid x. I don't know why Apple is stooping so low!?

They are stooping so low because their arrogance has erupted out of control over the past few years. This is not to say that they have not earned the right to be arrogant, they make some great products that have had a profound and positive impact all over the world. But companies and people who are truly successful continue to persevere and remain a bit humble.

It takes a strong person/company to simply admit their mistake, apologize, fix it, learn from it, and move on. Instead, Apple has set themselves up as the “antenna monitor police” casting aspersions at their competitors. So what if their competitors have similar issues. Develop a product that does not have the same problems and move on, but in Apple’s case, they tear down others so they can pull themselves up. It’s pathetic!

IPhone 4 is awesome

The discussion has gotten out of hand. Motorola was one of he first companies to jump all over Apple and antennas. Now that the Droid X exhibits same behavior Apple has the right to show the issue can be replicated. It's business.

My sense on this is that if any of these phones are on 1900 MHz they exhibit this behavior more readily hhan when they are on 850 MHz.

Finally, i have been sporting my new iPhone 4 for nearly a month. I have yet to drop a call. I have traveled by car from San Francisco to Seattle, Portland and Vancouver. I have been in New York and Hawaii. The iPhone 4 has the best reception of any of my iPhones. I have owned 4. And my upload and download seeds are far superior to any Android or Blackberry device on hoer networks. I also use simultaneous voice and data on 3G on AT&T. Show me any Verizon or Sprint phone that can accomplish this without resorting to wifi except for the EVO which does not work in Europe. Another location I travel to twice a year.

Good for Apple. They're only playing fair. There's nothing wrong with showing the facts in a completely unbiased manner. I completely agree with this move.

I would be curious how many of those 3 million were first time customers or those upgrading. My guess would be around 2,998,543. Second apple could sell 3 million turds with the letter I infront of it in 30 days.

Please. These is one of the weakest arguments out there. If this were true, people would return them. People here have been BEGGING AND PLEADING with people who would not stop complaining about their alleged iPhone 4's to work and they refused.

Umm, yes they did. They recommended many other phones. Of AT&T phones, they recommended the 3GS, for one, along with the Palm Pre. For other carriers, they recommended a couple of Android and Blackberry products. Interestingly, the highest rated non-Apple phone was the HTC Evo 4G (recommended), with a rating of 74...the same as the 3GS.

Yeah most all of which have been shown to have similar problems when interfered with by a person. Unfortunately Consumer Reports did not test all the phones like they did the iPhone 4, so their report is seriously flawed.

If you hold an iPhone 4 in the way that causes a Droid X to lose signal, an iPhone 4 does not lose signal in the same way. It is stupid to design a test to get a result on a single phone and then say you can't recommend it, without identifying the same possible issues on other phones.

Of course if you got a picture and background on CR's research lab for cell phones, it looks like a little kid's playroom, so their inadequate testing is not really a surprise.

Not to mention I don't think much if any of their testing involved actual phone calls... which is weird.

Maybe no evidence that I know of but common sense says having things like this against your head hours a day probably isn't the best idea. Also Apple didn't start the war but they definitely did not rise above it. Will be happy when they quit focusing on other people issues and solve their own.
